10 EMC Documentum Content Server Enterprise Edition Release Notes, Version 6.6
Chapter 1
Product Description

EMC Documentum Content Server Enterprise Edition is the core of the EMC Documentum content
management platform. Content Server governs the content repository and enables a set of content
management services for controlling content and processes throughout distributed enterprises.
Content Server lets you store, manage, and deploy all types of content, including HTML and XML,
graphics, and multimedia. Content Server provides services such as the following:
• Integrated workflow
• Lifecycle and process automation
• Version control
• Security
• Data dictionary for capturing and configuring business rules
Content Server is a 32-bit application that can run on 32–bit or 64–bit operating systems as long as
that operating system supports 32–bit applications. You do not need to manually set a compatibility
mode. The 64–bit operating system automatically manages Content Server as a 32–bit application.
With Content Server, users can share and reuse trusted content on demand within and between
business units. Administrators can define, organize, automate, and monitor all the functions and
tasks of complex business processes. The 6.6 release adds to these capabilities. Chapter 2, New
Features and Changes contains a listing of all new features.

Chapter 2
New Features and Changes

Content Server includes several new features and improvements. This section describes the major
enhancements. Refer to the product documentation for complete information about these features.

New features and changes in 6.6

The following new features and changes apply to Content Server release 6.6:

Java Method Server high-availability support

Content Server 6.6 support Java Method Server (JMS) in high-availability (HA) mode in the form of
failover. JMS supports the following HA configurations:
• Content Server and JMS on a single host
• Content Server and JMS on two hosts
• Content Server and JMS on multiple hosts
The EMC Documentum Content Server Enterprise Edition Installation Guide provides detailed
information on how to install and configure JMS for HA.

Kerberos support
Content Server 6.6 supports Kerberos authentication, which provides a secure single-sign-on (SSO)
solution using Windows Integrated Authentication. Content Server supports Kerberos using the
Microsoft Active Server Domain Services for Kerberos Key Distribution Center (KDC) services.
Documentum Foundation Services (DFS) provide a client interface to Kerberos that is compliant
with the Kerberos Token Profile 1.1 specification. The DFS SDK includes client libraries to support
Kerberos integration for local and remote Java clients, and for .NET clients.

LDAP synchronization supports caching (15267)

To improve performance during LDAP synchronization, you can now enable caching of users and
groups before starting the synchronization process. For details on how to enable caching, see the
Documentum Administrator User Guide.

Support for Atmos stores

Content Server version 6.6 supports Atmos stores. An Atmos store is an EMC software storage
system that consists of several distributed services running on a network of connected hardware
nodes. Each node is attached to one more disk enclosures. The nodes run a collection of services to
store, retrieve, categorize, and manage the data in the system or cloud. Content Server uses the ACS
connector to communicate with the Atmos store. The ACS module supports storing and retrieving of
content through an HTTP interface.
Users can use Documentum Administrator to create, view, and modify Atmos stores from the
Storage page under the Storage Management node. For more information, refer to the Documentum
Administrator User Guide.

Auditing and object owner permission changes

Content Server version 6.6 allows administrators to control the minimum and the extended
permissions for object owners. The minimum owner permissions are granted regardless of any
restrictions that are specified in the ACL of the object and prevent users from accidentally excluding
themselves from being able to modify objects they own.
The minimum and extended object owner permissions apply to the entire repository and can be
configured using Documentum Administrator. For more information, refer to the Documentum
Administrator Release Notes and the Documentum Administrator User Guide.

LEFT OUTER JOIN statement support in DQL

In Content Server version 6.6, DQL supports the standard SQL LEFT OUTER JOIN statement, so
that all the rows from the left element of the join will be returned in the result set, even if there is
no match in the right element. However, when using this feature with repeating attributes, the
results returned may not be what you expect. For more information, refer to the EMC Documentum
Content Server Version 6.6 DQL Reference.

New Features and Changes

High-Volume Server enhancements

In release 6.6, High-Volume Server has been enhanced as follows:
• Partitioning support for SQL Server.
— Support for two-way partition exchange
— Ability to add, delete, split, and merge partitions
— Ability to add partitions without having to restart Content Server
The partitioning feature can be used in SQL Server installations. However, the partitioning model
introduced in 6.5 has been slightly changed for 6.6. For more information, refer to the EMC
Documentum High-Volume Server 6.6 Development Guide.
• Batch Groups
Release 6.6 provides a grouping mechanism for batch inserts. If you open a batch with groups
and there is an error for an item in a group, only the members of that group are rolled back. The
groups without errors are committed. For more information, refer to the EMC Documentum
High-Volume Server 6.6 Development Guide.
• Database footprint reduction
In release 6.6, support for true NULL values was added to Content Server, for databases that
support it. Users can create and alter their own types to take advantage of the space savings
possible with this feature. For more information, refer to the EMC Documentum Content Server
Version 6.6 DQL Reference.

