CHAPTER 1
This reflection paper aims to the analysis of the learnings and attention of the student in
the class discussion and activities. This paper also describes about the interaction of the student
and knowledge gained during the class. Also, through this paper the teacher can analyse what else
that is needed of the student to learn about the subject.
On the first day of the class, the teacher discussed about the introduction to Production and
Operations Management – Chapter 1. It specifically tackles about the Introduction to Operations
Management. This chapter aims to define and explain the operations management and present its
role in business. This chapter also describes the decisions that operations managers make and the
differences between service and manufacturing operations. And also to identify the major
historical developments in Operations Management.
Through the discussion of this chapter, I have learned that operations management is a
business function responsible for planning, coordinating, and controlling the resources needed to
produce products and services for a company. In other words, OM is a core business function in
every organization whether service or manufacturing, profit or not for profit business. Basically,
businesses have inputs such as manpower, materials, and money in order to serve outputs such as
goods and services. I have also learned that in transformation process, customer’s feedback and
performance information are important for the business to sustain its operation.
Also, businesses should not just maximize or add more value to its outputs but they should
also provide an efficient transformation which means performing activities well or at least possible
cost. We also discussed about the similarities and contrast of service and manufacturing
organizations and I also learned that operations management also has decisions to make and it has
two decisions that is the tactical decision which focuses on the specific day-to-day issues like
resources need, schedules, and quantities to produce; and strategic decision which focuses on the
long term planning and it is less frequent to plan.
Overall, I have found out that there are a lot more to learn about this subject most especially
since it is about business and its operation where we could also learn how to maximize profit and
wealth of our business. Where future entrepreneurs could gain knowledge for their future business.
As a student, I have learned that a business should be careful and pay more attention in this area
or maybe check every area of the business and have good decision making to result to a successful
and sustainable business in order to continue its operation and its contribution to its employees,
family, and the society as a whole.

CHAPTER 2
This reflection paper aims to the analysis of the learnings and attention of the student in
the class discussion and activities. This paper also describes about the interaction of the student
and knowledge gained during the class. Also, through this paper the teacher can analyse what else
that is needed of the student to learn about the subject.
On our second meeting, the teacher presented about the continuation to Production and
Operations Management – Chapter 2. It discusses about the Competitiveness, Strategy, and
Productivity. The teacher used the Eighth Edition of Operations Management book by William J.
Stevenson as a reference for this subject. This chapter aims to define and explain the significance
of competitiveness, strategy, and productivity in a business and as to how this factors affect
business decision making which will result to business success or failure.
In this chapter, I have learned that competitiveness shows how effectively an organization
meets the wants and needs of customers relative to others that offer similar goods or services.
Businesses could competitively compete to other business or gain more trust from their customers
if they could easily identify the wants and needs of their customers, if they could give appropriate
value to their product, and if they could allure more customers through advertising and promotion.
Also, in order for a business to be competitive they must maximize its resources specifically from
their product and service design, cost, location, quality, and even quick response. I also found out
that there are some factors that a business must have in order to have good operation this includes
flexibility, inventory management, supply chain management, and good service.
In addition, I have also learned that in order for a business to be successful it must have
good strategy and tactics to accomplish its mission and goals. Which operation strategy means the
approach, consistent with organization strategy that is used to guide the operations function. There
are two major strategy that a business may use that is the Quality-based strategies and Time-based
strategies which may differ or depend on their function. And this strategy has its formula to be
used effectively including distinctive competencies, environmental scanning, SWOT analysis,
order qualifiers, and order winners. And business’ success or failure may also be due to its internal
and external factors. I also learned that capital, quality, technology, and management are factors
that may affect productivity but of course there are also other ways to improve productivity which
I have also learned in this chapter.
Through the discussion, I was able to know the factors why some organizations fail and we
must focus to these factors if we want a successful business operation. We must not just focus on
profit maximization or productivity because through this subject I have learned that there are so
many factors to consider. Strategies also is a very significant aspect to focus on because having a
good strategy may definitely lead the business to a greater success.
