When we first were asked to think of a leader that exemplifies what a true leader is,
I was stuck on who I would discuss. After some thought, I came up with LeBron James. He
demonstrates great leadership qualities both on and off the court. Whether it be leading his
team to championships year after year, or building schools for less fortunate kids, he has done
it all. In fact, he recently just opened the “I promise” school which is a public elementary school
in Akron, OH, supported by the LeBron James Family Foundation, and specifically aimed at at-
risk children. Throughout his career, he has made nine finals appearances and won three of
them. As you can see, he has had a solid track record within his leadership role. LeBron has
taken many leadership roles throughout his life time and he would not have been successful if
The quote that I believe exemplifies excellence in all five leadership practices is,
“Commitment is a big part of what I am and what I believe. How committed are you to
winning? How committed are you to being a good friend? To being trustworthy? To being
successful? How committed are you to being a good father, a good teammate, a good role
model? There’s that moment every morning when you look in the mirror: Are you committed,
or are you not?” (LeBron James) After reading this quote several times, it left me thinking about
what message he was trying to send through this. For those of you who look up to LeBron, will
realize that he is attempting to model the way and is leading by example. He wants you to be a
good person, be a supportive friend, and strive to be great. If you ask me, I feel as though those

three points are the backbone of leaving behind your own legacy. Similar to LeBron, there are
many athletes doing similar acts of kindness. For example, Kevin Durant pledged a 10-year, $10
million commitment to College Track last year. In addition, he plans to open The Durant Center
in Prince George’s County, Maryland. The goal of this is to hopefully increase the number of
low-income and first-generation college graduates. As you can see, both LeBron and KD have a
shared vision on their mark in the community. Despite coming from a corrupt neighborhood in
Akron, Ohio, LeBron didn’t take the same route every other teenager did in that area. He
challenged himself through basketball, so he didn’t have to settle for what his environment and
society was offering. With all that LeBron has done and continues to do for the community, it
opens up the eyes of others to do similar things. Giving back to where you come from is a big
value his and as he continues to do good, more people will follow in his footsteps. In addition,
LeBron is a big family guy. He does nearly everything for his family or to help families that were
in similar situations to him growing up. Encouraging the heart is a huge part of the five
As you can see, LeBron demonstrates all five of the leadership practices and continues
to make an impact both on and off the court. If you are an athlete, I would suggest looking up
to LeBron due to all the positives things he has turned from nothing. The quote provided above
demonstrates what it takes to leave your legacy on the world when you are gone.