Electronic signature changes

Previous versions of Content Server use fusion.exe to perform the eSignature operation. Content
Server version 6.6 features a Java-based eSignature solution that uses iText for eSignature generation.
iText is an open source Java library for generating and manipulating dynamic PDF documents. The
eSign feature is available to customers who have purchased the TCS license.
The Java-based eSignature solution offers the following:
• Multi-byte characters (CJK)
A Java method is used to invoke the iText, which allows publishing the multi-byte characters on
both, the signature page and the audit trail record.
• Support for all operating systems.
• A maximum of 36 signatures with 6 signatures per each page. Multiple signature pages are
added dynamically.

Note: The Content Server binary (documentum.exe) generally run as a service. But you can also run
it from the command line or the Server Manager GUI. In that case, if you have installed Content
Server as a non-administrator user, Documentum applications will ask for explicit permissions to run
as administrator in Windows 2008.
The following applications will ask for explicit (GUI) permission to run as administrator:
• distoperations
• distoperations_dmcl40
• dm_agent_exec
• dm_checkcacheconfig
• dmbasic
• dmrepfilter
• iapi32
• idql32

Restarting a Windows-DB2 repository after installation

(CS-8967)
When a Windows- DB2 repository is installed and restarted, it does not start completely, and stops
responding at initializing distributed digital signatures for 20 minutes.

Repository with 8 KB page size causes problems in

DB2 (159555/CS-8817)
Creating a tablespace for the repository with a page size of 8 KB causes problems in DB2. The default
page size for DB2 is 4 KB.

RETURN_TOP N does not function correctly (CS-7161)

We enhanced the DQL hint RETURN_TOP N behavior. In previous releases, this hint returned N
rows from a query. Since objects can have different numbers of repeating attributes, different numbers
of objects are returned using this hint. In this release, a DQL query using the RETURN_TOP N hint
can return N objects or N rows from a query. A new server.ini flag, return_top_results_row_based,
now controls this behavior. If this flag is set to true (the default), the RETURN_TOP N hint returns N
rows. If this flag is set to false, RETURN_TOP N returns N objects.

Java Method Server timeout (161308/CS-5748)

By default, the Java Method Server (JMS) has a service startup timeout of 10 minutes. In the Microsoft
Windows environment, on a heavily loaded machine, the JMS can take more than 10 minutes to start
up. If the JMS does not start up within 10 minutes, the Windows Service panel indicates that the
service failed to start. When the JMS starts up, the Windows Service status does not refresh. In this
case, the Windows Service indicates that the JMS failed to start, even though the instance is running.
You can increase the service timeout of the JMS to resolve frequent failure of the JMS startup timeout.

To increase the service startup timeout:

1. Edit the
<DctmUserDir>\jboss4.3.0\server\serviceConfig\MethodServer\conf\DmMethodServer.xml
file.
2. Increase the value of the Timeout attribute for the Start element.
This timeout is the maximum number of seconds to wait for the JMS to start up.

Chapter 4
Environment and System
Requirements

This chapter lists the hardware (machine) requirements and software versions supported with this
release. Machine resources, non-Documentum software components (Operating System, Java
Runtime Environment, and so forth), and other EMC Documentum products determine the unique
environment for each EMC Documentum product. Hardware requirements, page 27, addresses basic
machine resource requirements. Software requirements, page 28, addresses specific software versions
that are required for the installation platform.
Content Server operates on a single environment, with a second server used to manage full-text
indexing.
Documentum Messaging Services (DMS) is a low-maintenance application that operates on a web
application server included with the DMS installer.

Hardware requirements
This section lists nominal machine resources required for product installation and use. Your
individual machine requirements vary depending on factors such as the number of products
installed, size of your deployment, number of users, and network latency. The Documentum System
Sizing Tool dynamically generates estimates of your hardware resource requirements based on your
user and hardware profile.
You can download the Documentum System Sizing Tool from the Powerlink website
(http://powerlink.emc.com) by navigating to: Home > Support > Technical Documentation and
Advisories > Software ~ D ~ Documentation > Documentum System > Systems Sizing.

