History of 3D Animation Brief Explanation

3D animation uses computer graphics to depict objects moving in 3D space, unlike 2D images. Artists can rotate and move 3D figures like real objects using 3D modeling software. There are three main types of 3D animation: 3D video/film which uses motion graphics in a 3D environment; interactive 3D which allows user interaction in a virtual 3D world; and virtual reality 3D which provides an immersive experience using devices like VR headsets. Influential early 3D animated films include Snow White (1937) and Akira (1988), while Philippines films include RPG Metanoia (2010) and Urduja (2008).

HISTORY OF 3D ANIMATION

BRIEF EXPLANATION:
3D animation uses computer graphics to make objects look like they’re moving in 3-dimensional
space. Unlike 2D images, artists can move and rotate 3D figures like real objects. Artists use 3D
modeling software to build the objects. Newer methods of animation involve motion capture,
which records an actor’s live movements for digital animation.

TYPES OF CONTEMPORARY 3D ANIMATION:

1. 3D Video and Film
The most widely known. A three-dimensional visual feature of moving images within a digital
environment, it uses motion graphics to move the subjects around a 3D space. This type is
purely visual, which means there’s no interaction required.
2. Interactive 3D
This is a 3D production that features purely digital environment created in using 3D software.
While 3D video and film animation relies on the visual experience, this type involves
user interaction. This allows users to be in first person and move within the 3D world through a
computer screen, with mouse and keyboards as external controls.
3. Virtual Reality 3D
Among the 3D animation types, virtual reality is the one that has opened an entirely new world
for users. Like interactive 3D, this features purely digital environment created in a 3D software,
but is used and experienced in an immersive way. Virtual reality 3D requires a device, such
as Google Glass and Oculus, to allow its users to interact with the physical space. Of the types
of 3D animation, virtual reality 3D is the most immersive and complex to create.

INFLUENTIAL 3D ANIMATED FILMS

A. PHILIPPINES
RPG METANOIA (2010)
- first full-length 3D animated film in the Philippines.

URDUJA (2008)
- a 100-minute film showed the life and struggles of Princess Urduja, a warrior princess in
Pangasinan. Urduja is a product of teamwork among a group of Filipino animators, who used
the traditional animation process of hand drawing.

B. INTERNATIONAL
SNOW WHITE (1937)
- first feature length cel-animated film

AKIRA (1988)
- every one of the 172,000 frames of the film was hand drawn. Every light source was hand-
painted.
- used over 160,000 animation cels to create the detailed scenes and fluid movement in the
film. The use of cel animation meant that animators had to illustrate the background, middle,
and foreground of each scene on three different cels.
