11. Scope / Objectives of the project:

 In order to save drinking water, the usage of seawater in concrete

is to be investigated.

 the main objective of this research is to show the possibility of

using seawater with Blast Furnace slag (BFS) or

 Fly Ash (FA) or Chemical Admixture as mixing water in concrete

and the sub objectives, which are related to investigate the effect
of BFS, FA, and seawater on the strength and durability.

 Further objective in this research also includes the possible

replacement of natural sand by sea sand.

 The main objective of this research is to show the possibility of

using seawater.

KSCST : Student Project Programme : 42nd Series : 2018 – 2019 – Stream C : Student Project Proposal 3
12. Methodology:
Two design mixes viz; M20 and M25 using Ordinary Portland
cement to be carried out for the study as per “Concrete mix
proportioning –Guidelines”.

Specimens shall be casted in various combinations like

 OPC + River Sand + Potable Water + Curing in Normal Water

 OPC + River Sand + Potable Water + Curing in Sea Water
 OPC + River Sand + Seawater + Curing in Normal Water
Specimens to be cured for a period of 7, 28 and 90 days before testing
its
Compressive Strength, Split Tensile Strength and Flexural
strength. Standard concrete cubes of 150 X 150 X 150 mm 3 were used
for measuring the compressive strength. Concrete cylinders for
measuring the split tensile

The pull-out test to be carried out by using a high tensile steel bar
with a diameter of 20 mm embedded in the centre of a standard
concrete cube of 150 X 150 X 150 mm3. Similar Specimens shall also be
made for the studying the durability aspects

Note : If this project is an improvised work of the previously awarded

project, then you need to submit the proposal under Stream A.

13. Expected Outcome of the project :

 Due to limited water resources in the World and the escalating

cost of potable water, industries are constantly encouraged and
challenged not only to generate less wastewater, but to recycle,
reuse or reclaim as much as possible.

 An attempt is being made in this research to replace the potable

water with abundant sea water.

 A comprehensive understanding tells us that alternative like sea

sand should be identified to maintain the uninterrupted growth of
infrastructural projects.

 Also the construction officials in coastal areas have long been

facing the challenge of building and maintaining durable concrete
structures in a salt water environment. Gradual penetration of sea
salts and the subsequent formation of expansive and leachable
compounds lead to disintegration of structural concrete.

14.  Application of the project :

1. Industry
2. Health
3. Agriculture
4. Disaster Management
5. Societal
6. Education / Academic
(You may provide details also)

Societal
Due to limited water resources in the World and the escalating cost of
potable water, industries are constantly encouraged and challenged not
only to generate less wastewater, but to recycle, reuse or reclaim as
much as possible. In the construction industry, a substantial amount of
potable water is consumed annually. An attempt is being made in this
