THE SHEM ANGEL RITUAL CARDS;

INTRODUCTION

The Names of God, as approached within Kabbalistic, Hermetic, and Esoteric Christian
paradigms, have become a source of a variety of methods for Humankind to connect to Divinity
within Western mysticism. Grimoire traditionalists, magical lodges, esoteric mystics, and
theurgic practitioners have all recognized the power of using Divine Names in their ritual
practice, meditations, and initiations.

Many view them as being the key to unlocking all the metaphysical power behind their
operations. In modern magical practice, for example, it is common to make use of a given
Hierarchy that includes a “chain of command” type of structure, where the Divine Name of God
is honored first, and then the lesser beings are called upon in descending order.

The purpose of the Shem Angel Ritual Cards is to aid in meditations, invocations, and to
act as talismanic energies for your own rituals and ceremonies. Unlike Tarot, Lenormand, or
Oracle cards, these cards are not to be drawn randomly or used for divination, but are made to
choose your Angel carefully and use the physical cards for meditation focal points, as a living
bridge between their physical and spiritual counterparts, and to aid in attracting their Virtues
towards you. What we aim to do with the Shem Angel Ritual Cards is to present the most
practical information for users to begin working with these Divine Names through their Angelic
forms, and to provide for them a medium which they can use for Contemplative Meditation and
Invocation of their respective virtues and powers.

As a brief introduction to the Angels of the Shem Ha-Mephorash, it is important to

understand at least how they came about. Kabbalistic methods often include transposing the
letters of significant Divine Names, looking deeper into speculative symbolic interpretation, and
even calculating numerologically equivalent words and comparing them as being spiritually
parallel (this is known as ‘Gematria’). Here we see, quite literally, several different types of
Kabbalistic ‘word-play’ that are employed to bring about a more mystical understanding of the
Hebrew language. The inherent mysticism of the Hebrew alphabet itself can lead one into many
rabbit holes of insights. However, being that the ultimate theory of such practices are an
exercise in realizing that everything is Divinely connected anyway, we would urge our readers to
stay focused on the most relevant insights when ‘connecting the dots.’

Newcomers to this point of study and practical use should keep this activity to a
minimum, and focus on direct insights through meditation and devotional invocation rather than
intellectual analysis. This concept is an attempt to define metaphysical processes and is
therefore difficult to explain in plain language, but the basic concept is that once you start
working with these entities, you may become receptive to new understandings, practical
opportunities regarding one's material or spiritual lifestyle, changes in personal behavior, or
even changes in one's own environment such as your job, family, finances, relationships,
spiritual life, personal attitudes and emotions, etc.

1
The key here is simple; developing Awareness. In keeping with the theory of ‘meeting
God halfway’, this concept entails that we must carefully alter our day to day perception in order
to properly recognize the subtle impacts of spiritual work, and then acting in accordance with the
blessings we can then accurately perceive. This is never an exact science, and is quite a
difficult thing to assess, but we must use the tools we have been given to access spiritual
understanding. This may include physical procedures such as fasting or abstinence for a time
before undergoing any important theurgic operation, mental procedures such as quieting the
mind before meditation and ceasing idle chatter, or even focusing one's thoughts and prayers
upon higher ideals of virtuous living with a mindfulness of upright action with all those we come
in contact with. This is also why simple things like adorning one’s altar carefully, wearing
ceremonial regalia, and adopting a mindset of reverence for the Divine is so important to our
work.

In doing such things the spiritual worker is preparing themselves within and without, on
the mundane levels and on the higher frequencies of the Subtle Bodies and the Planes with
which those correspond. Simply put: this work is sacred. Treat it as such, without a trace of
mere curiosity or shallow frivolity. Angels are powerful beings and are not to be treated as spirits
bound to our will. Remember this, and by treating them with respect, these entities will respond
positively to those willing and worthy to perform the Great Work.

Turning back to the actual methods of deriving the names of the Shem Ha-Mephorash
specifically, the three lettered Divine Names were created through three verses of Biblical
scripture; that of Exodus chapter 14, verses 19-21. By aligning the verses, each sharing the
number of 72 letters, atop one another, with the middle verse being written backwards, the three
lettered Divine Names, are read from top to bottom. This produces each of the Divine Names, to
which are further added the suffixes of “-el” or “-iah”, which is said to represent the qualities of
masculine and feminine attributes. These indicate their Angelic counterparts, and, like climbing
a ladder, or as the previously mentioned ‘chain of command’ structure, one can access the
virtues of each Name through its Angel.

