This document discusses the dangers of being a lukewarm Christian. It notes that Jesus will vomit lukewarm believers out of his mouth because their deeds show they are not truly spiritually alive, but only nominally Christian. It defines lukewarm believers as those who attend church but are not transformed, and lists characteristics like not sacrificing for God, not sharing their faith, and prioritizing earthly life over heaven. The document encourages self-examination to evaluate one's own commitment to Jesus and whether one's relationship with God has changed their life, or if they are merely lukewarm.

NO SUCH THING AS A LUKEWARM DISCIPLE
“So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.” (Rev. 3:16)
I. THE DESTINY OF A LUKEWARM CHURCHGOER (Rev. 3:15-17)
A. Christ knows everyone’s deeds. (Rev. 3:15) B. Deeds always reveal people’s true spiritual state. (Matt. 7:16; Rom. 2:6-8; Jam. 2:14, 17) The “hot” are those who are spiritually alive and live a transformed life. (Rom. 12:1-2) The “cold” are those who reject Jesus Christ. (Luke 10:16; John 3:36) The “lukewarm” are those who attend church and claim to know the Lord, but they are skin-deep nominal Christians. (Matt. 7:21-23; 2 Tim. 3:5) C. Such churchgoers make Jesus sick. (Rev. 3:16) D. Such people have a disastrously inaccurate self-assessment of their faith. (Rev. 3:17a) E. Such people are not saved since “wretched, miserable, poor, blind and naked” are not words Christ would use to describe children of God. (Rev. 3:17b)
II. CHARACTERISTICS OF A LUKEWARM CHURCHGOER (Ref. “Crazy Love” by Francis Chan)
A. Lukewarm people attend church fairly regularly. (Isa. 29:13) B. Lukewarm people give, but they do not give sacrificially. (1 Chron. 21:24; Luke 21:1-4) C. Lukewarm people are man-pleasers rather than God-pleasers. (Gal. 1:10) D. Lukewarm people don’t really want to be saved from their sin; they only want to be saved from the penalty of their sin. (Rom. 6:1-2) E. Lukewarm people consider the commands of Christ to His disciples to be applicable only to extreme, radical believers. (Jam. 1:22) F. Lukewarm people never share their faith with neighbors, coworkers, or friends. (Matt. 10:32- 33) G. Lukewarm people gauge their own goodness by comparing themselves to the secular world. (Luke 18:11) H. Lukewarm people say they love Jesus, but He isn’t allowed to control their lives. (Luke 9:57- 62; John 14:15) I. Lukewarm people say they love God, but they don’t love Him with all their heart, soul and mind. (Matt. 22:37-38) J. Lukewarm people love others, but not as much as they love themselves. (Matt. 5:43-47; Luke 14:12-14) K. Lukewarm people will serve God and others, but there are limits on how much they are willing to do. (Luke 18:21-25) L. Lukewarm people set their minds on life on earth rather than on eternal life in heaven. (Phil. 3:18-20; Col. 3:2) M. Lukewarm people do the bare minimum to keep themselves from feeling guilty. N. Lukewarm people focus on playing it safe and keep from sacrificing and risking for God. (1 Tim. 6:17-18; Matt. 10:28) O. Lukewarm people feel secure because they attend church, made a profession of faith, and were baptized. (Matt. 7:21) P. Lukewarm people do not live by faith, they live dependent on their own abilities. (Luke 12:16- 21) Q. Lukewarm people aren’t much different than the typical unbeliever. (Matt. 23:25-28)
III. EXAMINE YOURSELF TO SEE WHETHER YOU ARE A LUKEWARM CHURCHGOER
A. We all have some of the behaviors described above, but as you examine your life, has your relationship with God actually changed the way you live since you made a profession of faith? B. We need to understand what Jesus requires of us if we are going to be His disciples. He wants us to be willing to forsake all to follow Him. (Luke 14:33) A lukewarm, uncommitted, halfhearted disciple is useless to Jesus. (Luke 14:34-35a) He/she is not even fit for the manure pile and will be thrown out. (Luke 14:35b) C. Examine yourself. How would you define your commitment to Jesus Christ? (2 Cor. 13:5) Would you call yourself a disciple of Jesus Christ? Or are you lukewarm? A disciple of Jesus Christ will obey Him, carry on His ministry, and become like Him in the process. (Luke 6:40)
