Argument: Here’s What I Think

For our next major paper, I would like you to explore two or more sides of a controversial topic and then
create a fair and reasonable argument for one side over the others. Your argument can be over any topic
around which there is currently some kind of debate or discussion, and you need to connect it to Purdue
in some way.

Specifically, you need to come up with an angle that makes this topic relevant to your readers at Purdue
right now. In your argument, identify what is new or has changed recently that makes this topic especially
important to people at Purdue. You might even want to consider a topic relevant to your field of study
here. Also, while I want you to choose something you’re excited about, make sure it is a topic you can
fairly evaluate.

Your primary readers for this argument paper will be Purdue’s President Mitch Daniels and other
university administrators his age. You want to explain both sides of the issue in a way that would be
understandable and persuasive to them and then argue for your side over the other.

The objectives of this assignment are for you to demonstrate the ability to:
• Craft an angle that engages the topic in an innovative, focused way
• Identify and engage multiple perspectives and points of contention in an argument
• Employ plain and persuasive style techniques to influence your audience
• Incorporate argumentative proofs while avoiding logical fallacies
• Conduct basic research and include 3-4 credible sources in your argument
• Continue to: state a clear argumentative thesis statement, follow a logical organizational pattern
(in this case, for an argument), maintain consistency in style, narrow your content for the scope
of the paper, and revise to eliminate grammar and usage errors

Content/Organization (p. 185 of Writing Today): An argument typically includes an introduction that
states the issue, its sides, and an explicit thesis. You can approach the body of the paper in different ways,
but always make sure to include an objective summary of both sides of the argument with a discussion of
why your position is overall better. The conclusion should both drive home your point and look to the
future of the topic.

Style (p. 191-193 of Writing Today): Your style should enhance your argument, so be deliberate in your
choices of plain and persuasive techniques, figurative language, paragraphing, tone, etc.

Design (p. 193-194 of Writing Today): Your design choices should also clarify and enhance your
argument, so make use of headings within your paper as well as at least 2 graphics (e.g., photograph,
diagram, etc.).

Your essay should be about 1300 words in the following format: Times New Roman, Arial, Georgia,
Helvetica, or Garamond typeface, 12 pt. font size, double-spaced, and 1-inch margins.

Please use an MLA heading at the top left corner of the first page and include a professional title. Your
document should be named in the following format: ENGL106.Argument.[your last name].This
assignment is due on 10/17 and should be submitted to me as a Microsoft Word document through our
course Blackboard site by 11:59PM.
