Transaction Processing System: Komal Mundhra Dhwani Patel Drishti Sharaf

Transaction processing systems collect, store, modify, and retrieve transactions for organizations. One of the first was the SABRE airline reservation system from 1960. For a system to qualify as a transaction processing system, transactions must pass the ACID test ensuring atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability. Transaction processing systems are characterized by rapid response, reliability, inflexibility, and controlled processing. They include hardware, software, and people components.

TRANSACTION PROCESSING SYSTEM

TRANSACTION PROCESSING SYSTEMS are collect, store, modify and

retrieve the transactions of an organisation. A transaction is an event that
generates or modifies data that is eventually stored on an information
system. The main information processes are collecting and storing.
EXAMPLE:- Airline reservation systems, Electronic transfer of funds, Bank
account processing systems.
HISTORY OF TPS
● One of the first transaction processing systems was American Airline
SABRE system, which became operational in 1960. Designed to
process up to 83,000 transactions a day, the system ran on two IBM
7090 computers.
● SABRE was migrated to IBM System/360 computers in 1972, and
became an IBM product first as Airline control Program (ACP) and
later as Transaction Processing Facility (TPF). In addition to airlines
TPF is used by large banks, credit card companies, and hotel chains.
QUALIFIERS
In order to qualify as a TPS, transactions made by the system must pass
the ACID test. The ACID tests refers to the following four pre-requisites:
1. Atomicity - Atomicity means that a transaction is either completed in
full or not at all.
2. Consistency - TPS systems exist within a set of operating rules (or
integrity constraints).
3. Isolation -Transactions must appear to take place in isolation.
4. Durability - Once transactions are completed they cannot be undone.
To ensure that this is the case even if the TPS suffers failure, a log will be
created to document all completed transactions.
These four conditions ensure that TPS systems carry out their transactions
in a methodical, standardized and reliable manner.
CHARACTERISTICS OF TPS

The four important characteristics of a TPS are:

❖ RAPID RESPONSE
❖ RELIABILITY
❖ INFLEXIBILITY
❖ CONTROLLED PROCESSING
COMPONENTS OF TPS
➢ The components of a TPS include hardware, software and
people. The most important component of a TPS are people.
➢ People in a TPS can be divided into 3 categories: users, participants
and people from the environment.
TYPES OF TPS
1.Batch Transaction Processing-
BTP collects the transaction data as a group and processes it later after
time delay as batches of identical data. Large volumes have lower
processing costs. Collected and stored offline using magnetic tape or
paper.
Examples of BTP systems are cheque clearance, bill generation, credit card
transactions.
Advantages of BTP:-
A. Control over time of processing.
B. Standardization

Disadvantages of BTP :-
A. Schedule is predetermined
B. Errors cannot be corrected during processing
C. Sorting transaction data is expensive and time consuming.
2. Real-Time Transaction Processing-
RTTP is the immediate processing of data. Provides instant confirmation
yet requires access to online database. Involves using terminal or
workstation to enter data and display results and a large number of users
to simultaneously perform transactions. Uses computer network to link
terminals to mainframe computer and database.
Examples of RTTP systems are reservation system , library loan system.
Advantages of RTTP:-
A. Error correction can be immediate .
B. Data is processed as demand

Disadvantages of RTTP :-
A. Concurrency
B. Atomicity
DATA VALIDATION

It is used to check the entry of transaction data. Involves procedures to

ensure transactions are correct and accurately stored in the database.
It involves:-
a.Transaction Initiation
b.Field Checking
DATA PROCESSING CYCLE

1. Data Entry
2. Database Maintenance
3. Document/Report Generation
4. Inquiry Processing:
