OF URBAN
LANDSCAPE
A Report
Urban Landscapes are defined as the combination of environmental and human phenomena that
coexist together in a particular place on Earth's surface. Urban areas are some of the most striking
examples of human-environment landscapes.1 Urban literally means ‘of the city’ – and so when
speaking of urban landscapes, we are speaking of the different components and factors that come
together to create that city.
Every city has had an identity over time, and today they are remembered and living with the
identities they have created. The identity of a city has its own characteristics with many factors.2
Urban Design involves the design and coordination of all that makes up cities and towns:
1. Buildings
2. Public Spaces
3. Streets
4. Transport
5. Landscape3
Urban design
weaves together
these elements into a
coherent, organized
design structure.
The map of Lahore
to the right shows
how the landscape
and the building area
work together.

The connections that the roads maintain in an urban landscape have a huge impact on the kind of
landscape that the city will ultimately produce. There are green areas which are public parks or
green belts, there are communities and there are commercial areas. They are all interconnected and
they form the landscape of the city in whatever way gives the inhabitants ease of utilization.
Another feature that
dominates a lot of
urban landscapes is
their accessibility to
water sources.
Major cities have
been built around
rivers and while
designing and
working with urban
landscapes they
prove to play an
important role in what goes where.6 Fig. Map of London5
Even in the 21st century, geography plays an important role in the overall urban environment. If
the city lies in a mountainous region, the people will organize their community and way of living
to match that of the original landscape. Similarly, people have settled and grown around these
major rivers, from the Ravi in Lahore to the Thames in London.
Landscapes must be designed and preserved according to the population of the city. They promote
a healthier environment and a happier lifestyle. The more green spaces a city has, the cleaner it
will be. Urban design includes people merging their lifestyle with that of the area, to make sure
the area does not suffer at the hands of human made settlements and issues like industrialization,
the city needs to have allotted areas for landscaping – parks, playgrounds, local trees and flowers,
etc. They not only make sure the environment stays clean but also helps other life forms to continue
existing.7
Landscape includes designing according
to the energy requirements of the area
which is why there have been theories
and projects where the landscape has
been used to make buildings more
energy efficient. For example, this
project developed by Mette Kirk8 that sustainably works with the landscape. Fig. Landscaping
Unsustainable patterns of transport and urban land use are a driver, or root
cause, of a number of significant, and interrelated environment and health hazards faced by urban
dwellers in developing countries7

Hardscapes and public spaces should be integrated with green spaces, and planned appropriately
keeping the people in mind. The people of the area determine the conscious and subconscious
identity of the urban settlement and their culture is what shapes the area into the kind of city that
it turns into. Natural landscapes have been dramatically transformed by the urbanization process
throughout the world.9
