Lab sessions that accompany this course use a preconfigured virtual machine
Warning:
environment. If you start or modify VMs in any way prior to use in lab exercises,
exercise tasks and steps will not work as intended. DO NOT start or modify any VM until
instructed to do so in the lab exercises.
Preconfigured VMs use lab environment scripts to complete certain steps at first launch
based on the computer name entered in mini-setup. Failure to enter computer names
specified in the lab exercises exactly as shown will incorrectly configure VMs, which will
cause lab exercise tasks and steps to fail. 1

Review
1. What are the three requirements for multicasting?
Routers that support multicast, at least one install image (that you want to transmit) on
the server, and the boot.wim from the Windows Server 2008 media.
Scenario
This scenario is where a customer would setup a WDS Transport server in a environment
where they do not have active directory. They want to multicast images (or any type of
file). This is similar to an ADS server but without the ability to run sequences or control
the client after setup. In this exercise, you will use the previously installed WDS server; in
a production environment, you would install Windows Server 2008 and only choose the
Transport Server option when adding the WDS role.
When setting up this type of configuration, you can’t PXE boot unless you write your own
PXE provider, because WDS Transport server contains the listener but not the provider. If
you don’t write your own PXE provider, you can boot up using other methods such as CD-
ROM, which is the method we will use for this exercise.
Tasks
1. Create a WDS Multicast Transmission using the WDSUTIL:
b. To start the multicast using WDSUTIL, open a command prompt window and
enter the following command:
a. On the Virtual Server Master Status page, in the left pane under Virtual
Machines, point to Configure and select Student-2008-D3.
b. On the Student-2008-D3 Status page, under Status, open the context menu
for the virtual machine and select Turn off.

Important:
c. When prompted regarding loss of unsaved data in the virtual machine, click
OK.
d. Mount the CD that contains the PXE Provider in the DVD Drive:
b. As the BIOS starts loading, when prompted press any key to boot from CD
or DVD.
c. Once you are at the WINPE 2.1 command prompt, enter the following
commands to repartition and format the C: Drive:
diskpart
sel disk 0
clean
create part primary size=10000
sel part 1
assign letter=f
format FS=NTFS quick
The actual file transfer will be very quick even though it is a 2 GB file.
Note: For the purpose of this exercise, the file being transferred is not important. The
intention is to show how you can multicast any file to the client.
d. To verify that the file transfer worked, verify that F:\res.rwm exists.

Write permissions using iCACLs?
The Delete and Write permissions appear as Special permissions on the Security tab for

5. Why did we receive an error when attempting to restore the backed up permissions
using iCACls the first time?
Since we used iCACLs to backup the permissions for all the drivers in the
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers directory, we are attempting to restore the backed up
permissions for each of the drivers. Since we do not have ownership of the 1394bus.sys
driver which is processed prior to the acpi.sys driver, we receive an access denied error
message.
There are several different ways to resolve this. One option would be to take ownership
of the acpi.sys file and then backup the permissions for only the file. Another option
would be to use the /c parameter on the restore which would allow us to continue with
the operation on error.
