Mike Azevedo
Sketching & Thought Process

● Make drawing a habit - do something every day

● Sketching doesn't necessarily have a time limit, just something
that isn't super polished
● Don't copy without thinking - use visual annotation and then
try to apply knowledge
● Don't think it has to be pretty - even if a study looks garbage
it helped you learn
● Don't be afraid to start over - mistakes are crucial to learning
● Failure teaches you what not to do
● Try to communicate an idea
● Use a sketch or study to try to solve one problem -
concentrate on just the lighting or composition for example
● 75% of the painting is there just to support the 25% that
really matters
● Simplify - Limit the amount of values
● Don't apply the same amount of detailing all over the painting -
control the focal point
● Take risks!

Jenny Harder
Passion Projects

● Jenny formerly worked as a character concept artist

for Disney Infinity

● Working on a passion project in her free time to produce a 3D

animated short film entitled “Being Good”

● Team is assembled from creatives from around the industry,

all working unpaid just for the love of the project

● Projects like this take a lot more time than you initially think;
people have other commitments, things take longer than estimated,
unexpected events and technical problems can arise

● Get people to help you with the organization as well as the creation

● Expect not to have much of a life while working on something like

this, especially if you also have a full-time job

● You have to be really committed - if this is your idea then you have
to be the one to see it through

Storytelling through Images

● The wow factor of a beautiful image only lasts so long,

the most important factor is storytelling
● Observe from life - look at people, body language,
what is that person thinking? What's his story?
● Research history, cultures
● Ask yourself questions about your character/image:
Where does he come from?
What's his goal?
Is he running from something / Trying to get something?
Does he come from a culture with particular shapes, colors, beliefs?
What is his heritage?
What's his personality?
● All these considerations can give soul to an image
● Use composition, shape, color and light to lead the viewer’s eye
in the path you choose
● When we look at a clock we want to see the time, we don't care
about the gears that make the clock work. In the same way the
viewer of an image only cares about the story, not the techniques
used to create it.

Tips for Being a Successful Freelancer

● Remember that it’s ok to say no to a job sometimes

● Everything you do professionally feeds into your ‘brand’ as an artist
● Consider if the job fits your brand
● No work? Don’t panic - use it as a time for self reflection /
improvement. Spend time on your online presence or personal work
● You need to be good at time tracking, discipline, management & admin
● Break down tasks into smaller chunks, eg: “I want to have the linework
finished by lunchtime”
● Take time to switch off, look after your body & mind
● Do research, or hire someone to look after the business side
● Don’t sign contracts you don’t agree with or don’t understand
● As a freelancer you have to be 50% artist and 50% businessman
● Always be polite and professional in your communications
● Plan ahead when it comes to money - put some aside for the future:
family, healthcare, emergencies etc.
● Try not to rely on one income stream - look at passive income
● When starting out try to have at least 6 months worth of savings
in the bank
● Never work for free!

Even Mehl Amundsen
Painting Process

● Start with line sketch

● Once you’re satisfied with the line, block in the complete silhouette
● Add a simple background
● Use your silhouette as a mask and then block in local flat colours on
separate layers
● Add a with layer above the flats so you can clearly see volumes
● Paint shadows on a multiply layer
● Delete white layer
● Add colour dodge layer, and paint lighting - darker colours work best
with this layer blend mode
● Merge layers
● Continue to render more on a new layer
● Additional lighting such as rim & bounce light can be added
● Tidy up edges & background, add finishing touches.

Jakub Rebelka
Illustration Process

● Jakub studied as a fine artist in Poland

● His process is quite chaotic, he often has only a vague idea at the
beginning and finds the final image through experimentation

● He starts with rough sketch in pencil or ink, finding shapes as he

works with the line

● He then scans into the computer to refine the line until he is happy
with the overall direction - He doesn’t worry about working
everything out at this stage

● He will then apply flat colours to work out the balance of the image

● Then using layer blend modes he will change the appearance of the
colours until he finds something he is happy with

● He will often change the composition at this stage, going back to

the lineart or bringing new linework into the image

● Refining the image in Photoshop until he is happy with the result,

he often ends up with something very different from the initial idea.

Joon Ahn
Concept Art & World Building

● Joon is a concept artist currently working for Riot Games

● They are currently working on a project to build a coherent world

for the League of Legends franchise

● The idea is that they work with the existing characters and create a
world that can be used for future franchise development, such as
spin-off games, books, movies, merchandising and more

● They are developing several factions, who will each have their own
unique visual language from which their design will flow

● Each environment must make sense in the universe, they must

consider function and reason in their visual design

● This affects all aspects of the world creation, including

architecture, costume, weapon design and so on.

Guerrilla Games
Concept Process for Horizon: Zero Dawn

● From initial conception to release, Guerrilla Games

worked on Horizon: Zero Dawn for around 6 years

● The process of character concepting starts with an idea,

lots of research and reference-finding

● There are many factors to take into consideration, such as the

environment the character lives in, their technology, their function
in society, personality and so on

● Expect lots of iterations - for a main character you can be working

on just one aspect of the design (eg; the hairstyle) for weeks

● Don’t get too attached to a particular design, it can be scrapped

in order to find a new direction

● It’s a collaborative process - many artists work together to achieve

the final result
