Tutorial 6

The document contains examples and solutions for chi-square tests. It includes: 1) A test of whether the proportion of people catching the flu is the same across three groups: vaccinated, placebo, and unvaccinated. 2) A test of whether car color affects the likelihood of an accident across three colors: red, blue, and white. 3) A test of whether the texture and color of limestone samples are associated. 4) A test of whether machine breakdowns and shift are independent using data on breakdowns across three machines and shifts. 5) A chi-square test using output to determine missing values and evaluate independence between production specifications and shift using count data

CHAPTER 6
CHI SQUARE TEST

1. A researcher wishes to test the effectiveness of a flu vaccination. 150 people

are vaccinated, 180 people are vaccinated with a placebo, and 100 people are
not vaccinated. The number in each group who later caught the flu was
recorded. The results are shown below.
Vaccinated placebo control
Caught the flu 8 19 21
Did not catch the 142 161 79
flu

Use a 5% significance level to test the claim that the proportion of the people catching
the flu is the same in all three groups.
Solution::

1. Use the sample data below to test whether car color affects the likelihood of being in an
accident. Use a significance level of 0.01.

3. A geologist collects hand-specimen sized pieces of limestone from a particular area. A

qualitative assessment of both texture and color is made with the following results. Is there
evidence of association between color and texture for these lime stones? Explain your
answer.

4. A company operates three machines in three shifts each day. From production records, the
data on the number of breakdowns are collected and given below:

1 41 20 12
2 31 11 9

Test the hypothesis that machine breakdowns and shift are independent using 5 %
significant level.
Solution::

5. The following MINITAB output was obtained from a company which manufactures special
plastic containers which are to hold a specified volume of hazardous material. On each of
the three 8 hour shifts workers are able to make 500 of the containers. Some containers do
not meet specifications as required by the company’s customer because they are too small,
others because they are too large.
