A Detailed Lesson Plan

The document provides a detailed lesson plan on teaching algebra students about discriminants of quadratic equations. The objectives are for students to distinguish solution types, apply discriminants in daily life, and complete a worksheet. Example problems are worked through step-by-step to determine the nature of solutions based on calculating the discriminant. Students are engaged through a picture puzzle game to motivate learning before the key concepts and examples are presented.

A DETAILED LESSON PLAN

ALGEBRA

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the student is expected to:
a. distinguish the type of solution of a quadratic equation;
b. apply the concept of the discriminant in daily living;
c. appreciate the lesson by giving seatwork activity.

know the one of the famous
educational game today it’s
called “4 pics 1 word”. I’ll
give you three sets of
pictures. The group who can
guess what the pictures means
and got a highest score
receive a gift. Just clap your
hands three times to recognize
that you want to guess/answer
the puzzle. If a group has a
wrong answer the other group
is given a chance to answer
the puzzle. You are only given
one chance to answer. Okay
class?

In a count of three you may

C. Presentation of the Lesson

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

Our lesson for this morning

is all about Discriminant. In
our past lesson we tackled
about the quadratic formula
and it stated as x is equals
to negative b plus and minus
square root of b squared
minus 4ac divided by 2a

−b ± √ b2 −4 ac
( x=
2a ). The

quadratic formula makes it

easy to determine the nature
of the roots of a quadratic
equation even without
completely solving the
equation. The number
2
b −4 ac which appears under
the radical sign in the
quadratic formula is called
discriminant. By calculating
the discriminant before
solving the quadratic All: If a, b, and c are

perfect square, the solution
4) 2 x 2−5 x +1=0
in this quadratic equation is
two different irrational
equations.

Vareen: a −16 a+57=0 .
Following the process on how
to solve the discriminant our
a=1,b=−16∧c=57 .
Substitute the values in the
discriminant
b2−4 ac =(−16)2−4 (1 )( 57 ) =256−228=28

square the solution of this
equation are two different
irrational equations.

Liezel: 6 a2 +17 a−14=0 . The

same process
a=6, b=17,∧c=−14. Then
substitute the values in the
discriminant
b2−4 ac =(17)2−4 ( 6 ) (−14 )=289+ 336=625

. Since this is a perfect

square the solution in this
equation is Two different
rational numbers.

Rowena: 2 x 2−5 x +1=0 . In

this equation our
a=2,b=−5, c=1 . Substitute
these values in the
discriminant
b2−4 ac =(−5 )2 −4 ( 2 ) ( 1 )=25+ 8=17.

Since that 17 is not a

perfect square our solution
in this equation is two
different irrational numbers.
Very Good class! Give
yourself a round of applause. All: Clap! Clap! Clap!
