Script

The document discusses plans for a dystopian short film targeting teenagers. It will open with a voiceover explaining how "the moon began to glitch" while scenes of its effects are shown. The main character, a teenage boy, will notice a bright light outside and the film will end on a suspenseful note. Research will include studying dystopian film voiceovers and learning glitch effects to depict the glitching moon. Test shots will work on perfecting the moon glitch and indoor lighting.

THEMES:

in most dystopian movies, the world is being controlled by a higher

force/governement. if not, the world is chaotic with greed and
poverty as there are always those who become obsessed with their
freedom.
another repetitive theme in dystopian films is that the world always
seems to be ending, with crumbling cities and scorched lands.
however, i think the most successful dystopian short movies are
those set in a perfect world, where something darker or more
difficult to figure out makes it a dystopian world.
the characters in dystopian movies are usually quite similar, there is a
hero or heroine that figures out something the government or higher
force doesn’t want them to and, so, they end up saving the world
because of this new knowledge.

INSPIRATION:
my inspiration comes from a variety of films. the voiceover at the
beginning of my short film is a common theme in many dystopian
films, more specifically in teen dystopian films. at the beginning of
the giver and divergent, the main character starts to speak as the film
opens up. as well, the main characters in teen dystopian films are all
very similar with the same individuality and heroism.

the actual narrative of my story was strongly inspired by a one line

post i found on pinterest ‘the moon began to glitch’. after reading
this line i was able to generate loads of different pathways for it to
follow before settling on my final idea.
MY NARRATIVE:
i tried to create a very easy to follow storyline, which is how i came
up with the idea to do a voiceover at the beginning. this makes it
easy to introduce the audience into my world.

to start with, the short film opens up with a family playing in their
garden during the night, and then it cuts to a couple star-gazing. as it
switches between the two locations, the main character begins to
speak. he explains what has happened to the world, and as he
explains, the events actually happen on screen. for example, when he
says ‘the moon began to glitch’, on screen, the moon begins to glitch
and we see the characters reactions.

after my dystopian world has been set, it cuts to black before

opening back up on my main characters face. he runs indoors and
goes straight on his phone, to see how the world is taking this
disturbing event. social media posts pop up on screen as he reads,
which stop suddenly as he gets a phonecall from his friend. after a
brief exchange of thoughts over the sky failing, the main character
notices a bright light coming from outside, so he walks towards a
window. here is where my story will finish, to leave my audience in
suspense and wonder what the character was looking at outside.

MY CHARACTERS:
i will have a variety of characters in my short film, although, there will
only be one main character.

at the beginning, when the main character is speaking, in the

background i’m going to have a family playing outside and also a
couple star gazing. i’ve chosen these characters because it
emphasises that the event has effected everyone, and even though
they’re different, they still have similar reactions.
after the opening, i will cut to my main character: a young adult male
or older teenager. i have chosen this type of person because they
appeal more to my teenage audience. as well, in teen dystopian
films, a young male is usually cast as the main character. this is shown
in the maze runner and the giver. they are relatable to the audience
because of the same age group, so will have similar or expected
reactions to the event of those watching.

TARGET AUDIENCE:
for this project, i am aiming my dystopian short film at teenagers
around the age of 16 because there will be elements of teen
dystopian movies in my short.

my target audience are interested in the future and also dark

conspiracy theories, especially around the topic of space. this is
because my narrative hints at the unknown of space if the sky is a lie,
what’s out there and what’s caused this event?

the teenagers i’m aiming this at also really enjoy dystopian movies
where the action starts right at the beginning instead of progressing
into it.

TO ACHIEVE:
the purpose of my short dystopian film is to entertain my teenage
demographic. as well as this , i also aim to create a sense of mystery
for my audience about what is above us. by taking away one of the
world’s most important aspects, the sky, it makes the audience
question what really is up there and if we only believe what we’ve
been told because it’s been told by our governments. it encourages
the audience to think about what really could be in space. this links
very strongly with conspiracy theories such as the moon landings
were fake, my short film offers an answer that could explain why lots
of people believe the landings were fake.
RESEARCH AND TEST SHOTS:
before i shoot my final film, i’m going to study more examples of
dystopian movies that have voiceovers to see what technique is more
effective.

i will also watch many tutorials on youtube that use glitching effects
in after effects and premiere pro so that when it comes to my final
edit, i can successfully create the look i want to achieve with the sky.

i will also research into social media pop ups on the screen to
develop my editing skills.

for test shots, i will film the sky and try editing the glitching effect, as
i think this will be the most difficult effect to achieve.

i will also test the part where the main character runs indoors so that
i can see what lighting is best for it as there won’t to be any natural
lighting.
