Migration To 5G - A TSP Perspective

The document discusses the transition to 5G networks and technologies from a telecommunications service provider perspective. 5G will enable new use cases like IoT, support low latency applications, and use service-based architectures. Key impact areas of 5G include smart cities, logistics, industry 4.0, and public safety. India can leverage 5G for governance, disaster relief, connecting rural areas, education and health networks, and dedicated social media platforms. The document outlines various options for deploying 5G networks and recommends starting with a non-standalone approach. It also discusses the need for more data centers across India to support 5G. Private LTE networks are highlighted as a way to meet diverse enterprise connectivity needs.

Migration to 5G

A TSP Perspective

5G Ushers in a Revolution
● 2G to 4G : Services such as voice and messaging (e.g. 2G) or mobile broadband
(e.g. 3G, 4G)

● 5G will have flexibility and configurability to serve IoT (Internet of Things)with

massive machine type communications [mMTC] use cases, support ultra-reliable,
low latency connections [uRLCC] as well as enhanced mobile broadband [eMBB]
Employs Service Based Architecture [SBA]

● IMPACT AREAS:
○ Smart cities
○ Logistics
○ Industry 4.0
○ Public safety
What India can look forward in 5G
● Governance Enabler
○ A secured high capacity enabler for all Central, State Govt functions

● Public Protection & Disaster Relief [PPDR]

○ A separate n/w dedicated for this purpose

● Connecting the unconnected

○ Enhanced Mobile Broadband – eMBB can be the ideal complement to Bharatnet

● Education, Health Networks

○ An information highway serving our academic & health institutions can get a boost

● Social networks for India Exclusive

○ An Exclusive platform can provide secured interface
5G Deployment Options
Standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA)
Option 1 | SA LTE with EPC Option 2 | SA NR with 5GC Option 5 | SA eLTE with 5GC

S1 - U N3 (UP) X2-U Xn-U
Plan for 5G
● 4G is going to be there for quite some time
● eMBB is going to be the biggest driver initially
● Option 3 appears to be the best candidate for
smooth launch of 5G
● Have a NFV based EPC that can be upgraded to
the Option 3 as and when the 5G spectrum is
available
Need for data centers
● For better latencies, data centers in all SSA HQs
● If possible go below to select SDCA HQs as well
● Effectively, we may have to cover large no. of
DHQs
● Leverage the existing infrastructure in those sites
for CDNs, DCs and build big pipes
● Move from a metro centric view
P-LTE networks
● A pilot private LTE network launched in Chennai for a
manufacturing shop floor
● Key learning has been that it is possible to have a reliable
private LTE network for meeting the diverse needs of an
enterprise while meeting all the requirements of
throughput, latency, security
P-LTE networks…
● Added benefits
○ Product Quality improved
○ Better surveillance and supervision
○ Mtce saving as no more cable runs
○ Automation
○ Human and M2M communication
● Need to scale and use in real life scenario on a wider area
● Can be extended to 5G based networks as well
Thank you
