Leadership and Power

Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective

and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent (Clark, 2004)

while power, according to Max Weber, is the ability to control others, events, or resources; to

make happen what one wants to happen in spite of obstacles, resistance, or opposition

(Crossman, 2018).

Good leadership helps to maximize efficiency and to achieve organizational goals

(Juneja, n.d.) and different articles would tell what traits a good leader must possess. Kimberly

Fries (2018) wrote the “8 Essential Qualities The Define Great Leadership” are as follows: 1)

Sincere enthusiasm; 2) Integrity; 3) Great communication skills; 4) Loyalty; 5) Decisiveness; 6)

Managerial competence; 7) Empowerment; and 8) Charisma.

Leadership Quiz

The results of the 18-question leadership quiz by Mind Tools tells me that I am on my

way to becoming a good leader. However, at a score of 72, there are areas where I didn’t score

maximum points and need to be improved. There are three areas where I received five stars (9 to

10 out of 10): Emotional Intelligence, Motivating People to Deliver the Vision, and Being a

Good Role Model. The results tell me that I have the ability to understand other people, knows

how to motivate them, and how to work cooperatively with them (Akers & Porter, n.d.). The

result also shows that I can motivate people to work towards the achievement of set goals and by

leading by example, I can get others to get involved in the work.

Meanwhile, in the areas of Self-Confidence, Positive Attitude and Outlook, Providing a

Compelling Vision of the Future, and Providing Support and Stimulation, the results show four

stars (8 out of 10 and 15 out of 20). These results tell me that my confidence still needs

improvement through the use life experiences and achievements. My positive attitude and

outlook could still be improved, develop a strong sense of balance, and recognize problems that

occurs. At the same time, as a leader, I need to learn to develop my team’s skills and make them

feel my support and appreciation towards their efforts at work.

However, Managing Performance Effectively questions yielded only 3 stars (5 out of 10)

and is not unexpected at all. In my entire career, I worked under the supervision of other people

and only in the last two years I have given the chance to lead a team. In the course of doing so,

there have so many struggles that I had to endure which ultimately affected the performance of

my duty. Even though I succeeded in the end and was able to finally make the group work as a

“team”, the experience is not quite enough.

The final result of the quiz is excellent and I agree to the interpretations despite scoring

low at some areas which need improvement. After careful evaluation of the results, I learned that

I excel in understanding others while I lack in self-confidence and positive outlook. With the use

of the various articles, self-check quizzes, and other resources recommended in the results

section, I could definitely improve my leadership abilities.

Conclusion

Various researches define what leadership is and what makes a good leader. In reality,

every leader is different from one another and their leadership styles depend on the needs of the

organization he or she is involved with.
