Mefenamic Acid Drug Study

A 39-year-old female patient, 5'2" tall and weighing 53kg, presents with a diagnosis of grand multiparity with 7 previous pregnancies and is currently 37 5/7 weeks pregnant. She is being given 500mg of mefenamic acid every 6 hours as needed for relief of acute to moderate pain. Mefenamic acid is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAD) that works by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis and provides analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic effects. Nurses should monitor for potential adverse effects like gastrointestinal upset, headaches, or rash and educate the patient about proper administration and potential side effects.
