PDSC MST 2 - 19

This document contains an exam on pulse and digital switching circuits. It has three sections: Section A contains three compulsory short answer questions on transistor switching characteristics, diode characteristics, and sampling gates. Section B contains three longer answer questions, including on the working principle and components of a monostable multivibrator, determining saturation conditions for a common emitter circuit, and calculating stable state voltages and currents in a bistable multivibrator. Alternatively, explaining the working of a Schmitt trigger with diagrams.

Subject - Pulse and Digital Switching Circuits (ECE-212)

2nd Year, 4th Semester

Time: 1 Hr. B. Tech ECE M. Marks: 15
MST II
Note: Section - A is compulsory. Do any two questions from Section - B.
Section - A
Q1. Define Delay time, rise & fall time and storage time with waveform in transistor
switching. (2)
Q2. Describe the piece-wise linear diode characteristics for 10mA and 50mA swings.
(2)
Q3. Why are sampling gates are called linear gates? (1)
Section - B
Q1. Explain the working principle of monostable multivibrator along with its circuit
diagram and waveforms and define the gate width ‘T’.

Q2. For a common emitter circuit, Vcc = 18 V, Rc = 4 kΩ and IB = 0.5 mA. (a)
Determine the value of hFE (min) for saturation to occur. (b) If Rc is changed to
1.5kΩ, will the transistor be saturated?
Q3. The fixed-bias bistable multivibrator uses NPN transistors with hFE = 25. The
circuit parameters are Vcc = 20V, VBB = 3V, Rc = 2 kΩ, R1 = 7 kΩ, R2 = 10 kΩ,
VCE(sat) = 0.5V, and VBE(sat) = 0.8V. Find the stable state voltages and currents.
OR
With the help of a neat circuit diagram and waveforms explain the working of a
Schmitt trigger. Also define LTP and UTP
