Specification for Tubular Poles Technical Particulars : STEEL POLES

1. Permanent Set : The permanent set produced at the gripping end shall not
exceed 13 mm.

2. Temporary deflection: The temporary deflection by applying a load at the point

of application shall be not exceeding 157.5 mm.

3. Type of the Poles: All the poles to be supplied by the Manufacturer shall be of
swaged type. As per IS 2713 of 1980 incorporating revision till date. Such
swaged poles shall be made of seamless or M S black pipe continuous welded
tubes of suitable lengths as per IS : 1239 swaged and joined together. No
circumferential joints shall be permitted in the individual tube lengths of poles.

4. Method of Swaging : Swaging may be any mechanical process. The upper edge
of each joint shall be chamfered at an angle of about 45°. The upper edge need
not be chamfered if a circumferential weld is to be deposited underneath.

5. Unless swaging is done by special process such as rotary or longitudinal dia.,

swaging process a circumferential weld shall be by deposited at the upper end
of the joint (See Fig. 1) at a slope of approximately 45°. The circumferential
weld shall be deposited only after poles are subjected to and in conformation to
all the type tests and routine tests requirement as per the latest relevant
standard IS:2713 of 1980.

6. Joints in the Poles : The length of the joints on swaged poles shall be as under :

Outside dia. Of small tube in mm Length of Joint in mm

76.1 200
88.9 230
114.3 300
139.7 350

7. Free from defects : Poles shall be well finished, clean and free from harmful
surface defects, ends of the poles shall be cut square. Poles shall be straight
smooth and cylindrical.

8. Tolerances : (Outside diameter) : The pole shall be as nearly circular as possible

and the outside diameter shall not vary from the appropriate value; except at
the joint or steps, by more than + 1 percent.

Thickness : In the case of welded tubes its thickness shall not fall below the
thickness specified by more than 10 percents.

In the case of seamless tubes, the following tolerances on thickness shall apply.

C:\Documents and Settings\MGVCL\Desktop\Steel Tubular pole\Specification of Steel Tubular Poles.doc -1- 1

(A) Where the ratio of thickness to the outside diameter is more than 3 percent
– 12.5 percent of the specified thickness and
(B) Where the ratio of thickness to the outside diameter is equal to or less than
3 percent 15% of the specified thickness.

9. Weight : The mean weight for bulk supplies shall be within 92.5 percent of its
calculated value. The weight of any single pole shall not fall below the nominal
weights as given in part-2 and part-3 of the standard by more than 10 percent.

Details of Poles : Length Weight

(A) 9.00 Mtrs. 147 Kgs.
(B) 11.00 Mtrs. 194 Kgs.

10. Tolerance of length shall be as follows :

(1) On the length of any section + 40 mm
(2) On the overall length of pole + 25 mm

11. The following tests shall be conducted on finished poles, according to IS:2713
latest revision.
(a) Tensile test and chemical analysis for a sulphur and phosphorous.
(b) Deflection test.
(c) Permanent set test.
(d) Drop test.

12. Protection against Corrosion : All the poles supplied by the manufacturer shall
invariably be coated with bituminous black paint internally and externally upto
the level which goes inside the earth. The remaining portion of the exterior shall
be painted with one coat of red oxide primer as specified in IS : 2074 : 1979.

13. Earthing Arrangement : All the poles shall be provided with a through hole of 14
mm dia or earthing stud of 12 mm dia at a height of 300 mm above the one
sixth of total length of planting depth as directed by Department.

14. The successful bidders will have to prepare and offer a prototype sample and
three Nos. of drawing within 15 days from the date of receipt of order for
carrying out necessary test mentioned in Clause No.11 above of technical
particulars at supplier’s works at the cost of supplier in presence of MGVCL’s
Engineers.

All the papers should be signed by the tenderer and should be submitted
alongwith the Technical Bid.
