Projek Sains & Maths (Proposal)

This document outlines a student project to measure height using a clinometer. A team of 6 students from SMJK Chung Ling Butterworth will build a clinometer and use it to measure the height of an object over 4 meters tall from 5 meter distances. They will record the elevation angle and use trigonometry to calculate the height. The project aims to apply problem solving strategies and mathematical communication skills while promoting effective learning. The conclusion is that the project provided experience using trigonometry concepts in daily life through cooperation and patience. Appreciation is given to teachers and the school for supporting the project.

Objective
The aims of carrying out this project work is :
 To study and analysis the relation between angle of elevation and
the height of the object
 To apply and adapt a variety of problem-solving strategies to solve
problem.
 To improve thinking skill
 To promote effective mathematical communication
 To provide learning environment that stimulates and enhances
effective learning.
 To develop positive attitude towards mathematics
 To identify method used to calculate the height of an object
Uses of Clinometers
 Determining latitude using Polaris (in the Northern Hemisphere) or the two
stars of the constellation Crux (in the Southern Hemisphere).
 Determining the angle of the Earth's magnetic field with respect to the
horizontal plane.
 Surveying, to measure an angle of inclination or elevation.
 Measuring angles of elevation, slope, or incline, e.g. of an embankment.
 Measuring slight differences in slopes, particularly for geophysics. Such
inclinometers are, for instance, used for monitoring volcanoes, or for
measuring the depth and rate of landslide movement.
 Measuring movements in walls or the ground in civil engineering projects.
 Measuring the height of a building, tree, or other feature
using a vertical angle and a distance (determined by taping or
pacing), using trigonometry
Procedure
1. Build a clinometer
2 .Choose an object with the height not less than 4 metres.
3 .Make a point on the ground level which is 5 metres from the foot of
an object. Record the distance as d.
4 .Ask a student to stand at the point marked while holding the
clinometer at his eye level. Record the height of the eye from the ground
as t. Adjust the clinometer until the top of the object can be seen through
the straw.
5 .Another student read and record the angle of the elevation, θ. Repeat
the steps for four different values of d.
6. Construct a model of triangle to find the height of tree.
Conclusion
We have learn to measure a high object without using a
professional measuring tools. We also learn to use the concept
of trigonometry in daily life. We have a lot of experience when
caring out the project and learn that cooperation and patience is
needed to complete a object. We have also improved our
Additional Mathematics knowledge after completing the project.
Appreciation
We sincerely thanks each other that we have overcome
many ups and downs to complete this project. We would
also like to give a big credit to our three teacher advisor
that helped us every time we meet a wall. We would also
like to thanks the school authority for giving us this
chance to do the project together and supplying apparatus
for us.
