On Food

1) The document discusses different types of "fuels" that the body needs including food, air, and sensory inputs. It argues that food alone plays a small role in development and that yoga practices are more important. 2) It provides guidance on eating, arguing for a simple, frugal diet of one meal per day before 4pm, with no snacking. Drinking should be separate from eating. 3) Specific foods like onion juice, fig paste, almonds and cream of wheat are recommended for their health benefits like supporting the blood, intestines, brain and spinal fluid respectively.

On Food , from Tavariaji’s Writings :

What are the fuels we need to run our system? (a) Normal food, without any fad of being
vegetarian or non-vegetarian, is fuel for the body. It has no part to play beyond this! (b) The second fuel
is air, and (c) the third fuel are the incoming impulses through our five sense organs.
The intensity of fuel #2, air, is a hundred times more powerful than fuel #1, food, and fuel #3,
incoming impulses, is a thousand times more powerful than fuel #2, air – like coal, petrol and nuclear
power. The efficient use of these fuels is neither philosophy nor religion but pure scientific yoga
practices, and this prepares the body/brain system for higher possibilities.
Regarding fuel #1, (a) food, the unnatural ways in which it is taken or not taken at all, i.e., fast, is
the first cause of so much trouble to the system. Do not make food the subject of religion and philosophy
and many problems will be solved straightaway. The fads of vegetarian diet, the fads of fasts, the fads
concerning vegetables that grow underground, the fads connecting food with the phases of the moon, in
the name of religion, all speak of incurable ignorance. Much misunderstanding prevails in the sphere of
food in the name of scriptures and shastras, for instance, advocating vegetarianism, etc., -- they are all
fads, because the energies that matter, those that are useful in psychic and spiritual development, do not
come from food, from any kind of food. Please understand here that to eat meat or vegetarian food does
not qualify as universal truths (yama in yoga).
Then the other extreme in the name of science -- the fads of balanced food, rich vitaminised food
-- is equally the result of incurable ignorance. Do not unnecessarily complicate what is simple. God and
nature have made a human body and brain that can not only survive but remain healthy with yesterday’s
bread or chapati with today’s cup of tea. For how otherwise would/do the poor survive, the poor who
form the bulk of humanity in the whole world, many of whom can ill afford one frugal meal a day. We do
not here include unhygienic conditions of living that play havoc, and not poor food.
What is the way to eat and what to eat? This is most simple. Eat whatever comes your way,
wherever you be, in whatever circumstances – but the more frugal the food, the better the bodily health.
Do not have fixed ideas of any special type of food, about raw or cooked food, hot or cold food served. It
is immaterial what you put inside your body, it is how you put it in that is more important. Remember a
human being is normally a warm-blooded creature, and also a daylight creature that retires at night (not
considering those who have to work at night). Do eat well before sunset. The body is equipped to work
80% during daylight hours for internal digestion and only 20% after sunset. But what do we find today?
Life begins after 4 p.m. and so the main abuse of the body begins.
Secondly, for a day of 24 hours the quantity of food required for an adult over 25 years of age is
24 average morsels of food. This quantity being fairly small can be had in one meal – so it means only
one meal a day, during daylight hours, latest by 4 p.m. by any local time. It is more than enough for
maintenance of the body, if not its growth. Anything more than this is an abuse of food. So after the age
of 25, with firm resolve and calm determination get down to one average simple meal a day taken
between 12 noon and 4 p.m. local time anywhere without any fuss about what is eaten. (So too reduce the
hours of sleep, first between 11 p.m. and 5 am and later between 12 midnight and 4 a.m. Regular
preliminary practices and long hours of 3SRB make you ready for both these steps.)
And when you eat, do not drink also, for eating and drinking do not go together. Eat and drink
separately, half an hour between them. But we drink wine and beer, cold drinks, buttermilk, water, etc.,
anything we can lay our hands on. This is the second main abuse.
And finally, do not brood if you are eating alone and do not bring forth happy conversation if in
company. When eating, the solar plexus center, manipura chakra, is very receptive and one can work on
it. Because one dines 80,000 times in one’s life, not including snacks, it is the best time to remain awake.
Perhaps that is why ancient wisdom required that whilst eating one must observe silence. But eating in
excess only prepares the body/brain system for sleep. Thank God and Nature, smile, be happy whatever
you are eating, and you will be surprised how much your health improves.
We overeat, eat wrongly, eat at wrong times and eat with a wrong mind. These are the abuses
from which we must free our bodies. It is better not to eat at all for in that case we may die but at least die
healthy.
In the body there are 7 principal metals, 22 subsidiary and 14 other metals, and 53 other elements,
all totaling to 96. (There are also 96 emotions, positive and negative, in man.) All these are produced in
the interior of Mother Earth and so also in us. They are produced in the body in varying proportions and
then combined. They are manufactured in the bone marrow and then released into the red corpuscles of
the blood. The 7 principal metals are known as rare for they are easily destroyed and the body does not
produce them again. Fear, anger, irritation and depression are some of the causes for them drying up
gradually. Every burst dries up a certain amount and a few such bursts eventually results in their non-
production. A healthy body keeps their manufacture and flow to the correct amount and up to 75 years of
age they are produced in the right proportion after which they start drying up.
Onion juice is very rich in all these elements, so it is very essential for anyone reaching the age of
40 to drink it first thing in the morning (just 1 tablespoon). When the blood is affected by these metals (in
wrong proportions) the nerves complain and the proper cure for numerous ill-effects and diseases is onion
juice. In the old days, maharajahs and wrestlers took amounts of these minerals orally, but not knowing
the right proportions it gave them virility.

