Crane work safety protocol


 Barricades, barriers or caution tape must be used to prevent entry into a lift
area, immediate area of the crane and the turn radius of the crane. Traffic
and pedestrian traffic pattern must be considered. Only authorized personnel
are allowed in the area.
 Any personnel working within the lifting area must wear personal protective
equipment, including hard hats and safety shoes during operations.
 Prior to starting work, the crane operator must do a complete walk around
the equipment to verify the safety of the crane and of the surrounding area
including overhead hazards.
 All controls must be tested by the crane operator prior to operating the
equipment. Any malfunctions must be corrected or repaired before the
hoisting or lifting operations can begin.
 A signal man must be used if the area of operations is not in direct line of
sight from the operator of the crane.
o The crane operator must respond to signals only from a trained signal
person
o The crane operator must respond to an emergency stop signal
regardless of the originator of the signal.
 At no time should personnel work under a suspended load
 At no time should suspended loads be left unattended without proper
safeguards
 The operator is responsible to secure any unattended hoisting equipment.

 Whenever there is doubts as to the safety, the operator has the authority
and obligation to stop all hoisting activities and refuse to handle loads until
safety has been assured
 Safety & Security Services may, at any time safety hazards are detected,
stop hoisting operations and requests that corrective measures be taken.
Once corrective measures are taken and that safety is assured, hoisting
operations may resume.
