Being Moral
Being Moral
As a person, I always thought that I should always act according to what the moral standards require of
me – that I should always be truthful and unselfish, to be humble and kind, to be always good, although
I don’t always ought to be one, because I thought that it’s what makes me human. It’s what
distinguishes me from animals and other beings. And simply because I should act morally, as a practicing
Muslimah, towards the nature, as a social being, and as an individual.
Then, I realized that even without those reasons, I would still think that I should always be moral
because in the first place, why not? I mean, why not be truthful and unselfish? Why not be humble and
kind? Why not be good? Remember, nothing bad really comes from being good. Let me rephrase that,
nothing bad comes from being moral. Because being moral doesn’t only mean being good or right. It is
not limited to being able to sacrifice your self interest for the greater good. It goes beyond that- beyond
being right. Because being moral? It’s being humane; it's being able to sympathize/empathize with the
burdened; it's being kind even in the most unkind circumstance. And it is so much more that no words
can best explain it.
Some may argue that there are bad things that come out from being good. Like in the case of an
abused goodness, wherein some people are treated lowly, bullied for being too righteous, abused for
being kind. But, think again, was it really caused by the moral act?
QUESTION #2
As for the question ‘do you think human beings in general should always be right?’, my answer is the
same. I still think that human beings, in general, should always be moral.
As human beings, we classify ourselves as social and logical beings translating to having moral standards.
We have a social hierarchy and order because we follow moral codes set. And somehow, it’s what keeps
order but also causes disarray. And morals are basically the foundation of laws, human rights and such.
And without morals, we, human beings, are no better than the other beings like the animals.
So, imagine a world full of immoral people. Do you see order? Do you feel peace? Will there be justice?
Will there even be laws? What will become of the world? If people are not bound by moral standards,
then how will people restrain from doing something immoral? Are these not enough for us, human
beings, to be moral?
Some people might say that some things call for immoral acts, such as in the case of self defense or even
in an accident. And yes, I understand them. Of course I know that there are circumstances when what is
right is actually, ironically, not the right thing to do or not ‘morally right’. Because sometimes, what is
actually right is that which causes the greater good. But isn’t that what morality is about?
