Mental Math Game

The document outlines the rules for a mental math game consisting of 3 rounds that test participants' mental math skills through individual, paired, and timed question rounds. Points are earned for correct answers in the first 2 rounds, while the third round challenges players to answer as many simultaneous equations as possible in 1 minute. The final scores from all rounds are combined to determine the winning team.

MENTAL MATH GAME

 The game will test the participant’s ability to mentally perform basic and advance mathematical operations with
real numbers.
 Each team will be represented by two students from two different levels: (Grade 7 and 8, Grade 9 and 10, Grade 11
and 12) who will work individually in the first round, by pair in the second round and one representative in the last
round.

 Round 1: NOVICE
o Participants will earn points individually. For every correct response, the participant receives 3 points.
o The questions will be read twice. Then, the Host will say “GO”, only then the participants may start writing
their FINAL ANSWER on the illustration boards given to them and, at the same time, the start of the 8-
second countdown timer. All participants should raise their boards and show their final answers after the
time allotted for the specified question.
o Example Question: 15 + 6 - 13 + 12 = ______. Answer: 20

 Round 2: ADVANCE
o The team should choose who the Master and Apprentice will be. The Apprentice may assist his Master in
deciding on their answer. The Master is the only participant allowed to press the buzzer and deliver their
answer. For every correct response, the pair receives 5 points.
o There will be 10 questions for this round which will be answered orally.
o The questions will be read twice. The Master may already press the buzzer to deliver their answer orally.
Five seconds will be given for him to deliver his answer. This first answer will always be his official answer.
o If he gets the correct answer, then the Host will proceed to the next question. If he fails, the other three
Masters should allow the Host to repeat/complete the question and only then, they may attempt to “steal”.
If in this second attempt, the other Master fails to deliver the answer, the question will be considered void
and hence, will proceed to the next.
o Example Question: 3 ___ 5 ___ 6 = 2. Answer: 3+5-6

 Round 3: EXPERT
o This round is for the Masters alone. For every correct response, the Master receives 8 points.
o The total score from the previous round will be ranked— the highest pointer plays first, second highest
pointer plays next etc. While a Master is playing the game, the other Masters will be secluded in another
room.
o The objective of the round is to test the Master’s ability to answer as many equations as he can in a 1-minute
time frame.
o The equations will be simultaneous. The Host begins with an equation which then will be answered by the
Master. The Master will deliver his answer and confirms this by pressing the buzzer.
o From the CORRECT ANSWER in the previous equation, the Host immediately continues by adding/
dividing/ multiplying/ subtracting another number. This will continue REGARDLESS of the correctness of
the response of the Master.
o Each Master is given a POWER TO RESET. This power resets the 2-minute time frame, thus voiding the
score earned in the given set. A new set of simultaneous equations will be given. However, using this power
results in a deduction of 10 points in the final score at the end of the game.

 All the scores from the first to the last round will be added. The result will be the basis in determining the final team
standing.
