Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B.

Part A is compulsory which carries 10 marks. Answer all questions in part A
Part B consists of 5 Questions from 2.5 Units. Answer any 3 out 5 questions. Each question
carries 5 marks.

.SET-A
PART-A (10 Marks) 5X2=10

1. Define the Grashof number and explain its significance.

2. What is hydraulic diameter. When it is used?
3. Explain Buckingham’s – П method of dimensional analysis.
4. Define Eckert number?

6. Air at 30 C flows over a 6m long and 1m wide heated plate at 1.2m/s for a surface
temperature of 900C. Determine i) Hydrodynamic boundary layer thickness ii) Thermal
boundary layer thickness iii) Average skin friction coefficient iv) Local heat transfer
coefficient v)Average heat transfer coefficient vi) Heat transfer rate.
7. A flat plate 1m wide and 1.5m long is to be maintained at 900C in air when free stream
temperature is 100C. Determine the velocity at which air must flow over the plate so that the
rate of energy dissipation from the plate is 3.75kw.
8. A metal plate 1.5m long and 0.7m wide forms the vertical wall of a oven. The temperature
of the plate is at 800C whereas the air outside the oven is at 200C. Assuming the oven is not
insulated. Calculate the convection heat loss from the wall to the outside air.
9. Why is an analytical solution of a free convection heat transfer problem more difficult than
that of a forced convection problem?
10. Air flow through a long rectangular duct (30cmX20cm) used in air conditioning maintains
the outer duct surface temperature at 50C. If the duct is installed vertically in a room at 250C,
find the heat gain by the duct.

PART-A (10 Marks) 5X2=10
1. Define Rayleigh number?
2. What is viscous heating?
3. Explain the expression for Blausius similarity solution.
4. Define Schmidt number?
5. Define Characteristic length of a horizontal plates?
PART-B (15 Marks)

6. Water flows through a long 2,2cm diameter copper tube in an average velocity of 2m per
second. The tube wall is maintained at a constant wall temperature of 900C where as the water
gets heated up from 150C to 600C while passing through the tubes. Find the average heat transfer
coefficient and also heart transfer rate.
7. A 30cm long glass plate is hung vertically in the air at 270C while its temperature is
maintained at 770C. Calculate the boundary layer thickness at the trailing edge of the plate. If the
similar plate is placed in a wind tunnel and air is blown over it at a velocity of 4m/s, Estimate the
i) boundary layer thickness at the trailing edge ii) average heat transfer coefficient for natural and
forced convection.
8. A metal plate of 0.609m high forms the vertical wall of an oven and is at a temperature of
1610C. Within the oven is air at a temperature of 93.00C and one atmosphere. Assuming the
natural convection conditions hold near the plate, Estimate the mean heat transfer coefficient and
the rate of heat transfer per unit width of the plate.
9. Using dimensional analysis establish a relation between Nusselt, Prandtl and Reynolds
numbers.
10. Calculate the average coefficient of heat transfer for natural convection for a vertical plate
30.48cm high at 51.670C. The surrounding air is at 23.90C. Also calculate the boundary layer
thickness at the trailing edge.
