DD15 and DD16 Axial Power Turbine Gear Box

15.1 Description and Operation of DD15 and DD16 Axial


Power Turbine Gear Box and Related Parts
The gear box is located on the right side of the engine between the Axial Power Turbine (APT) and cylinder block.

15.2 Removal of the DD15 and DD16 Axial Power Turbine


Gear Box
Remove as follows:
1. Remove the turbocharger. Refer to section "Removal of the DD15 and the DD16 Turbocharger"
2. Remove the Axial Power Turbine (APT). Refer to section "Removal of the DD15 and DD16 Axial Power Turbine"
3. Remove the oil line from cylinder block to APT gear box.

NOTICE
If the APT gearbox shaft is loose, ensure none of the ball bearings have fallen into the
gear train. If the bearings are missing, remove the oil pan to locate all the bearings and
inspect for damage.

4. Remove four bolts from the APT gear box to the cylinder block and remove the APT gear box.

15.3 Inspection of the DD15 and DD16 Axial Power Turbine


Gear Box
Inspect as follows:
1. Inspect the gear box for damage; replace if necessary.

15.4 Installation of the DD15 and DD16 Axial Power


Turbine Gear Box
Install as follows:

NOTICE
Ensure gear box gear and idler gear located in gear case housing are meshed. Failure to
mesh gears correctly will cause damage.

1. Add a light coat of clean engine oil to O-ring seals on the Axial Power Turbine Gear (1) and the Oil Drain
(2).

2. Install Axial Power Turbine (APT) gear box to cylinder block, ensuring gears are meshed together when
installed.

NOTICE
Ensure correct bolt length is used when gear box is installed. If incorrect bolt length (too
long) is used, cup plugs installed in the cylinder block can be pushed out into gear train
causing severe damage to the gear train.

3. Install four bolts into gear box and cylinder block and hand tighten.
3.a Bolts (1) have 120mm long threads.
3.b Bolt (2) has 35mm long threads.
3.c Bolt (3) has 90mm long threads.

4. Torque the four bolts to 55-60 N·m (41-44 lb·ft).


5. Install oil line to gear box and engine block. Torque to 35 N·m (26 lb·ft).
