Condensor Design:: Shell Side
It is a shell and tube condenser, single pass, with water in tube side and fluid in the
shell side.
CALCULATION:
TEMPERATURE CALCULATION:
Assumed overall heat transfer coefficient = 600 W/m2 °C
(Referred from Coulson and Richardson vol-6 )
Th1 , Temperature of hot fluid at the inlet = 110 °C
Th2 , Temperature of hot fluid at the outlet = 80 °C
Tc1 , Temperature of cold fluid at the inlet = 25 °C
Tc2 , Temperature of coldfluid at the outlet = 50 °C
T LM TD = 57.46 °C
R = (Th1 - Th2) / (Tc2 - Tc1) = 1.2
S = (Tc2 - Tc1) / (Th1 – Tc1) = 0.3
From the graph using the values of R and S Temperature correction factor = 0.94
T LM TD = 0.94 * 57.46
T LM TD = 54 °C
We know that, Q = U A T LM TD
A = Q / (U T LM TD )
Trial Area = 25.26 m2 .
Surface area of Single tube = ∏ * D0 * L
= 3.14*0.03*4.88
a = 0.459 m2.
No of tubes = Total area / surface area of single tube
= 25.26 / .459
= 55 tubes.
DIMENSIONS:
Outer Diameter = 30 mm
Inner Diameter = 16.8 mm
Length of the tube = 4.88 m
Use square pitch P t =1.25*30 = 37.5 mm
Tube bundle diameter = D0 (N/n)1/2.263
N=0.158 , K=2.263 (Referred from Coulson and Richardson vol-6 table 12.4)
Tube bundle diameter = 398.6 mm
No of tubes in the center row = Db / Pt = 11 tubes
