Foshay Learning Center

Course: Algebra 1
Instructor: Mrs. Diaz
Year: 2013-2014

Course Description:

This is a first year algebra course in which you will learn to reason symbolically. The key content
involves writing, solving, and graphing linear and quadratic equations, including systems of two linear
equations in two unknowns. Quadratic equations are solved by factoring, completing the square,
graphically, or by application of the quadratic formula. The course also includes study of monomial and
polynomial expressions, inequalities, exponents, functions, rational expressions, ratio, and proportion.
Algebraic skills are applied in a wide variety of problem-solving situations.

Textbook/ Materials
1. Glencoe McGraw Hill California Algebra 1
2. Math Journal (composition book), pencils, ruler, sharpener, erasers, line paper, graph paper

COURSE LEARNING GOALS:

We believe strongly in the MYP GOALS for mathematics students:

The GOALS for MYP mathematics are to enable students to:
1. develop a positive attitude toward the continued learning of mathematics
2. appreciate the usefulness, power and beauty of mathematics, and recognize its
relationship with other disciplines and with everyday life
3. appreciate the international dimensions of mathematics and its varied cultural and
historical perspectives
4. gain knowledge and develop understanding of mathematical concepts
5. develop mathematical skills and apply them
6. develop the ability to communicate mathematics with appropriate symbols and language
7. develop the ability to reflect upon and evaluate the significance of their work and the
work of others
8. develop patience and persistence when solving problems
9. develop and apply information and communication technology skills in the study of
mathematics.

COURSE ACADEMIC GOALS:

In this course, you will know and be able to:

1. Interpret the meaning of variables and variable expressions
2. Solve linear equations (including proportions) in one variable
3. Apply the concept of absolute value to simple equations
4. Graph a linear function by plotting points, using intercepts, and using the slope and
y- intercept
5. Sketch the region defined by a linear inequality
6. Derive the equation of a line when given a variety of parameters for that line
7. Solve inequalities in one variable (including those with absolute value)
8. Solve systems of linear equations by graphing, using substitution, and using elimination
9. Solve systems of linear inequalities by graphing
10. Solve quadratic equations by graphing, finding square roots, using the quadratic
formula, and factoring
11. Simplify and perform arithmetic operations on and with rational expressions
12. Solve rational equations
13. Solve application problems using the above techniques
ASSESSMENTS will include: Grading Scale
1. Teacher designed standards-based
quizzes and tests A= 90-100%
2. Projects and group tasks B=80-89%
3. Teacher designed formative C=70-79%
assessments D=60-69%
