Introduction
Flans are originally Roman origin. Leche flan, on the other hand, is of Latin
and Spanish origin. In Portugal, Spain, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Latin America, this
sweet dessert has always been a favorite. It, later on, has evolved to become other
best tasting wonderful desserts like the creè me brulee, and the mouth- watering
dulce de leche.
Leche Flan is creamy custard with caramelized sugar top. The Filipino leche
flan recipe uses both evaporated and condensed canned milks aside from the usual
ingredient of eggs, sugar and vanilla. The dessert Flan, also known as Caramel
Creè me, is of Spanish origin. It is quite popular in South and Central America and
done just like our Flan. Traditionally, a llanera, which is an oval shaped aluminum
tin pan, is used. The custard is flavored with vanilla extract or lime/lemon zest, and
then cooked in a steamer on the stove top or in a bain-marie inside the oven.
Caramelized sugar or arnibal is first made at the bottom of the pan before pouring
in the custard mixture. This process gives the custard the caramelized top because
it is flipped like an upside down cake when served. However, it is the tocino del
cielo, another version of the leche flan, where the egg whites are included, that were
taught by the nuns here in the Philippines during Spanish times. As they regard it as
a waste of food by not including the whites, they decided to incorporate it in the
making of the flan as well. In the European continent, however, the nuns give the
egg whites to wine producers where they use them to clarify Sherries and red
wines. The nuns sell these delicacies to be able to maintain the cost of expenses in
their convents.
For this brand perception that we formalize we would like to linger the
interest of the buyers and also the consumers with our version of Flavored Leche
Flans. “Make it your Flans” introduce varieties of flavors that consumers would not
normally taste with the following flavors that we would like to propose which are
Matcha, Mango, Dulce de Keso, Tiramisu, Oreo’s & Caramel, Ube, and Chocolate.
