BTEC Media Proposal

HOOK What must you consider before you film?

1. What mark did you
get for this? What must you be aware of?

Why do you think you What could go wrong?

got this mark?
Why must you allow yourself more time than you may need?

When would you meet your client? How many times?

Who must you seek permission from before filming? Who else?

What specific equipment might you want/need for your idea?

Where will you get props/costumes from? How will you keep it cost
friendly?

CHALLENGE: 1. What laws would you need to avoid breaching?

2. How does this fit with regulators?
BTEC Media Proposal
Hook
Line What is a proposal?
Proposal= a formal plan

A plan for a project

This implies that you are in depth saying what/how you will achieve your
video.

This is worth 20 marks.

The expectation is that you spent 1.30- 2 hrs on this.

(Should spend more time on this than the Rationale and the Pitch).

CHALLENGE: 1. What would you consider before filming?

BTEC Media Proposal
Hook
Line What must I do?

• Go into detail about how you will do your production (do not describe- the
more specific you are the better)

• Legal considerations, planning scheduling and technical considerations

were the weakest part. Legal and ethical are the weakest parts.

• Cover all sections evenly

• Realistic timetable- shows understanding of the production process

• Consider how you will deal with constraints (things that restrict you e.g.
budget, risks, scheduling etc.)

CHALLENGE: 1. What legal and ethnical laws can you remember?.

These are
the best
ways for you
to boost your
grade-
considering
back up
plans
BTEC Media Proposal
Hook
Line How is it marked? How realistic is it and
how well does it show
understanding of what
would happen in a real
commission? (time
frames, extra time to
allow for set backs etc.)

Idea fully targets the

audience

Clear ideas
communicated
through media
language

Links to the
commission
and idea
throughout

How it is made is carefully thought

through including the consideration of
set backs
Another form of structuring your response:

There is no right/wrong way as long as you are

fully covering everything.
BTEC Media Proposal
Hook
Line How must I structure my proposal?
1. Content Overview
What is your chosen commission? How will it benefit the audience? What is the goal?

Your idea in more detail than pitch- what will the video look like? And why it is done? (how does it fit with what was
asked, the company values and/or the audience). MUST USE FLUENT KEY TERMS- SHOTS/ANGLES/MOVEMENTS, MISE
EN SCENE, EDITING AND SOUND
2. Technical Considerations and Budget- see slide 6
How long should it take to film & why? (how long the video is asked). Where will it be filmed? Why? How many days will
you need to film and edit? How will you give yourself more time in case you need additional days to film/edit? Why is
this important?

How much is the budget? Why & how will the equipment be used?
- Camera- what specific one?, tripod, radio microphones, boom mic, Steadicam, OSMO, 3 point lighting studio lights,
computer, editing software? – FOR EACH SAY WHY THAT CHOICE.
Challenge: use a few on the next slide mind map

3. Legal and Ethical Considerations (see slides 8-21)

Which law will you avoid breaching? How does this fit with your idea? E.g “there’s no music because…” – you should
have at least x2 here.
4. Risk Assessment – just need to explain
What risks may occur?
Choose x2 or more:
Tripping? Why? How will you avoid this?
Weather? Why? How will you avoid this?
Computer malfunction? Why? How will you avoid this?
Breakage of equipment? Why? How will you avoid this?
?
?

?
BTEC Media Proposal
Hook
Line How must I structure my proposal?
5. Production Schedule
Optional to draw a table- depends on your time.
How many weeks will it be and what will you be doing during each week?

What will happen in the first week? What are the pros of this?

Things to consider:
By second week you would have wrote your pitch and met with the client.

Week 3/4:

Actor agreements, location scouting and clearances

When will you edit and how long would this take?

When will you receive feedback from the client? (give yourself time for changes/adaptations)

In total how long should it take you and why?

LEGAL & ETHICAL LAWS
Obscene Publications Act
TASK – DISCUSS WHAT THE OBSCENE PUBLICATIONS ACT MIGHT
COVER?
The Obscene Publications Act (1959) applies to television and covers
material which is obscene, whether it is in a person’s possession or it is
published or broadcast.

The definition of obscene is ‘likely to deprave or corrupt’ the audience for

which it is intended and includes not only sexually explicit material but
material relating to violence and drug taking.
Copyright & Intellectual Property Law
Intellectual property rights are the legally recognized exclusive rights to
creations of the mind. Under intellectual property law, owners are granted
certain exclusive rights to a variety of intangible assets, such as musical,
literary, and artistic works; discoveries and inventions; and words, phrases,
symbols, and designs. Common types of intellectual property rights include
copyright, trademarks, patents, industrial design rights, trade dress, and in
some jurisdictions trade secrets.

The way to stop people ripping you off is get your idea patented and

Libel law
• English law allows actions for libel to be brought in the High Court for
any published statements which are alleged to defame a named or
identifiable individual or individuals.

• A defamatory statement is presumed to be false, unless the defendant

can prove its truth.

DEFAMATION: The action of damaging the good reputation of

someone; slander or libel.
KIERA KNIGHTLEY

• The Daily Mail published accusations that Knightley had an eating

disorder and had been responsible for the death of a young lady with
anorexia.
QUESTION: IS IT DEFAMATION? WHY?
• The actress went to court and was awarded several thousand dollars
which she handed over to a charity.
Race relations act 1976
The Race Relations Act 1976 was established by the Parliament of the United
Kingdom to prevent discrimination on the grounds of race. Items that are covered
include:
• Discrimination of race
• Colour/Nationality

without permission.
Regulates Adverts- ASA
• The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is the UK’s
independent regulator of advertising across all media.
Make sure that all
advertisements are
appropriate for all
audiences.

Can you find an

example that was
blocked by ASA?
Regulates TV & Radio- Ofcom
The UK’s broadcast regulator.
“We regulate the TV, radio and video-on-demand sectors,
fixed-line telecoms, mobiles and postal services, plus the
airwaves over which wireless devices operate.”
Ofcom is funded by fees from industry for regulating
broadcasting and communications networks, and grant-
in-aid from the Government.- Funded by TV License
(£145.50 per year)
Uses the watershed to support the viewers making sure
content is appropriate and best fits viewers’ interests.
How might this be appropriate for narrative music videos?
Can you think/find an example?
What will you need to do in order for Ofcom to accept your narrative music
video?
BTEC Media Proposal
Thinker

What is your weakest area? Why might this be?

How will you meet all requirements on the mark

scheme?

How will you ensure that you will get this

completed by the end of Thursday’s lesson?
