Q1) What is your opinion on Sean’s approach to WBS and estimating project costs? Please elaborate
Sean should first ask for a garage builder’s opinion. His assumption that the three car garages take
50% more than two car garages has no strong basis. He should have first consulted an expert or at
least a person that has know-how in this field. The cost estimate was a very lay man's approach. The
estimated cost was first upscaled, considering the customization, and was later reduced, considering
the competitor's price. In his approach, Sean was not very clear, and this would hurt the firm. A
more appropriate approach in this case would be that of estimation after discussion with co-
employees, vendors and designers. A more appropriate approach in this case would be that of
estimation after discussion with co-employees, vendors and designers.
a. Adherence to the plan – conformance to the initial plan of a week without any deviation &
slippages
b. Risks in plan implementation – aspects involving damage of equipment, delays due to
external aspects
c. Considering all aspects – other aspects of transportation, plan schedule & activity costing
deviance accommodation
d. Costing for the shifting process – quotation received could be skewed as it is received from
single vendor
Q. 1 Discuss Walter's approach to a] defining work (creating task lists). b] creating the schedule
and c) assigning responsibility
Answer: Initially, Walter used an approach where he created the task lists to be performed on t
he basis of his review of the SOW project and requirements, and later he sought the availability
of the most qualified and experienced candidates who could work on his project.
Sequencing of tasks is also done after the allocation that could be done initially. Also giving the
task of estimating time for each task if given to the team would result in underestimating or
overestimating time. Objective work and time study measurement could be a much better basis
for scheduling. Initially, he assigns the task according to the expertise, but in order to manage
the time constraint and scheduling, he decides to assign the task equally among the 3 candidates.
Q. 2: What do you think of Walter's approach to "balancing the workload" among the tea
members?
Answer:
Walter’s approach to balancing the workload would work if the three members of the team were
equally qualified, which is clearly not the case. The 4 tasks that he assigned to non-specialized
persons in this field would have an impact on the quality of the project.
Q. 3: Do you think the Gantt chart will realistically reflect work that must be done in the project?
Answer:
Gantt charts are an easy way to schedule tasks and track the progress of your project against
your deadline, in short it is a project planning tool that shows the beginning and finish dates of
individual tasks through horizontal bar graphs. A simple Gantt chart can be done using a
spreadsheet, but for rather complex projects with many tasks it is better to use a project
management software.
The advantages of using a Gantt chart is that it helps you monitor the progress of your project and
to set priorities. The project manager and the team members can easily see what needs to be
done at what time and if there are any delays the chart can easily be altered to balance it. This is
important to remember a Gantt chart is not carved in stone. The one problem with them is
that they don't indicate task dependencies - you cannot tell how one task falling behind schedule
affects other tasks.
Here, too, the Gantt chart does not represent task dependencies. A WBS and then a PERT chart c
ould be a better way to schedule and reflect the work done in the project.
Q .4: Do you think the project will be able to satisfy the SOW and requirements? How else
might Walter have gone about defining work tasks, creating the schedule and assigning
responsibility.
Answer:
A better approach would be to initially define tasks based on WBS. Define work specificities and
time scheduling based on objective assessment–work and time study, project tasks based on
project time and sequence–Gantt chart, PERT chart can be used here. Allocate tasks based on
expertise and then, if required, hire external persons or select members from other teams for
additional specialized tasks.
