The single most important rigging precaution is to determine the weight of a load before attempting to lift it,
making ample allowances for unknown factors, and determining the available capacity of the equipment being
used. It is equally important to rig the load so that it is stable, and the center of gravity is below the hook. The
safety of personnel involved in rigging and hoisting operations largely depends upon care and common
sense. Remember these safe practices:
1.) Know the working load limit (WLL) of the equipment being used. NEVER exceed this limit.
3.) The WLL of all rigging equipment appies only to freely-suspended loads on plumb hoist lines.

INDUSTRY CODES AND STANDARDS OVERVIEW
Reference
Slings shall not be loaded in excess of their rated capacities
Slings shall be padded or protected from the sharp edges of their loads
Each day before being used, the sling and all fastenings and attachments shall be inspected for damage or
defects by a competent person designated by the employer. Additional inspections shall be performed during
sling use, where service conditions warrant. Damaged or defective slings shall be immediately removed from
service.
The design factor for alloy steel chain slings shall be a minimum of 4
Horizontal sling angles less than 30 deg shall not be used except as recommended by the sling manufacturer
or a qualified person
In a choker hitch, an angle of choke less than 120 degrees should not be used without reducing the rated load
Sharp edges in contact with the sling should be padded with material of sufficient strength to protect the sling.
In a choker hitch, the choke point should only be on the sling body, not on a splice or fitting.
In a choker hitch, an angle of choke less than 120 deg should not be used without reducing the rated load.
Rated loads for angles of choke less than 120 deg shall be determined by using the values in ASME B30.9 -
Fig. 7, the sling manufacturer, or a qualified person.

This should be used only when the type of shape is not know
(ie: WF16 X 40). It will calculate the approximate weight based
on rough field measurements. The result will always be about
4% to 8% more than the actual weight for a steel beam of the
indicated size. This will ensure that the rigging used will be
sufficient.

Data obtained from Manufacturers website and/or catalog information (April 2006)
TPXC is the best synthetic sling made by SlingMax (as of 2006). It is made with K-Spec® high performance fibers, and it has a
bulked nylon outer cover (Covermax®) that is very abrasion resistant.
All of these slings have overload tell-tails, inner red cover, and are used worldwide in place of chain and wire rope slings for heavy
lifts. Also, they are repairable. They have fiber optics for inspection. The Twin-Path® patented design provides the rigger with
redundant protection in the event that one path is cut. These slings have 1% stretch at rated capacity and are made in
matched lengths. These slings conform to ASME B30.9 Chapter 9-6 and US Navy NAVFAC P-307 Section 14.