Content Server machine requirements

The following table provides nominal resource requirements for the Content Server host machine
and the index server host machine. You can run Content Server and the index server on the same
host machine; however, you need to ensure that the cumulative installation requirements listed in
both Table 1, page 28 and Table 3, page 28 are met. In other words, if Content Server and the index
server are on the same host, a minimum of 6 GB of RAM is required (2 MB for Content Server and

IPv6 support

Documentum 6.5 and later now supports dual-stack (IPv4 or IPv6) and native IPv4 operation. In
addition to this, Documentum 6.5 and later products which are Java based applications also support
native IPv6 operation. Support for dual-stack operation enables Documentum 6.5 and later products
to use the appropriate protocol (IPv4 or IPv6) when communicating with third-party products and
other Documentum products.
By default, Content Server 6.5 and later is configured for dual-stack operation. Content Server
deployed on a dual-stack environment can be configured for native IPv4 operation. Documentum
Administrator User Guide, version 6.6 provides more information.
Note: Information on protocol support for third-party products is provided in the third-party
product documentation.

Known problems
This section describes known defects in EMC Documentum software that can affect your use of
the product.

Disable dmclean and filescan when performing dump

and load operations (CS-16155)
When performing a load operation, some loaded ACLs are orphaned immediately after they are
loaded. This usually occurs because a user is included in a dump file, which also causes the inclusion
of the user’s default ACL. If the user is not loaded on the target repository (because it already exists),
the user’s default ACL is loaded anyways and will likely be orphaned immediately.
When dmclean runs, orphaned ACLs will be deleted. If it runs after the ACL is loaded but before
phase 2 of a load operation, the load itself will fail. This is because in phase 2 the server attempts
to fetch every object that was previously loaded in phase 1 to make modifications. If the object has
already been deleted, the load fails. This error is more likely to occur when loading large dump files.
Use Documentum Administrator to disable the dmclean and filescan functions before performing
dump and load operations.

EMC Documentum Content Server Enterprise Edition Release Notes, Version 6.6 45
Known Problems and Limitations

Syntax error in consistency checker (CS–15877)

The consistency checker file contains a query syntax error that will generate an error message. To
correct this error, open the consistency_checker.ebs file and add a space between the words "and”
and "b1” at line 625.

AIX/Db2 server will not start on AIX 6.1 if the timezone

format is an Olson timezone (CS-15210)
The server and several other AIX/DB2 binaries will not start on AIX 6.1 if the timezone format
specified in the TZ environment variable is an Olson timezone, for example, America/Los_Angeles.
To work around this issue, specify the date format should instead be specified in POSIX format, for
example, PST8PDT, which is the equivalent of America/Los_Angeles. For a permanent solution,
contact EMC Technical Support.

Large number of audit trail entries (CS-15183)

If there are a large number of audit trail entries, for example, larger than 5 million, EMC Documentum
recommends creating the index off working hours to avoid possible impact on the performance
perceived by users. To create the index, use the following command:
execute make_index with type_name=’dm_audittrail’, attribute=’i_is_archived’

Error message might appear during initial repository

configuration (CS-15177)
During an initial repository configuration the installation program might generate the following
error: [DM_SYSOBJECT_E_TYPE_DEF_ACL]error: "ACL inheritance failed, due to missing ACL
in the type ’feddoc".
This occurs because during the installation, the installation program is looking for an object that will
not be created until the configuration is completed. The initial installation log file that is created
when configuration starts will show this error. However, if you restart Content Server after the
configuration is completed, another log file is created and the error will no longer show on that log file.

No special characters in Java Management Extension

(JMX) console passwords (CS-14830)
The password for JMX console administration cannot contain any of the following characters: @,
#, $, &, !, %, ^, *, +, " ’, |, \.

46 EMC Documentum Content Server Enterprise Edition Release Notes, Version 6.6
Known Problems and Limitations

Upgrading Content Server 5.3 or 6.0 to Content Server

6.5 (CS-14612)
When upgrading Content Server 5.3 or 6.0 to Content Server 6.5, an instance of Jboss is installed to act
as the JMS serving Content Server. During the installation process for the JMS, the user is asked for a
port that the JMS will listen on. If this port is different from the one specified in the Content Server 5.3
or 6.0 installation, the dm_server_config object attribute app_server_uri will not reflect the change
in port for custom applications. This means that the default Documentum applications, such as
do_mail, do_method will get updated to reflect the change in port but custom applications deployed
and added to the dm_server_config object will not be updated. Consider the following example:

Example 5-1. Content Server upgrade

app_server_name [0]: do_method

[1]: do_mail
[2]: http_post
app_server_uri [0]: http://localhost:20000/DmMethods/servlet/DoMethod
[1]: http://localhost:20000/DmMail/servlet/DoMail
[2]: http://localhost:9080/custom/a/bservlet
In the example above, the do_method and do_mail were updated correctly to reflect the new port
(9080->20000) but the custom application was not.

