APPLICATION

1. Here are quotes from philosophers:

a. “Science is what you know, philosophy is what you don’t know.”

-Bertrand Russell

b. “If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far
as possible, all things.”

-Rene Descartes

What do these quotes tell you about the nature of Philosophy and the way of thinking of a philosopher?

The nature of Philosophy is about seeking for the truth and that means questioning everything and
understanding them. For the quote “Science is what you know, philosophy is what you don’t know.” By
Bertrand Russell this means that we, people knew the science or origin of something but we do not really
understand it because of not applying or embracing it in real life. And for the quote “If you would be a
real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all
things.” by Rene Descartes, you must not believe everything that you see, you must further investigate or
at least assess yourself whether to believe it or not. Philosophy doesn’t just stop in being able to know the
truth but also understanding and being with the truth always. Nonetheless, you must empty your mind so
that you can understand the world even more and appreciate the beauty of everything.

2. How does this quote relate to the title of this chapter (Philosophy by doing it)?

“This is patently absurd; but whoever wishes to become a philosopher must learn not to be frightened by
absurdities.” –Bertrand Russell

A philosopher is someone who is a real seeker of the truth so he/she must not be afraid to be judged by
other people like for being annoying for them sometimes because of questioning everything. To become a
philosopher, you must know how philosophy things are being done and by doing it you will be able to
understand the nature of philosophy. Being a philosopher would be sometimes a hard time because there
are times that they would be misunderstood by others, there will be countless or non-stop judgement from
others. Those things or absurdities are just part of understanding philosophy so you just need to face them
by hearing and forgetting them later on and to make use of those things to be more eager to learn and
understand Philosophy.
3. Explain the negative and positive of the word ‘pilosopo’.

In the Philippines, the term ‘pilosopo’ means ‘pabida’ or ‘kulang sa pansin’ and they are being
misunderstood by others because of the way how they express or states their knowledge about particular
things and also because they are always after the truth which makes others annoyed sometimes. The
negative aspect of the term ‘pilosopo’ depends upon the culture of a particular place but nonetheless we
must respect each other and their beliefs. And for the positive side of the term ‘pilosopo’, he/she
questions because of genuine confusion, wonder, to learn something new that would have something to
do in understanding the true meaning of life.
