QUESTION:
Write up not exceeding 500 words on what you understood of the need of a human being
to communicate from the film CAST AWAY?

ANSWER:
The movie Cast Away (Director : Robert Zemeckis) tells the story of a FedEx employee
Chuck Noland, played by actor Tom Hanks, who survived a crash landing and struggled to
survive alone in a deserted island for four years before being rescued and returned to
civilization. This movie depicted several concepts and theories regarding the need of a
human being to communicate.
As a human being the protagonist initially satisfies his basic needs i.e. food, clothing &
shelter. But he also needed to satisfy his psychological needs so that he didn’t go mad.
Communication is one of the prime forms to satisfy psychological needs of a person. As
Chuck Noland didn’t have any one to speak to on the deserted island, he found a volleyball
on which a drew a face and named it Wilson and thought the ball to be his friend and
started socializing with it which satisfied his need for belonging.
Self-Esteem Needs is a human need to value and respect themselves and get respect from
others. Since Chuck Noland had no one to speak to in the island, he did find respect by
bragging about his success of starting a fire after many failed attempts.
Self-Actualization Needs is the most abstract human need according to Maslow. To achieve
this need it requires for someone to realize that they have completely mastered a talent
and cultivate potentials. Chuck Noland to some extent did reach this human need. Initially
he had trouble catching fish, making fires and cutting coconuts but after a few years he had
completely mastered his foresting and hunting skills.
Here we can also see different forms of nonlistening forms of communication like pseudo
listening, monopolizing, selective listening etc. Pesudolistening is exemplified in a scene at
his apartment after he got rescued where all his friends gathered to celebrate. He appeared
to be attentive, but he was really in a daze. Monopolizing is a form of nonlistening when
someone tries to focus the conversation on themselves instead of listening on what
another person has to say which is exemplified in a scene where his ex-wife’s husband said
she was not ready to talk to Tom Hanks yet because a lot was going and she had to clear
her thoughts but he failed to ask Tom Hanks how he felt after the rescue and how he felt
about the situation about his wife. Selective listening is portrayed in the part where Tom
Hanks being a workaholic got on the plane on Christmas Eve and failed to listen to his wife’s
request to stay home with her instead.
Different forms of non-verbal communication like kinesics & haptics can also be seen in the
movie. In the scene where Tom Hanks hurt his leg with the coral reef he was limping for a
while in the film, this showed the audience the amount of pain he was in which is an
example of Kinesics. Haptics has been exemplified in the scene where Tom Hanks kissed his
ex-wife and their body language showed that they were very much in love with each other.

Interpersonal communication includes Linear, Interactive &Transactional models. Linear

model is shown where in a delusive state Chuck is talking to the volleyball, but the
volleyball is not really responding to what he is saying. Interactive model is shown in the
dialogue between Chuck and his wife before he got on the plane where Chuck said he had
to go, and his wife replied if he could be back by New Year’s Eve. Here we also see
Transactional model but in an opposite way. Chuck and his wife were very intimate at the
beginning of the film, but after his four-year disappearance, the way they communicated
was more limited; they were not expressing their true feelings.

Communication is the most important thing to establish a relationship in life. Many times,
we fail to see why a relationship is going poorly and it is probably due to poor
communication. People communicate poorly because they are not aware of the different
concepts and skills that can help to communicate effectively. It only takes good listening
skills and empathy to understand other people’s perspectives and words. These skills are
very necessary in our daily life to be successful in both personal and professional life.
