Equipment For

Non Destructive Testing

ULTRAVIOLET LAMPS

The Chemetall range of UV lights are designed

for use with fluorescent dye penetrant and
fluorescent magnetic particle inspection
processes.

The standard CFL 100F Lamp is available as a hand

lamp or with an adjustable arm attachment for bench
use. This lamp provides a UV intensity of between
3,500 and 5,000 µwatts / sq.cm. (at 380mm) and is
dual voltage for 110V or 240V mains supplies.

CFL 100F Hand Lamp

If a high intensity illumination lamp is required, then

the EFL 400 Flood Lamp can be supplied, which is
also dual voltage for 110V and 240V operation. This
fan cooled inspection lamp will provide 8,000 µwatts /
sq.cm. (at 380mm).

For portability the lighter and more compact lamp,

the EFL 35 Watt Lamp comes as a mains or battery
operated unit and provides an output in excess of
10,000 µwatts / sq.cm. It has a DUV gas discharge
lamp giving almost immediate hot strike so provides
full output straight away on switch-on. This fan
cooled inspection lamp will provide 8,000 µwatts /
EFL 35 Watt Mains Operated Lamp sq.cm. (at 380mm).

ULTRAVIOLET AND WHITE LIGHT METERS

Measurement of UV and visible light intensity is

an important aspect of control in the inspection
process for fluorescent dye and magnetic particle
inspection.

Chemetall can supply combined meters such as the

Elyscan 2 or the DSE 100X for measuring both UV
and visible light. Instruments specifically for white
light include the DL3 Visible Light Meter. For UV
light the DM 365 Digital Meter or the J221
Analogue Meter are also available.

Elyscan 2 Visible / UV Meter

Many of the instruments are designed for portable

use in a range of applications from general purpose
laboratories to aerospace and offshore use.
Chemetall can advise on the instruments best suited
to the individual application. A re-calibration service
for all light meters can be provided on request.

PERMANENT AND ELECTROMAGNETS

The Elymag 1 is a permanent yoke magnet for

magnetising ferrous items that are to be tested by
magnetic particle inspection. It is ideal for use where
electromagnets are impractical or even prohibited on
safety grounds. The Elymag 1 has rotating pole
pieces on the end of hinged arms to facilitate easy
local inspection of a wide range of items.

The CEY Adjustable Yoke Electromagnet is also

designed for magnetisation of parts during magnetic
particle inspection. Versions of this unit are available
for 240V, 110V or 48V supplies.

Accessories available for these units include an

Induction Light, which attaches to the legs of the
electromagnet to enable indications to be visible in
conditions of poor lighting, and test weights
(18 kg and 4.5 kg) that can be used to check the
serviceability of both permanent and electromagnets.

MAGNETIC PARTICLE INSPECTION – FUNCTION TEST EQUIPMENT

Non-destructive testing is critical to many

manufacturing, maintenance and overhaul processes.
Such testing is crucial to provide confidence in the
operation of aircraft, oil exploration equipment,
pressure vessels and so much of the machinery and
infrastructure that we come into contact with every
day. But how can we be sure that the testing process
itself is efficient and effective?

Chemetall can supply various items of equipment,

which are designed to assist an operator to conduct
the testing process according to the requirements laid
down and to ensure that the test equipment and
materials are working properly. This includes a range ASME Indicator
of test equipment used to test for the presence and
direction of induced magnetic fields.
I Indicator Strips which can be used to indicate the
presence of a magnetic field
I The ASME Indicator is used to show the direction
of the field
I The Berthold Pentrameter for determining the
magnetising efficiency
I Flux and Field Strength Meters can also be
supplied where quantitative measurements of these
parameters are needed.
I Various Test Pieces are available to test the
integrity of the process

Also available for material testing are:

I Settling Tubes to test the working strength of
magnetic inks
I Powder Dispensers for Ferromor dry powder
products to apply the magnetic particles evenly to
Settling Tubes the work-piece.
PENETRANT INSPECTION ACCESSORIES

The standard range of equipment covers units for

application and illumination plus safety equipment.
Application equipment includes Portable Foam
Generators (20 and 50 litre units are standard),
a Tricon Water Wash Gun and a SG 17 Air-Water
Spray Gun.

SG17 Air-Water Spray Gun

The wash booth can be illuminated with the

Overhead Wash Booth Light, which includes a 4 ft
twin fluorescent tube light unit in which the tubes
are individually wired and fused to enable both white
and UV lights to be incorporated in a single light
unit. The unit includes one UV and one white tube.

To provide operators with protection from UV

UV Protection Goggles radiation, UV Protection Goggles can be supplied.

PENETRANT INSPECTION - FUNCTION TEST EQUIPMENT

It is essential to ensure that the penetrant inspection

process itself is operating correctly and to
specification where appropriate. To this end
Chemetall can supply a wide array of test pieces to
check the process function, Refractomers for testing
the concentration of hydrophilic emulsifiers for
penetrant removal and Transparent Comparators
for assessing the importance of indications given by
fluorescent dye penetrants.

Refractometer

Test pieces include Aluminium Thermal Quench

Blocks where the face is divided by a machined
groove to provide side by side comparative crack
patterns, TAM Inspection Panels and Ni-Cr Test
Pieces in pairs with either 10µm, 20µm, 30µm or
50µm thickness of plating.

RINSE WATER TREATMENT EQUIPMENT

Chemetall can advise on and supply a range of equipment for the treatment of penetrant rinse water prior to
discharge to drain.
CHEMETALL EQUIPMENT FOR
NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING
For your penetrant and magnetic particle inspection requirements
you need look no further than Chemetall. In addition to the
NDT products supplied under our well-established brand names
such as Ardrox®, Checkmor®, Lumor® and Supramor®, we can
also supply a wide range of equipment. This comprises instruments
used in the inspection process such as lamps and magnets, test
pieces and other function test equipment as well as water
treatment plant to maintain clean rinse water and for the
minimisation of effluent discharge.
