Code: MU6ME– IIa-4
Competency: the orchestra
Key Concepts/Understandings to Most authors today, grouped musical instruments into four families, namely :
be Developed:
1. Stringed Family – instruments which have four strings which are played by means of a
bow. They can also be played by plucking, called pizzicato. These
section includes violin, viola, violoncello ( or cello ) and double bass or
contrabass.
2. Woodwind Family – it consist of four different families, namely, flute and piccolo, oboe
and English horn, Clarinet and Bass Clarinet, and Bassoon and
contrabassoon. Saxophones although made of metal, are also
classified as woodwind instruments for they have the same manner
of playing and mechanism as the other instruments of the section.
The tone of the woodwind instruments is produced by a column of
air vibrating within a pipe that has little holes in the sides. When
these holes are open or closed, the length of the vibrating column
of air in the pipe is changed.
3. Brass Family – it consist of the trumpet, cornet, trombone, horn and tuba or sousaphone.
The section can be utilized in playing melodies, sustaining harmony,
rhythmic accent for massed tone and sonority that contributes to the
climax of the music. These instruments have cup –shaped like a funnel.
The tone is produced by the stretched lips of the player, called
embouchure, which means the method of applying the lips and tongue
to the mouthpiece of a wind instrument. This demands great muscular
control.
4. Percussion Family – it is divided into two : a) percussion with definite pitch; and
percussion without definite pitch. Percussion instruments are made
to sound by striking or shaking. Some are made of metal, some are
made of wood. To percuss means “ to strike “, so that all instruments
whose manner playing is either by striking, plucking or strumming,
directly or indirectly. Percussion without definite pitch are
drums ( bass, tenor and snare drums ), cymbals, triangles, gong,
tambourine and castanets. While percussion instruments with definite
pitch are marimba, xylophone, celesta, vibraphone and chimes. The
pianoforte and the harp are also include in the percussion
instruments with pitch.
5. Keyboard Instruments – although the piano, celesta, harpsichord and organ have
keyboard where the players play with their fingers, they can
belong to either stringed, percussion or wind. No other group of
instrument make such complete music as the keyboard because
all the fingers and thumb can each play the note, a keyboard
instrument can produce a vast range of music like massive
chords, rapid runs of notes, a tune with an accompaniment or
several melodies at once. Keyboard instruments include the
piano, harpsichord, organ and synthesizer. They all have the
same arrangement of keys, so keyboard player can switch from
one another quiet easily.