To resolve this issue, you need to make manual changes to the dm_server_config by using
either Documentum Administrator, interactive application programming interface (IAPI), or
interactive Documentum Query Language (IDQL). Change the dm_server_config app_server_uri
attribute to reflect the changes. In the example above, you need to change app_server_uri[2]:
http://localhost:9080/custom/a/bservlet to app_server_uri[2]: http://localhost:20000/custom/a/bservlet.

The dmdocbrokertest tool does not work in UNIX

environment (CS-14577)
When running the dmdocbrokertest tool in the following UNIX environments, an assertion failure
occurs with the error: "Segmentation fault (core dumped)". This failure occurs on the following
platforms:
• Solaris
• SUSE
• HP-UX IA
• Linux
No workaround for this issue is available. Do not run the dmdocbrokertest tool in UNIX
environments. Alternatively, you can run the dmqdocbroker command from the operating system
command line.

EMC Documentum Content Server Enterprise Edition Release Notes, Version 6.6 47
Known Problems and Limitations

Data from NVARCHAR columns do not display

correctly when importing tables using SQLServer 2008
management studio (CS-14366)
If you import tables using SQL Server 2008 management studio, data from NVARCHAR columns do
not display correctly because DQL does not support the maximum size as it is SQL Server specific. To
work around this issue, redefine NVARCHAR(MAX) columns to NVARCHAR(256).

Missing unique index when upgrading Content Server

to 6.5.x (CS-14315)
Upgrading to Content Server 6.5.x fails to create a unique index on the message_id,
message_link_count, and parent_message_id attributes of the dm_message_archive type. This
issue can cause duplicate records to be inserted into the dm_message_archive type when using
Documentum Client for Outlook (DCO) or Webtop (WT) to insert emails into an 6.5.x upgraded
repository, which in turn causes users to see duplicate email messages from DCO or WT.
This issue only occurs on upgraded repositories. New 6.5.x repositories do not have this problem.
To find out whether your system is affected, run the following DQL query as a superuser to see if
duplicate records exist in dm_message_archives:
DQL> select a.r_object_id, b.r_object_id, a.message_id,
a.parent_message_id from dm_message_archive(LITE) a,
dm_message_archive(LITE) b
where a.r_object_id <> b.r_object_id and
a.message_id = b.message_id and
a.message_link_count = b.message_link_count and
a.parent_message_id = b.parent_message_id
order by message_id, parent_message_id
DQL> go
To resolve this issue, do the following:
• If any rows that are returned from the query above have duplicate entries, contact EMC
Documentum Technical Support.
• If you do not have duplicate entries, create the missing index using the following command in
the IAPI:
IAPI>apply,c,NULL,MAKE_INDEX,TYPE_NAME,S,dm_message_archive,ATTRIBUTE,S,message_id,ATTRIBUTE,S,
message_link_count,ATTRIBUTE,S,parent_message_id,USE_ID_COL,B,F,UNIQUE,B,T

READ_COMMITTED_SNAPSHOT setting for SQL Server

2005 databases (CS-14312)
When setting up a new repository by using the server configuration program, you have the option of
using the installation program to create a new database or an existing database. If you are using SQL
Server 2005, and decide to use an existing database that has been created manually, ensure that the
database value "READ_COMMITTED_SNAPSHOT" is set to be "ON".

48 EMC Documentum Content Server Enterprise Edition Release Notes, Version 6.6
Known Problems and Limitations

Job sequencing fails intermittently on SUSE Linux

(CS-14114)
Job sequencing fails intermittently on SUSE Linux platforms and throws the following exception :
• ++ com.documentum.server.impl.method.jobSequence.JobSequenceException: Jobs Failed
• ++ at com.documentum.server.impl.method.jobSequence.JobSequenceException.
jobsFailed(JobSequenceException.java:39)
• ++ at com.documentum.server.impl.method.jobSequence.JobSequence.ckRunFailed(JobSequence.
java:373)
• ++ at com.documentum.server.impl.method.jobSequence.JobSequence.doTheWork(JobSequence.
java:358)
• .++ at com.documentum.server.impl.method.jobSequence.JobSequence.run(JobSequence.java:288)
• ++ at com.documentum.server.impl.method.jobSequence.DmRunDependentJobs.
main(DmRunDependentJobs.java:41)
However, even though the above exception is thrown and failure is reported, all the jobs in the
sequence do succeed except for replication jobs. Whenever job sequencing fails, it always fails with a
stack depicting failure in shared memory cleanup within the Java virtual machine (JVM). To resolve
this issue, restart the Content Server host.

