Exercise 1.1

Use five sentences or less to answer each of the following questions completely.

1. To address the problem of traffic in a big city, several straight roads are being constructed. It
was noted that two roads will have at most junction, three roads will have at most three
junctions and so on.

a. Complete the table below. Identify the pattern on the maximum number of junctions for
each given number of straight roads.

No. of roads 2 3 4 5 6
No. of intersections 1 3 6 10 15
(at most)

b. At most how many junctions are expected to be constructed if there will be seven roads in
the city?
- If there are seven roads in the city, the number of junctions that are expected to be
constructed are 21.
2. Why are numbers important in our life? Explain your answer.
- For me, numbers are important in our life as man’s identity is recognized and also
begins with the date of birth time, where numbers are involved. Also, in our day-to-day
life, number are used in money transaction matter. Events where numbers are involved
are reported day, month, and year wise. Numbers appear one way or the other in every
aspect of our lives.
3. Other than those mentioned in the section, enumerate five (5) situations where you have to use
numbers.
- Other situations that you need to use numbers are first, in a basketball game. You can’t
determine the score of the two teams whether who’s on the lead or who’s behind if you
don’t use numbers. Second is when, you’re measuring a height of a wood. You need to
use conversions of numbers to find the accurate measurement of it. Third is when,
you’re answering a math problem, you need to use constant numbers to find the value
that is needed to be solved in that problem. Fourth is when, you’re remembering how
much money have you spent for the rest of the day. And lastly, we use numbers to
determine an age of a person or thing that has been long gone and recently found or
discovered.
4. Other than those mentioned in the section, describe three other patterns of shapes that you see
in nature. Discuss briefly the “mathematics” behind each pattern.
- Pineapples, honeycombs, and waves. All of these natural patterns tend to be described
by one “mathematics” topic which is the Fibonacci sequence. We all know that the
Fibonacci Sequence is the series of numbers that for in order to find the next number,
you need to add the two numbers before it. Just like the patterns in pineapples,
honeycombs, and waves, patterns in these shapes are based on the Fibonacci sequence
in way that the behavior that you see in their appearances are likely synchronized, or
perfect because they are connected by the sum of their two aspects. The way their
patterns are, are really outstanding.
5. Identify and describe at least one pattern that you observe in your locality or within your nearby
environment.
- The cracks of the trees. I noticed that they have patterns but its not that exactly the
same. Some of it have wider cracks and some are narrower. And also the leaves, they
have the same patters as of the other leaves. Even if they’re not compiled into one
branch, the leaves are still the same not just in pattern but also in their shapes and sizes.