With the Angels of the Shem Ha-Mephorash, each Divine Name rules particular
qualities, carried through by the attributes and abilities of their Angels. For our correspondences
listed here, we have sourced Robert Ambelain's “The Practical Kabbalah” as a traditional set of
descriptions for each Shem Angel, listed at the end of this manual.

2
A CONSECRATION RITUAL

In an attempt to make our methods as directly effective as possible, we recommend

treating your cards as actual talismans, physical mediums for the spiritual forces they represent.
In order to do this, you may first ritually consecrate your deck, if you so choose to bless your
cards in such a manner.

The Consecration Ritual may be done with the entire deck of cards as a whole. Aside
from the deck, this ritual will require:

● 4 Candles (any size, preferably white in color), arranged in a diamond form around the
deck upon your altar table
● A black cloth, small towel, or clean black handkerchief, covering the cards
● A Censer, with incense such as frankincense and/or myrrh
● A small cup of Water with a pinch of Salt mixed in

Begin your ritual by making this short prayer to the Lord, as it is an adaptation of the
Jewish prayer, the “Ana-B’koach” (We Beg Thee):

“O Lord, I beg You, with the strength of Your right hand's greatness, unbound my tangled sins.
Accept the prayer of your servant; strengthen me, purify me, O Awesome One. Please, O
Strong One, those who foster Your unity, guard me like the pupil of an eye. Bless me, purify me,
show me pity, may Your righteousness always recompense me. Powerful Holy One, with Your
abundant goodness, guide Your servant. One and only Exalted One, turn to me as I proclaim
Your holiness. Accept my plea and hear my cry, O Knower of Mysteries. Blessed is the Name of
His Glorious Kingdom for all eternity.”

After you have said this introductory prayer, you may then proceed to the lighting of the
candles and the intonation of the letters of the Tetragrammaton, the four lettered Name of God.
First, you will light the top candle, furthest away from you. While you do this, intone or ‘vibrate’
the letter “YOD”. Vibration should be a deep and soulful intonation that resounds in your body,
but it does not necessarily need to be loud, either. Stretch the intonation out for several seconds
long, and imagine your voice carrying out into the far reaches of the universe.

Next, light the candle on the left side of the deck of cards and intone the letter “HAY”, in
a similar manner as you did the first letter. Then, light the candle of the bottom of the diamond
nearest you, and intone “VAV”. Lastly, you will light the candle on the right side of the diamond
and intone the final “HAY”. Now, carefully remove the black covering from the deck.

3
Prepare your Water with a pinch of Salt, and dip a finger into the water, and lightly anoint the
corners of the deck while saying:

“I purify these cards with the Elements of Earth and Water!”

Now add some incense to the Censer and pass it over the deck while saying:

“I consecrate these cards with the Elements of Air and Fire!”

Having done this, place your dominant hand upon the deck, and say:

“I do hereby release these cards from darkness and introduce them to the Light of the Lord. I
consecrate these cards as talismanic objects that shall bring forth the Wisdom, Strength, and
Beauty of their Angels. May these cards be blessed to become portals of Consciousness,
Force, and Form, and the Knowledge that results therefrom. In the Name of the Most High
Creator of All, Amen.”

After you have finished, it would be wise to keep the deck in a special bag or box, away
from prying eyes or from being handled by others. This will keep the etheric or astral energies of
others from interfering with the balanced signature your cards now carry. If you handle your
cards frequently, it may be a good idea to purify and consecrate them every now and then.

4
HOW TO USE YOUR CARDS

As for how to use your Shem Angel Ritual Cards, there are several possibilities we will
explore. The first method to use your cards would be for Contemplative Meditation. After you
have found the Angel that rules that specific day, choose that Angel’s card and prepare yourself
for at least 10 minutes of peaceful contemplation. Once you have acclimated yourself to both
the imagery of the cards themselves and also the habits of meditation itself, you may increase
the time spent in each session. Beginners should be aware that intrusive thoughts and
distractions of both a physical and mental nature will present themselves, however, one should
let these things pass without being too disturbed by their persistence.

