Condensor Design:: Shell Side

This document details the design calculations for a shell and tube condenser. It is a single pass condenser with water in the tube side and another fluid in the shell side. Calculations are shown to determine the required surface area, number of tubes, tube dimensions, shell diameter, and heat transfer coefficients on both sides. The overall heat transfer coefficient of the condenser is calculated to be 576.32 W/m2 °C based on the shell and tube side coefficients.

CONDENSOR DESIGN:

It is a shell and tube condenser, single pass, with water in tube side and fluid in the
shell side.
CALCULATION:
TEMPERATURE CALCULATION:
Assumed overall heat transfer coefficient = 600 W/m2 °C
(Referred from Coulson and Richardson vol-6 )
Th1 , Temperature of hot fluid at the inlet = 110 °C
Th2 , Temperature of hot fluid at the outlet = 80 °C
Tc1 , Temperature of cold fluid at the inlet = 25 °C
Tc2 , Temperature of coldfluid at the outlet = 50 °C
T LM TD = 57.46 °C
R = (Th1 - Th2) / (Tc2 - Tc1) = 1.2
S = (Tc2 - Tc1) / (Th1 – Tc1) = 0.3
From the graph using the values of R and S Temperature correction factor = 0.94
T LM TD = 0.94 * 57.46
T LM TD = 54 °C
We know that, Q = U A T LM TD
A = Q / (U T LM TD )
Trial Area = 25.26 m2 .
Surface area of Single tube = ∏ * D0 * L
= 3.14*0.03*4.88
a = 0.459 m2.
No of tubes = Total area / surface area of single tube
= 25.26 / .459
= 55 tubes.
DIMENSIONS:
Outer Diameter = 30 mm
Inner Diameter = 16.8 mm
Length of the tube = 4.88 m
Use square pitch P t =1.25*30 = 37.5 mm
Tube bundle diameter = D0 (N/n)1/2.263
N=0.158 , K=2.263 (Referred from Coulson and Richardson vol-6 table 12.4)
Tube bundle diameter = 398.6 mm
No of tubes in the center row = Db / Pt = 11 tubes

SHELL SIDE HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT:

Estimate tube temperature T w assume condensing co-efficient of 1500 W/m2 °C
Mean temperature:
Shell side = (110+80) / 2 = 95 °C
Tube side = (25+50) / 2 = 37.5 °C
(95- Tw) *1500 = (97 – 37.5) *600
Tw = 91 °C
Properties at 91 °C;
Viscosity = 5.8*10-4 N s /m2
Density = 1640 Kg/m3
Heat transfer co-efficient = 0.14 W/m2 °C
Density of Vapor = 11.035 Kg/m3
Mass velocity = W/ (L*N) = 9.75*10-3 Kg/m s
Nr = 2/3*11 = 7

H0 = 0.95*Kc [{ρ*(ρ – ρv apour) g }/ {5.8*10-4 *0.0975} ]1/3 Nr -1/6

SHELL SIDE HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT = 1442.46 W/m2 °C
TUBE SIDE HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT:
Tube side cross sectional area = 0.785*(16.8*10-3)2*55 / 4
A= 3.046*10-3 m2
Density of tube side fluid = 985.3 Kg/m3
Tube velocity = 15.483/ (985.3*3.046*10-3) = 3.94 m/s
Hi = 4200(1.35+0.02T w)*(v0.8/d0.2)
TUBE SIDE HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT = 15289.93 W/m2 °C.

OVERALL SIDE HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT:

1/U = 1/h0 + 1/hi + {d0 ln(d0/di)}/2kw + (d0 /di)*(1/hi) + (d i /d0)*(1/h0).
U=576.32 W/m2 °C.
OVERALL SIDE HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT =576.32 W/m2 °C.
