Question 1 Through 4: Conversation Between A Student and Guidance Counselor
4/ Riri 2016
Meimei : Hello, Ikal. You must be pleased. After all how many students are lucky enough
to have been accepted at their first and their second choices?
Ikal : Not many I know. But I'm not sure yet which one to choose.
Meimei : Well, you seem to have doubts about the state university. But its biology
department has a fine reputation. What more could a biology major wants?
Ikal : Yeah. And they also have internships for seniors. But a friend told me that for
the first two years some lectures have a hundred and fifty students. You
probably wouldn't get to know any of of your teachers.
Meimei : Well, you might actually. Because those classes also have small discussion
sections. They meet twice a week and have no more than twenty students.
Ikal : I know. But I've heard that they are usually taught by graduate students. At
Vimala Sari College all classes are taught by professors.
Meimei : What about Java Dharma? Do you prefer a small town like Karanganyar? Or a
bigger place like the state capital?
Ikal : That doesn't matter to me. What I do care about is getting individual attention
from the faculty than making friends.
Meimei : Look, I've known you for four years now and you seem to be a pretty outgoing
person. I don't think you have any trouble making friends at the state
university. It sounds to me that you are learning toward Vimala Sari though?
Ikal : I am. The only problem is that the Vimala Sari's tuition is really high and I'm not
sure I can afford it.
Meimei : You could still apply for a student loan or sign up for a work-study program.
In 1871 the first passenger elevators were used in office buildings and allowed architects to
build higher than people could comfortably walk. Another innovation was in building
technique. In 1885 the steel skeleton was introduced and allowed for the construction of
tall building that could withstand high winds. We take for granted some of the other
inventions that enabled people to live and work in skyscrapers. For exaqmple, few people
realized that the telephone was necessary for vertical communication and that flush toilet
and vacuum incinerator made waste disposal possible. Now as we entered the age of super
skyscraper, some with mote than 200 floors, we see the need for even more technological
innovations, in the area of heating and cooling systems for example. For all their benefits,
these super tall building do cause problems though. For one thing they place enormous train
on parking and traffic row in urban areas. But let's leave behind these technical concerns

READING COMPREHENSION
The history of clinical nutrition, or the study of the relationship between health and how the
body takes in and utilizes food substances, can be divided into four distinct eras: the first
began in the nineteenth century and extended into the early twentieth century when it was
recognized for the first time that food contained constituents that were essential for human
function and that different foods provided different amounts of these essential agents. Near
Bahasa Inggris-UPI Tk. 4/ Riri 2016
the end of this era, research studies demostrated that rapid weight loss was associated with
nitrogen imbalance and could only be rectified by providing adequate dietary protein
associated with certain foods.
The second era was initiated in the early decades of the twentieth century and might be
called "the vitamin period." Vitamins came to be recognized in foods, and deficiency
syndromes were described. As vitamins became recognized as essential food constituents
necessary health, it became tempting to suggest that every disease and condition for which
there had been no previous effective treatment might be response to vitamin therapy. At
that point time, medical schools started to become more interested in having their curricula
integrate nutritional concepts into the basic sciences. Much of the focus of this education
was on the recognition of vitamin deficiency symptoms. Herein lay the beginning of what
ultimately turned from ignorance to denial of the value of nutritional therapies in medicine.
Reckless claims were made for effects of vitamins that went far beyond what could actually
be achieved from the use of them.
In the third era of nutritional history in the early 1950's to mid-1960's, vitamin therapy
began to fall into disrepute. Concomitant with this, nutrition education in medical schools
also became less popular. It was just a decade before this that many drug companies had
found their vitamin sales skyrocketing and were quick to supply practicing physicians with
generous samples of vitamins and literature extolling the virtue of supplementation for a
variety of health-related conditions. Expectations as to the success of vitamins in disease
control were exaggerated. As is known in retrospect, vitamin and mineral therapies are
much less effective when applied to health-crisis conditions than when applied to long-term
problems of under nutrition that lead to chronic health problems.