It is recommended to find yourself a quiet room where you will not be disturbed, one
where you can set up a couple of candles on a cleared altar or tabletop. Find some way to prop
up your Angel card, and place two candles on either side. To begin, turn off all electric lights and
ignite your candles. Sit in a comfortable position that you will be able to keep for a while, with a
good view of the card; close enough to view the central Seal clearly. Say a short personal
prayer to the Lord, and ask for the Virtues of this Angel to find their way into your very soul.
Then address the Angel directly, and ask for guidance in whatever way you need. Now clear
your thoughts as best as you are able, and begin breathing slowly and rhythmically. You will
soon feel your body start to calm, and this will help your mind do the same. Now shift your focus
onto the central Seal of the Angel. Gazing at it for long periods of time in this receptive and
meditative state, much like the Eastern ‘mandalas’, will connect you to the Angel, and the Angel
to you. This is why we previously recommended you consecrate your cards, because having a
metaphysically active set of physical objects that can harness spiritual energy is important for all
of the following practices.

If you find yourself having difficulty with intrusive thoughts, do a bit of research
beforehand on the Angel and its correspondences, found in this manual. Focus on how you can
integrate these corresponding blessings into your life, and make them part of the meditation.
This is Active Contemplation, and Passive Meditation would be simply allowing yourself to bask
in the energy of the Angel that you requested in your opening prayers.

Notice that we have not provided a ritualized set of prayers for the Contemplative
Meditation method, because growing comfortable with the entire process is a very important
one, and getting past the need for pre-written ritual is a good step towards building an honest
and genuine relationship with these aspects of Divinity. You will find that it opens a channel of
smooth interaction and will improve your ability to pray, whether with a script or without.

If you are planning on furthering your connection to these Angels, you may wish to take
your meditations one step further by trying the Invocation method. This is a similar arrangement,
but with a more active approach to integrating the life of the Angel into your own.

5
For the Invocation, you will begin much the same way you did with the previous method;
setting up your candles and entering a state of ritual consciousness through a bit of meditation.
This time, however, the method is much more ritualistic and utilizes a formal approach with a
minimum of regalia. If you have a robe, gown, or alb of white color to wear, it is recommended to
use one as long as it is clean and presentable. If not, wear clean white clothing of any manner.
The color white here represents purity of body, mind, and soul.

Once you have procured your suitable attire, the only other recommended piece of
regalia is the Lamen. This is basically a decorative ritual necklace that bears significant
symbolism and acts as a protective device while also being an emblem of the Source, and it is
by this Name which we work in devotion. It should be white in color, and should bear the
Tetragrammaton Tetractys, pictured below. Try to find some white cord, string, or ribbon you
can use for suspension. As for the Lamen itself, it can be made out of any material so long as it
is convenient and a representation of your best artistic efforts. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just
genuine. The letters of the Sacred Name should be written in red.

You will also be much more specific in your wording when you pray for the virtues and
influences that the Angel rules over, and you will be direct in your approach when performing
the invocation, which is as follows:

“O Lord, Bless my endeavor to commune with your Angel, [name], and provide for me Your
Divine protection and guidance in doing so, so as to benefit from Your blessings in the best
possible way.

O glorious Angel [intone name], I humbly ask you to descend, reside, and remain, so as to
positively empower my thoughts, words, and actions with your virtues, powers, and influences.
Thee I invoke, O Angel of the Lord, Thee I invoke!”

6
Once you have said this prayer, read the scripture printed upon the card, and repeat the
intonation of the name of the Angel over and over like a mantra. Say it slowly, and gaze at the
central Angelic Seal in the middle of the card while repeating the name as an invocation. Let
yourself become lost in the repetitions and let your vision and spiritual self dissolve into the Seal
itself, allowing any random thoughts or concerns pass through you as you focus your
concentration upon the Seal.

After completing this invocation session, and when you feel you have properly made any
sort of connection with this angelic energy, you may make a prayerful declaration of intent or a
petition to the Angel itself, and here you may state your reason for calling upon the Angel,
explain yourself fully and honestly. Even if you cannot in any physical way perceive its
presence, speak as if the Angel were right before you, and be candid about your problems or
your requests that you may have. Know that you now, even for just this moment, share a
connection that binds your soul to the energies of this aspect of Divinity.

When finished, it is heavily recommended to give a heartfelt prayer of thanksgiving. The

final chapter of the book of Psalms is a great choice for expressing praise for a successful
operation or a short prayer of gratitude. Formally dismiss the angel with thankfulness, extinguish
your candles, and go about your evening as you regain your everyday consciousness.

For those who desire a bit more of an involved and formal ceremony, you should
precede the entire Invocation ritual with the following prayer adapted from the Sefer Ha-Yashar;
the Book of the Just. Wake before sunrise on the day of your operation, and after washing your
hands and face, put on the robe and Lamen, and read this prayer knowing that it is a
preparation to use the Divine Names of God. For our purposes it relates directly to any usage of
the Tetragrammaton, other Holy Names, and most specifically, the Divine Names of the Shem
ha-Mephorash and their Angelic counterparts. Using this prayer, you should adopt a deep state
of solemnity and humility, as you are not only asking to use the Divine Names, but that they
work through you. This is a very sacred operation and requires the utmost respect and
admiration for the Lord and that which he reveals to us.

