Science Fair

Kendal Kerbrat completed a science fair project comparing three types of batteries: alkaline, rechargeable, and heavy duty. She hypothesized that alkaline batteries would provide the best value. She tested the batteries in flashlights in a dark room over several hours, timing how long each lasted. Rechargeable batteries lasted the longest at 273 minutes, followed by alkaline at 257 minutes and heavy duty at only 78 minutes. Calculations showed rechargeables had the lowest cost per minute of use, making them the best value battery. Kendal concluded rechargeables were the best purchase if one doesn't mind recharging them, but alkaline is a good cheaper alternative. The project helped her learn about science fairs and presentation software.

PROBLEM/QUESTION
• What type of battery is best for its price?
HYPOTHESIS
• In my opinion the Alkaline Battery will be the best
purchase. Although it did cost a little more, the price
is reasonable and the battery will last the longest.
MATERIALS
• To complete this project I needed
– Three of the same flashlights
– Three different types of batteries
• (Heavy Duty, Alkaline, and Rechargeable)
– A dark room
– A timer
– A calculator
PROCEDURE
• To complete this project I followed these steps-
1. Put batteries into flashlights.
2. Set batteries up in a dark room facing a black wall.
3. At the same time, turn on the flashlights.
4. Start timer and watch flashlights to see the process of how quickly they die.
5. Complete the equation to solve what battery is the best purchase (Price/Time=Cost Per Min)

Start: 45 Min: 60 Min: 78 Min: 252 Min: 257 Min: 267 Min: 273 Mn:
Alkaline and Rechargeable Heavy duty is dim Heavy Duty is almost dead Heavy Duty is dead Alkaline is dim Alkaline is dead Rechargeable is dim Rechargeable is dead
look equally as bright, but
the Heavy Duty looks
weak.
RESULTS/DATA
• At the start of the test the Alkaline and Rechargeable looked equally as bright, but the Heavy
Duty looked weak. The Heavy Duty stayed dim for quite awhile, and then died. The Alkaline and
Rechargeable dimmed slowly and then died.
Battery Type: Rechargeable Alkaline Heavy Duty
Price: $7.49 $2.25 $0.99
Time Lasted: 273 Min. 257 Min. 78 Min.
Cost Per Min: $0.00018 $0.0088 $0.013

The Heavy Duty cost almost 1.5 cents per minute to use, but the
Rechargeable and Alkaline are less than 1 cent per minute to use.
RESULTS/DATA CONTINUED

The Rechargeable lasted as much as 3.5 times longer than the Heavy Duty
and Alkaline. It also can be 150 time so that means the other batteries
would cost hundreds of dollars more than the Rechargeable to use.
CONCLUSION
• Although the Heavy Duty Battery cost the least amount, it would cost too much to match the
Alkaline or the Rechargeable. To start the Heavy Duty battery was weak and then died fast
compared to the others. The Alkaline and Rechargeable looked the same to start and dimmed
at the same pace for the most part. The alkaline died just a few minutes sooner than the
Rechargeable but it does cost less. If you do not mind spending a little more, and waiting to
recharge the Rechargeable battery each time it is your best bet. The Rechargeable battery can
recharge up to a 150 times but it takes 6.5 to be fully recharged, I would recommend having
two sets of the battery so that you can always have one charged as a back up. In conclusion, I
think spending the extra money make the Rechargeable batteries the best price for its quality.
If you chose to not want to put the time into charging your batteries, than the Alkaline would
be the best for your price.
Science Fair Reflection
Student Name: Kendal Kerbrat

Date: 2/15/18

Portfolio Artifact Description: Science Fair and Reflection- This activity revolves around the use of multimedia software for the creation of a
linear slide show. While there are countless uses for slide shows, you are going to use one to create a multimedia science fair project. Linear
slide show software is used in education by teachers a lot for presenting lecture notes to the class, but we are going to use it for a curricular
purpose.

What you learned: This assignment brought back a lot of old memories. I felt like I was in elementary school again completing my science fair
project. I had a great time deciding an experiment and doing it. I decided to do a traditional science fair project that has been done but I have
never done myself. It always looked like a lot of fun and informational as a child, so it was interesting doing it as an adult. I pick the battery
experiment because I honestly wanted to know what battery was best for its price. I completed the project and made the PowerPoint. My
boyfriend was kind enough, and secretly excited to do the project with me. He helped by setting up the lights as I was the photographer. We
then timed how long the batteries lasted per flashlight. This assignment had quite a few benefits to it. Not only was I able to find out what
batteries I should be purchasing, I also learned more about PowerPoint as well as making charts on excel.

National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS)•S Addressed: Knowledge Constructor, number, 3 was addressed. Students
critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning
experiences for themselves and others. Students plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for
their intellectual or creative pursuits.

Application of Skills Learned for the Future: I see myself using this project in the future. Science Fair projects are required in schools so doing it
as a slideshow makes it interesting for students. The traditional science fair bored are fun to make but I believe teaching students use of
technology is important. With this day and age technology is bigger than ever. PowerPoints are used often for presentations for business, so
this is the perfect opportunity to practice that skill.
