MV Assignment - 1

This document contains 10 problems related to harmonic motion and mechanical vibrations. Problem 1 asks to split a harmonic motion into two motions with different phase angles. Problem 2 asks to plot a displacement vs time diagram and calculate acceleration at a time for a slider crank mechanism. Problem 3 asks to represent some complex numbers in exponential and rectangular forms. Problem 4 asks to calculate the natural frequency of a car spring system. The remaining problems involve calculating damping ratios, amplitudes, frequencies, and other characteristics for various vibrating systems with springs, masses, and damping.

MV Assignment – 1 Date: 14.02.

2019

1. Split up the harmonic motion x = 10 sin (t + π/6) into two harmonic motions one having a phase angle of zero and
the other of 46o.
2. The displacement of the slider in the slider crank mechanism is given by x = 24cos8πt + 3/2cos16πt. Plot a
displacement versus time diagram. What is the acceleration of the piston at t = 1/8 sec.
3. Represent the following complex numbers in exponential form : (i) -3 + i4 (ii) -3 – i4. And the following complex
numbers in rectangular form : (i) -15ei6 (ii) 14e-i4.
4. A car having a mass of 1500 kg deflects its spring 3 cm under its own load. Find the natural frequency of car in vertical
direction.
5. Find the natural frequency of the system shown in fig. 1.

Fig.1.
6. The mass of a vibrating system weighs 20 N and is made to vibrate in a viscous medium. Determine the damping ratio
and damping coefficient when a harmonic exciting force of 30 N results in a resonant amplitude of 15 mm with a
period of 0.2 sec.
7. A gun barrel of mass W kg has a recoil spring whose stiffness is k N/m. If W = 450 kg, k = 3.6 x 107 N/m and the barrel
recoils 1 m on firing, determine
(a) The initial recoil velocity of the barrel.
(b) The critical damping coefficient of a dashpot which is engaged at the end of the recoil stroke.
(c) The time required for the barrel to return to a position 5 cm from the initial position.
8. A machine has a mass of 200 kg. It is placed on two different isolators and the corresponding free vibration records
are shown in Fig. 2 (a) and (b). Determine in each case the type of damping and its characteristics. Also determine the
undamped natural frequencies.

Fig.2.
9. A mass of 200 kg is suspended on a spring having a scale of 30000 N/m and is acted upon by a harmonic force of 80 N
at the undamped natural frequency. The damping may be considered to be viscous with a coefficient of 200 N.sec/m.
Calculate
(a) The undamped natural frequency
(b) The amplitude of vibration of the mass, and
(c) The phase difference between the force and the displacement.
10. A reciprocating pump 300 kg is driven through a belt by an electric motor at 4000 r.p.m. The pump is mounted on
isolators with a total stiffness 15 M N/m and damping 6 k Ns/m. Determine the vibratory amplitude of the pump at
the running speed due a fundamental harmonic force of excitation 2 kN. Determine the amplitude at resonance also.