When you are finished with this prayer, bow your head in reverence, and meditate in
silence until the sun has risen. Be mindful of your actions throughout the day, and make the
best attempts to let the spirit of the Lord guide you as you work towards your operation with the
Shem Angel. The Prayer is as follows:

7
“Blessed and blessed even more is Thy Name, and exalted among all blessing and praise, for
Thy Name is in Thee. And Thy Name is set before all. And before Thy Name are regiments of
fire and flame praising Thy Name. And the Seraphim glorify Thy Name. And the Chayot sanctify
Thy Name. And the Auphanim purify Thy Name. For from Thy Name all creatures have awe,
and at Thy Name they do not look. And from Thy Name even the sea recedes, and all the surge
of its waves lets Thy Name be magnificent. Earth roams if you look at it, and its pillars are
shattered by the fear of Thy Name. And each inhabitant of the mountainside of each fortress
and each abode trembles and fears Thee, and are in awe of Thy Name. Heaven and earth and
their inhabitants and the primal deep, and the netherworld, and Sheol, and wasteland and the
land of the shadows of death, man and cattle, mountains and hills, seas and rivers, fire and hail,
snow and smoke, great wind and dew and rain, angels of fire and angels of water sanctify Thy
Name. For from Thy Name they vacillate, and all of them sanctify Thy Name saying ‘Holy, Holy,
Holy’.

And all who have a breath of living spirit in their nose with fair tongue give Glory to Thy Name. I
also am Thy servant. I am like one who is wretched, and seeing trouble and dust and ash
downcast in the heart, and poor and pauper, faint-hearted and with lowly spirit, like maggots and
worms, I am like a passing shadow and a flower of the field. I came and I went by Thy great and
awesome Name, that Thou hast compassion with me and that Thou art compassionate to me
and givest me wisdom.

For I came in prayer, with broken heart but clear language and impatience to seek compassion
before the Throne of Thy Glory, in order to find grace and compassion and forgiveness before
Thee. For Thou art close to all who are close to Thee. Please grant my request, O Lord, my rock
and my redeemer. Amen.”

USING YOUR ANGEL CARDS TO DEVELOP A DEVOTIONAL RELATIONSHIP

Some users may wish to work with a specific Angel over a longer period of time, instead
of only on the day that it rules. This practice is known as forming a devotional relationship, and
you will use the Invocation method over a period of time.

Any reasonable amount of days should be worked out beforehand. If the Angel that you
are working with rules such specific attributes that match with a given Sphere upon the
Kabbalistic Tree of Life, for example, or with a certain Planet or Element, explore the
numerology of that correspondence and use that many days for your devotion. For example, if
your chosen Angel rules something like Mercy or Compassion, or even things like Prosperity
and Material Success, you would want your devotion to be done over the course of once per
four days, because these attributes align with the sphere of Chesed, the fourth sphere on the
Tree, and also the Planet Jupiter, both of which rules these kinds of Divine prosperity.

What is most important is that you develop a serious relationship. For specifics on how
to perform your actual devotions, you may consider burning incense and candles during your
time spent in meditation or invocation, as a suitable offering. Others may include a daily glass of
water or wine, or fresh flowers, accompanied by sincere prayers that reveal your intentions.
Speak clearly and directly, but also from the heart. Your words will take on much more meaning
and may make all the difference when being heard.

The cards, once consecrated, may also serve as a suitable scrying aid for those with a
talent for perceiving crystal visions. Placing a card flat on the altar with the stand and crystal
scrying stone on top would be a useful experiment when conjuring the Shem Angel. However,
this practice is advanced, and we would recommend the user exercise caution when
approaching direct evocation methods, which is why we do not give such instructions here.
Rather, you may refer to those given by Robert Ambelain in his ‘Practical Kabbalah’, which is
also a good resource for information on ceremonial regalia, ritual implements, and similar
practical instruction. The approach we present here is quite simplified, made for a level of
accessibility that will still be effective.

The next section gives a full list of each Divine Name, its Angel, its number, its
corresponding scripture in the ‘Names of God’ Biblical translation(which parallels the KJV and
also preserves the Divine Names, easily found online), its ruling days, and a brief description of
its attributes. Use these charts to plan your approach to working with each Shem Angel.
