5. Learning English through Poems and Songs

Personal growth is the ongoing process of understanding and developing yourself in order to
achieve your fullest potential.

You have just heard the following beautiful song about personal growth:

The Circle Game

by Joni Mitchell
(a Canadian singer-songwriter)

Yesterday a child came out to wonder

Caught a dragonfly inside a jar
Fearful when the sky was full of thunder
And tearful at the falling of a star

And the seasons they go round and round

And the painted ponies go up and down a carousel
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return we can only look
Behind from where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game.

the way to a cliff

Joni Mitchell

You have been inspired by this song to share on your online blog the different views of time
when people grow older.

In your blog, you may write on the effects on our emotional and physical health if
we see time as the way to a cliff
we see time as a carousel
S.6/ENG (II)/Q&A/P.9
6. Learning English through Social Issues

In the present situation of Hong Kong, the licence of a taxi does not require offering high-quality
service. Right now, most of the taxi drivers are self-employed and their average age is 58. Worse
still, the traffic accident rate of the taxis is relatively higher and there are various complaints
about taxi service, including overcharging, refusing hire and improper behaviour.

Accordingly, the government is now considering the implementation of high-quality

point-to-point taxi service by offering three licences of franchise to large companies (e.g.
Alibaba.com) with each having an investment of $100 million to operate 200 taxis. The new
franchised taxi can charge 50% higher fares and can be booked by an app (like the e-hailing of
Uber).

However, the idea of franchised taxis is rejected by the local taxi industry.

As a contributing writer of a column on social issues of your school newspaper, you are asked to
write an article on the issue of franchised taxi in Hong Kong, paying particular attention to the
following aspects:

two problems of the existing taxi service

the need for high-quality taxi service
whether the idea of franchised taxis is workable

wheelchair accessible taxi

taxi van
S.6/ENG (II)/Q&A/P.10
7. Learning English through Popular Culture

Your school newspaper invites students to write an article to share their views connected with
superheroes. The topic is as below:

Among the following six superheroes of Avengers, which one do you like most? State
TWO reasons for your choice.

As far as you know, which TWO problems of Hong Kong do you think could be
solved by your favourite superhero (chosen above)? State clearly what he could do for
our city.

Captain America Iron Man

Hulk Black Panther

Ant-Man Thor

Write your article.

S.6/ENG (II)/Q&A/P.11

8. Learning English through Debating

The Hong Kong Morning Post invites readers to submit their views on the following topic:

“Originally, all land of country parks is mainly reserved only for hiking and spotting wildlife.
However, because of the housing crisis, some people propose that the land of a few country parks
should be used for public housing. They even claim that country parks should be considered first
for land supply even though the land from other sites (such as golf courses, brownfield sites and
farmland) may also be good sources.”

Write an argumentative essay.

Choose one side of the argument and state clearly whether you agree OR disagree that the
land of country parks should be used for development, giving reasons and evidence to
support your view.
Include a title for your essay.
