ƒ Vertical communication
ƒ Client / Server

ƒ Horizontal communication
ƒ Real time communication
between IEDs
ƒ GOOSE (Generic Object

GOOSE Data Exchange
Event

Tmin Tmax

ƒ In case of a event, the GOOSE dataset is repeated within Tmin,

repetition frequency is lowered until Tmax is reached
ƒ GOOSE dataset is repeated with Tmax without any changes until next
event change
ƒ Communication link between the IEDs is supervised by sending
data cyclically
ƒ In case of a timeout the application and the user are notified

GOOSE Performance
ƒ GOOSE speed requirements
from IED to IED as defined by
the standard
ƒ Type 1 (fast messages)
ƒ Type 1A (tripping)
ƒ Class P2/3: <3 ms
(transmission)
ƒ Class P1: <10 ms
(distribution)
ƒ Type 1B (others)
ƒ Class P2/3: <20 ms
ƒ Class P1: <100 ms

ƒ Following the IEC 61850

standard means that peer-to-
peer signalling is faster than
traditional hard-wiring
ƒ Reduced wiring and faster
response times

Conventional Approach
Signal wiring between
the bays ƒ Wiring between IEDs must
be done individually per
signal
ƒ Output signal can be
shared, but inputs have to
be individually used

GOOSE Approach – Added value for customer

Ethernet, IEC 61850-8-1

ƒ Number of links for N IEDs is N

ƒ IEDs share common network
ƒ Interbay signals can be shared easily between bays without
additional physical wiring

Signals and Application for GOOSE
2-out-of-3 interlocking
ƒ Interlocking of commands
ƒ 1-out-of-N
ƒ only one primary switch at

Advantages of GOOSE

ƒ Simplicity
ƒ All IEDs are connected via single connection to the LAN
ƒ Higher level of standardization
ƒ Reduction of wiring between IEDs

ƒ Flexibility
ƒ Possibility of Data sharing across all IEDs
ƒ Simple or complex schemes are possible with no increasing
wiring costs
ƒ e.g. late on-site signal logic addition without installing wires and
having spare IO channels from IEDs

ƒ Programming is independent of wiring

© ABB Group

IEC 61850 Standard
Advantages of GOOSE

ƒ Performance and Capacity

ƒ Transfer of signals between IEDs can be less then 10 ms
ƒ Higher number of virtual inputs and outputs
ƒ Reliability
ƒ Automatically supervised connections
ƒ Link status known before use
ƒ Status exchanged continuously
ƒ Can be monitored with any IEC 61850 client
ƒ Preconfigured fail-safe value in case of failure

ƒ Scalability
ƒ Switchgears, SCADA, …

ƒ Equipment migration

IEC 61850 Standard
Advantages of GOOSE

ƒ Time reduction
ƒ Engineering (bottom-up approach), erection, startup,
maintenance
ƒ Up to date technology, long term validity => right
investments
ƒ Cost savings
ƒ Reduction of wiring between IEDs
ƒ Hardwired signal paths are replaced by a LAN network.

ƒ Lower costs to engineer and commission the substation

system
ƒ Lower cost to use
ƒ Fast logic changes without increasing wiring

Disadvantages of GOOSE

ƒ Higher technical knowledge of staff

ƒ New solution
ƒ Not accepted in every market