For a magnet to have any effect on the physical body, it must be strong enough to be able to draw
towards it a nail from one side of the room to the other. Failing this, it is better to drink first thing in the
morning water kept overnight in a copper tumbler, as this completes the circuit and charges the water --
this is very beneficial for the entire system.

Everything the human body needs is supplied by nature. Food, essentially, is for toning up and
improving the physical body, eventually affecting the nerves and thereby the astral. Certain foods or
combinations of food affect certain areas of the body.
For example, gehun doodh (cream of wheat) is excellent for the spinal fluid, which degenerates
with age – it helps maintain its constituents and its proper viscosity. All the nerves run through the spinal
column in a special casing and are insulated – they are like the wiring not of a flat but of the whole
building, and so very important.
Fig paste (anjir chutney) is excellent for the intestines. The intestines have a serpentine movement
of their own, which begins to slow down after 40 years and more so between 50-70 years, and this
eventually affects the nerves, the blood system and the whole body. The intestines do work for quite some
time because of their strength and tough structure, but the nerves (attached to them) deteriorate much
quicker. All illnesses start from the intestines – it is the bed of all diseases or ill health. We must look
after it from now on, or else we will be born again with all the bodily and intestinal malfunctioning or
defects. (Seeds of dry figs soaked overnight or at least for a few hours in water must be completely
chewed to prevent constipation.)
Badams/almonds are directly the reason for the replenishment of fresh brain cells, as many as
fifty cells a day; hence is recommended the slow chewing of at least 4 badams, preferably between 4 am
and 5 am but any other time of the day will do. Every 7 months the body’s cells undergo a change – about
100 progress to become brain cells, a certain amount become sex cells for regeneration. We burn away or
waste a few thousand brain cells a year with no replacement normally, but eating badams is rare means to
make up the deficit. Bitter badams contain natural quinine to cleanse the blood, so they are preferable.
For chronic acidity and indigestion, early in the morning place one sweet, white batasa (sugar
biscuit) with a liberal spoon of white butter spread over it on the tongue and let it melt/crumble and trickle
down the throat. Continue this for a few months -- it will provide a new lining to the food
pipe/esophagus/stomach and alleviate acidity/indigestion. 5 drops amrutdhara in a teaspoon of water
taken last thing at night before going to sleep augments this treatment and is excellent for an upset
stomach.
One drop of eucalyptus oil (normally a poison!) attracts the bad bacteria in the stomach and
intestines to itself forming a ball which the body then eliminates. Take infrequently, say once a month.
