“A quiet place”
Lewis Price
The first scene of “A quiet place”, all micro elements (cinematography, mice en scene,
sound, editing) are used to create meaning and understanding to audience.
At the exposition of “a quiet place”, text is displayed saying “day 89” creating an enigma
code “what happened 89 days ago?” while also creating an apocalyptic theme. The use of
the text, not only hooks the audience into the narrative but, creates mystery and tension
and keeps the audience watching to get the answer(s).We are also set up with several
establishing shots varying from close ups of traffic lights to extreme long shots of roads, not
only does this show the viewers the surroundings of the characters but it also highlights how
it lacks civilization, emphasizing the apocalyptic theme and creating mystery. Also, it creates
an enigma code “where is everyone?” this creates tension to the audience as what made
everyone disappear is not yet specified, resulting in the audience watching more of the film
to get the answer. We can also see rusted cars and abandoned shops, symbolizing
abandonment and possibly a previous chaotic moment, creating an enigma code “what
happened?” which builds tension to the audience as the cause of this is unknown, making
the audience invest more time into the story to find out what happened. The camera then
focuses on a “missing persons” board, the posters are yellow in colour suggesting some time
has passed since they have been maintained, again emphasizing the apocalyptic theme and
the lack of civilization, therefore this creates an eerie and mysterious atmosphere. The
quantity of missing people posters emphasizes that something chaotic has happened and
creates the enigma code “why are they missing?” which by itself slightly answers the
previous enigma code “where is everyone?”, building on the eerie atmosphere to the
audience.
We are then set up with multiple establishing shots inside the store, creating an action code
that the main characters (protagonists) are going to be in the store. The low-key lighting
highlights the dusty items and appliances in the store, emphasizing the lack of maintenance
of the items signifying that the store hasn’t been professionally used in a long time. Then
the next establishing shot is focused on the dirty floor of the shop, which is quickly
interrupted by rushing footsteps, which is the first time we make a contact with a person,
this is a quite a scare to the audience for a moment as we believe the kid is by himself
without anyone, this panic emphasizes the apocalyptic nature of the world and how not
everyone has survived. We are then introduced to the boy’s sister, the girl is wearing a
white hearing aid which signifies she has trouble hearing, which is complimented by the
white noise while the camera is focused on her, which emphasizes that to the audience. This
creates relief as we know the boy we seen before isn’t alone. We are now introduced to the
mother and another older son, the camera changes from having a shallow focus on the
medical bottle to having a deep focus on the mother and son, this emphasizes the
importance of the medical bottle to the mother and more importantly to the son. The use
of the high angle on the son suggests to the audience that the son is significantly weak,
which is accurate via mice en scene, the older boy is wearing a woolen hat to signify the
character Is too physically weak to withstand the outside world so is supported by warm
clothing, the character is also wearing subtle pale make up to emphasize how ill he is to the
audience and how desperately he needs the medication, creating a sense of urgency. The
mother while looking through the medicine is being very cautious while handling the
bottles, trying to be quiet, which creates the enigma code “why is she being quiet?” making
the audience invest more time into the narrative of the story to find the answer. The use of
the text helps to build understanding between the characters as we know what they are
saying and helps the audience to be in e.g. “he’s okay” .
