M11GM I A 4

This lesson plan aims to teach students about functions through solving real-life problems. The lesson begins with a review of Polya's problem-solving method and presenting sample problems involving functions. Students will then solve similar problems independently and in groups with teacher guidance. Finally, they are assigned a homework problem to solve on their own applying what they have learned about writing function rules and using functions to model real-world situations. The overall goal is for students to accurately construct and use function models to solve a variety of problems involving rates and costs.

LESSON PLAN IN GRADE 11 GENERAL MATHEMATICS

Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of functions.

Performance Standard: The learner is able to accurately construct models to represent real-life
situations using functions.
I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students must be able to solve problems involving functions.
Code: M11GM-Ia-4
II. Subject Matter:
A. Session Title/ Topic: Problems Involving Functions
B. Instructional Materials: Chalk, Board
C. References: Orines (2016). Next Century Mathematics General Mathematics. Pp. 48-
54.
III. Procedure
1. Review
-Review the Polya’s Method in solving problems.
Steps: 1. Explore/Understand the problem carefully. (Guided question: How can we say
that we understand a given problem?)
2. Plan the solution.
3. Solve.
4. Check the solution.
(Guided question: Which step do you think is the most important step in problem solving?)
2. Presentation (I Do It)
-Present objectives.
Problem 1. Cesar charges 25.00 for every page of encoding work. In addition, he charges 8.00
per page of printed output. Write a function that will provide the amount for encoded pages and
printed work. How much will Cesar charge for 33-page encoding printing work?
3. Guided Practice (We Do It)
-Solve (By row)
Problem 2. A proposed train fare would charge 20.00 for the first 5 km of travel and 0.75 for
each additional kilometers over the proposed fare.
a) Find the fare function f(x) where x represents the number of kilometers traveled.
b) Find the proposed fare for a distance of 45 km.
Solution: 1. Understand the problem carefully.
2. Plan the solution.
Let x be the number of kilometers traveled over 5 kilometers
f(x)=20, if 0<x≤5
f(x)=20+0.75x
3. Solve the problem.
If x=45km,
f(45)=20+0.75(40)=20+30=50
4. Check the solution.
f(45)=50 or “The proposed fare for a distance of 45 km is 50.00.”
4. Group Practice (They Do It)
-Solve (By Pair)
Problem 3. A mall charges 25.00 for the first hour or a fraction of an hour as parking fee. An
additional 25.00 will be charged for every additional hour, or a fraction of an hour of parking.
a. Write a function rule for the problem.
b. How much will be charged a car owner who parked his or her car from 7 am to 1:30 pm?
25, 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≤ 1ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟
Answer: a) 𝑓(𝑥) = { .
25 + 25𝑥, 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 > 1 𝑘𝑚
b) 𝑓(6) = 25 + 25(6) = 25 + 150 = 175.

5. Independent Practice (You Do It)

Evaluation (1/2 sheet of papaer)
1. In General Santos City, a tricycle driver ask 8 pesos fare if the distance is less than 4
km and a rate of 2.5 pesos per km if the distance will be greater than or equal to 4
km. Write a function rule that will describe the problem. How much will be your fare
if you travel 11 km?
6. Assignment
Solve the problem below in ½ sheet of paper.
An airport taxi operator estimates taht250 passengers are transported from NAIA to Manila
Hotel. He charges a flat rate of 300.00. Moreover, he estimates that for every 25.00 increase in
his rate, he will lose 15 passengers. Write a function rule that describes the operator’s income
after increasing his rate.
