Learners are given 5 sentence pairs and asked to use one of the FANBOYS conjunctions - for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so - to combine each pair into a single compound sentence. They are also instructed to make up their own conjunctions to join the sentence pairs in numbers 9 and 10.

Compound sentence exercise
Join the pairs of simple sentences (main clauses) together to make a
compound sentence. Choose carefully which of the FANBOYS conjunctions you will use. For numbers 9 and 10, make up two of your own.
For And Nor But Or Yet So
1. Ryan went to the shops. He bought some sweets.
2. I enjoy comics. I enjoy funny stories. 3. James loves playing football. He doesn’t like to swim. 4. Anita is great at all sports. She is unable to swim. 5. You didn’t eat your peas. You didn’t finish your beans.
