TMH 7 Moving Loads

This document discusses defining moving loads in Midas Civil based on the TMH7 code. It covers introducing the different vehicle types (NA, NB, NC) and load cases in TMH7. It then explains how to define the moving loads in Midas Civil, including setting the moving load code, adding traffic line lanes for NA and NC vehicle loads, and using the moving load optimization for NB vehicle loads. Key steps shown include selecting the moving load code, adding lane data, and configuration options for load distribution and optimization.

I. Introduction to TMH7

Vehicles considered

1. NA Vehicle

• Nominal Distributed Lane Load

𝟏𝟖𝟎
- follows a specific function as +𝟔
𝐋

( L is length to be loaded )

- It is incremented in accordance with user

preference

• Nominal Axel Load or Knife Edge Load

𝟏𝟒𝟒
- follows a specific function as, Nominal axel load per notional lane =
𝐧

- Placed at most critical positions for the elements which is being checked

Webinar

I. Introduction to TMH7

Vehicles considered

1. NB Vehicle

- Only one vehicle is possible per

carriageway way as per standards

- The axel spacing may vary which

cause worst effect, i.e. At the
central part which may 6m, 11m,
16m, 21m and 26m.

- NB24 and NB36 are available

X = 6m, 11m, 16m, 21m, 26m

I. Introduction to TMH7

Vehicles considered

1. NC Vehicle

- a, b, c are the values in accordance with the standards

- The blue portion is the loaded area having intensity of 30kN/m2

- User can also consider the relieving effect with respect to the AVR which is ignored in NA and NB vehicles

a = 5m, 10m, 15m, 20m b = 4m, 4m, 5m c = 0m, 5m, 10m, 15m, 20m, 25m

Load Cases considered

1. All lanes NA load

2. Single lane NB load Single Carriage way

3. Single lane NC load

4. Single NC + remaining with NA load ( Dual Carriage way )

5. User defined moving load case

Moving Load Optimization

1. Regular optimization

2. Multi – Point optimization

Existing vehicle locations ( the middle ) Additional vehicle locations considered ( extreme left, extreme right )

7
TMH7 in Midas Civil

Webinar

I. Introduction to TMH7

Moving Load Optimization

1. Regular optimization

- Three positions for vehicle placements ( at Centre, extreme left and extreme right of the lane )

- For NA and NC type vehicles , transverse placement is not have much significant effect,

- As per carriageway width, these three positions are sufficient to cause the worst effect

2. Multi – Point optimization

- For NB type vehicle , when single vehicle is placed on carriageway and which is placed anywhere in
the transverse direction, then the regular optimization is not sufficient

- Then the optimization width will be the entire carriageway width leaving side margins from crash
barriers as per standards

1. Go to Traffic Line Lanes 2

2. Go to Traffic Line Lanes option

Note : For NA and NC type of vehicles

traffic line lanes option is used,
Whereas for NB type of vehicle
moving load optimization option is
used.

2. Traffic Line Lanes

3

1. Go to Traffic Line Lanes 2

2. Go to Traffic Line Lanes option

3. Input the following data as per the vehicle position
Lane name > NA 1
Lane Width > 3m
Total width of girder is 10m, excluding the distance of 0.5m for crash barrier at
both edges the total carriageway width is 9m, considering 3 lanes for NA type of
vehicles the single lane width will be 3m each.
Eccentricity > It is reference to reference points, i.e. with respect to centre.
Wheel spacing > NA vehicle has width of 1.9m, so width is equal to vehicle width
/3 m
It corresponds to the influence line generating points
In midas we will consider 4 locations or 4 lines for generating the influence points
Moving Lane Optimization > Three positions has to be checked for vehicle
placement

41

Define the lane for NC Loading.

It has to run along the centerline of the
carriageway at a offset of 1m on either sides.
If we are considering 5m as a width of vehicle,
the lane width has to be 5+1+1 = 7m
1. Input the following data as per the NC
vehicle position
Lane name > NC
Lane Width > 7m
Eccentricity > 0m
Wheel spacing > 5/3m (we are considering
5m wide vehicle )
Check on > Traffic Lane Optimization

carriageway.
2. Click on > Add

3. Input the following data as per the NB vehicle position
Lane name > NB
Optimization Lane > 9m
Lane Width > 3m
Anal. Lane Offset > considered as 3m will be shifted by
1m each in transverse direction to check the worst
positioning
Wheel spacing > 1m

directly considering the combinations.
- The increment or change in load value by length
of 2m and each element is having length of 1m.
- The program considers 4 influence lines points
for traffic lane definitions. i.e. 4 locations are
loaded by a udl of 9kN/m which brings to 36kN/m
for 1 NA vehicle.
- The results showing the NA vehicle position for
getting maximum moment at center.
