This book based on an interview with Filep Jacob Samuel Karma or known as Filep
Karma, who has been imprisoned in Class II A prison in Abepura, Jayapura. He was accused of
betraying the symbol of Republic Indonesia when he raised the Morning Star flag in 2004. This
book consists of six main questions asked by the interviewer to Filep Karma, starting from Filep
Karma's childhood in Wamena and Jayapura, events in Biak, Filep Karma's views on how the
concept of nationalism in Papua should be, Filep Karma's criticism of the struggle steps carried
out by other groups in West Papua and picture evidence during Filep Karma's incarceration in
jail until he reaped solidarity actions for Karma, both national and international.
We can learn about the comparison of social and cultural attitudes between Indonesia and
foreign countries towards minority races. Filep Karma told about how he was treated equally
during his studies in Manila and was discriminated against in his own country. The book is
mandatory for those who want to learn how to fight without violence, how a humanitarian fighter
fights for humanity, not individuals or groups.
His family is respected in Papua. They are from a village in the north of Biak Island. His
father, Andreas Karma, was among the most popular regent in Papua. Andreas is a Vice-Regent
of Jayapura from 1968 to 1971. Then he was the Regent of Wamena in the 1970s and Serui in
the 1980s. In 1979, Filep Karma after graduating from high school in Jaya Pura, studied political
science at Sebelas Maret University, Solo, Java Island. He graduated in 1987 and worked as a
civil servant in Jayapura. She is married to Ratu Karel Lina, a Malay-Javanese woman, born in
1960, from Tanjung Pinang, Riau Islands. They have two children, Audryne and Andrefina, now
they are a dentist and a pharmacist.
At that time, many societies in Papua wanted the New York Agreement is implemented
with one man one vote. But Indonesia considers that this manner is not suitable for Papua.
Papuans are still considered backward, not ready for a referendum, Indonesia wants to use the
conference system. Filep friend's mother preferring one man one vote was accused of supporting
Papuan Independence. He was arrested by the military, jailed and interrogated. His story added
to Karma’s understanding of the rejection of the New York Agreement by Indonesia. In 1969,
finally, only 1.025 people were chosen by Indonesia to 100 percent support integration with
Indonesia. They were threatened and forced to choose Indonesia. This is in principle contrary to
the New York Agreement. Those who wanted the referendum were arrested by the army.
Filep Karma attended school at the Asian Institute of Management, Manila, Philippines.
As a black race, it is valued here, not discriminated like in Indonesia. After this, he wants to fight
for his rights and all Papuans peacefully, not having to enter the forest, not having to be armed,
but with ideology. inspired by people power in the Philippines in 1986 which made President
Ferdinand Marcos run. He also learned from Jakarta in 1998. Also, the patterns taught and
practiced by Mahatma Gandhidi India. Martin Luther King Jr. in the United States, Nelson
Mandela in South Africa and Aung San Suu Kyi in Burma. While in Indonesia, he does not feel
tolerance. There were 9 Papuan students and 33 non-Papuan students in one class. Non-Papuan
children's education is preferred.
In 1998, when President Soeharto stepped down, B.J. Habibie rose from vice president to
president. He was a tumultuous period in Jakarta and various places in Indonesia. A series of
Papuan pro-independence actions emerged in Jayapura, Sorong, Wamena, Biak, and Manokwari
between July and October 1998. Dozens of activists were arrested and jailed.
The following month, 100 Papuan delegates came to Habibie with the leadership of
Theys Eluay, they also asked to be allowed to make a referendum in Papua. Habibie refused and
promised special autonomy to Papua. Habibie rejects dialogue about governance in Papua. He
was a dark year throughout Indonesia. Filep Karma, who was born in Biak, planned a peaceful
protest in Biak in July 1998. Demonstrators raised the Morning Star at the Biak Water Tower.
Human Rights Watch reported that a police sergeant entered the demonstrators. He was
considered to be a provocation. He was beaten and several teeth were broken. This creates a
clash. He made Indonesian soldiers fire on demonstrators. Many societies were reportedly loaded
into trucks and allegedly dumped into the sea from two Navy ships. Karma suspected that many
bodies were buried improperly on small islands near Biak. The number of dead victims is still
unclear. Karma and his two younger brothers, Constan and Sari, were arrested and sentenced to
prison.
Overall, this book is recommended because it can increase tolerance among people.
Racial, ethnic, religious and linguistic differences are natural and of high value in diversity. This
book is highly recommended for activists especially from students who want to fight for rights
by peaceful means.
If we shout or speak out for democratic justice, freedom of speech, and we are in a
position to carry out activities that are of a state nature or for the benefit of many people, we
must defend democratic values. We should not demand the injustice that Indonesia did, but we as
subjects or perpetrators also do or repeat the same actions. Means we are not consistent. If we
demand to be treated fairly, we must also tolerate to others.

hope, the rays of good news for those who are feeling depressed inside, insistently suffering and
getting thicker clouds of melancholy. This book consists of a unique chapter name that is gold
(saba'ik), necklace ('uqud), emerald (far'a'id), gems (juman) and so on. It contains pearls of
wisdom advice and selected traditions.
when hope comes true, that is the best hope. If it doesn't come true, we can still
live happily with hope. Enjoy your sadness because nothing lasts forever. your sadness won't last
forever either. We can never change the past and paint the future according to our wishes.
Meanwhile, if you want to reach the peak of glory, don't be satisfied with anything under the
stars.
Broad-minded people will never be shackled by things that are felt torture by those
who are narrow-minded. he realized that he was part of this vast universe. so that he also realized
that he would get a ration of disease, calamity, sadness, and also joy. Therefore he was never
surprised and agitated with anything that happened to him. They can understand the character of
others, are sensitive to change, can position themselves well in the presence of others and can
read the actual or hidden situation.
There are several stories of wisdom in this paper, such as the story of the prophet,
friends and other selected stories. Dr. Aidh made it an angler then continued with motivation,
aphorisms and enlightenment. He invites people especially women to thank God every time. He
gave many suggestions to make the reader be a happiest people.
A friend can influence the character and character of his friend. If the friend is a person
whose face is radiant, his soul is calm and optimistic in life, then this good trait can be
transmitted to his friend. If he is a person who has a sour face, hard face and shamelessness,
pessimistic in the face of life, always agitated, always inferior, then those qualities can cause the
growth of anxiety in the hearts of his friends. Friendship is not only limited to fellow human
beings. There are some things that can also befriend such as books, magazines, television
programs, and radio broadcasts. Like humans, some things that exude pessimism. Some also
exhale optimism. Some can cause anxiety and some can bring us peace.
Repenting is washing your heart with tears and embers of regret. That is to say,
repentance must be accompanied by burning of lust, the regret of instincts and tears. That is the
basic principle of the teachings of the seekers of Allah, the basic car of those who want salvation,
the first step of those who want an encounter with Allah and the key to resting on the hearts of
those whose hearts cannot be moved to other than Allah.
Many people struggle desperately in their youth and healthy masses to accumulate wealth
and then use the rest of their lives to spend it to get happiness, but instead suffer miser. Then
they want to return young, but old age has already picked them up. After that, they craved health
but the disease came in repeatedly.
Anxiety will not come during your busy time, but precisely when you are unemployed
and have no activity. Because at that time your imagination will come attacking with a variety of
frightening possibilities. However, there is a powerful antidote for getting rid of that delusion by
keeping yourself busy with your work.
The worst effect of anxiety is the confusion of concentration. That is when we are
agitated our minds will be fragmented. But if we prepare ourselves to face even the worst
consequences it means that we have accustomed ourselves to always concentrate on dealing with
every problem.