Missing database indexes on repository upgrades from

version 5.3 to 6.5 (CS-13758)
When you upgrade a repository from version 5.3 to 6.5, several indexes are not created. In general,
these indexes are new ones added to repositories since 5.3, and are created correctly for new
repositories. You can add these indexes manually by first issuing the DROP_INDEX command,
then the MAKE_INDEX command.
The syntax for the DROP_INDEX command is:
• apply,c,NULL,DROP_INDEX,RESERVED_ID,I,<id>
OR
• apply,c,NULL,DROP_INDEX,NAME,S,<name>

Note: You must examine the database to find the index name to use in the second form. It takes the
format "d_1f...", and the index name must be in all lowercase.
The syntax for the MAKE_INDEX command is:
• apply,c,NULL,MAKE_INDEX,TYPE_NAME,S,<name>,[ATTRIBUTE,S,<name>],
USE_ID_COL,B,<value>,UNIQUE,B,<value>,RESERVED_ID,I,<id>,ID_IN_FRONT,B,<value>
Note: RESERVED_ID should be the value added to LONG_MIN, not the actual value that is used
for the ID.
The following is a listing of the indexes you need to drop and then make. The list includes the
type and attributes of the index, and the commands needed to drop and then make the index.

EMC Documentum Content Server Enterprise Edition Release Notes, Version 6.6 49
Known Problems and Limitations

Where the command includes the text, <fill in name>, you must find the index name, as described
above, and use it instead of <fill in name>. The MAKE_INDEX commands are long, and run over
multiple lines in this listing.

Timeout during a graceful shutdown of a workflow

agent (CS-13710)
If a timeout during a graceful shutdown of a workflow agent occurs, Content Server and any
executing work items are put into paused state. After Content Server restarts those work items

EMC Documentum Content Server Enterprise Edition Release Notes, Version 6.6 51
Known Problems and Limitations

remain in paused state while the rest of the work items execute normally. To resolve this issue, the
supervisor of the workflow, which is typically the user who starts the workflow, can either rerun or
terminate the work item from his or her inbox.

When placing a firewall between Content Server and the

database, connection problems can occur (CS-13273)
Depending on which value is set on the TCP Keep Alive parameter on the database server, a firewall
placed between the database server and Content Server might terminate connections that are part of a
work item creation and inbox item creation. To work around this, modify the firewall timeout value
to be greater than the Content Server timeout value and set the TCP Keep Alive parameter of the
database a greater value as the Content Server timeout value. On an Oracle database, also set the
following parameters:
listener.ora file --> INBOUND_CONNECT_TIMEOUT_LISTENER = 0
sqlnet.ora file (create a file as one does not exist) -->
SQLNET.INBOUND_CONNECT_TIMEOUT = 0
You must restart the listener and the database for these settings to apply.

XML store does not support high availability (CS-13192)

XML store presently does not support high availability. Only one XML store instance can be active at
one time because of the way the XML store storage object is modeled in the repository.

Setting of the bind_type of the dm_ldap_config object

to bind_search_dn not supported (CS-12572)
Content Server does not support the bind_type of the dm_ldap_config object to be set to
bind_search_dn when the mandatory property user_login_name is mapped to an LDAP expression.
LDAP users are unable to authenticate and log on to the repository.

Requirement for installation on Windows Server 2008

(CS-12030)
Before you can install Content Server on a Windows Server 2008 platform, you must disable user
account control (UAC). Otherwise, you will get the message: "Access is denied” Content Server
utilities. To disable UAC, follow these steps:
1. Navigate toControl Panel->User Accounts.
2. Click Turn User Account Control on and off.

environment (CS-11974)
LDAP SSL functionality is not working in HP-UX environment without having
"$JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/PA_RISC2.0/native_threads" in the SHLIB_PATH.
To work around this issue, do the following: Set "$JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/PA_RISC2.0/native_threads"
in SHLIB_PATH environment variable on the Content Server host machine. For example, setenv
SHLIB_PATH $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/PA_RISC2.

Index agent configuration fails when configured to an

upgraded repository (5.3 SP6 to 6.5 SP2) (CS-11774)
Index agent configuration fails when configured to an upgraded repository (5.3 SP6 to 6.5 SP2).
To work around this issue, do the following:

1. Upgrade to 6.5 SP2 Content Server.

2. Upgrade connection broker and repository.
Connection broker and repository start automatically.
3. Manually restart Content Server.
4. Install index server and configure index agent.

Display configuration script fails when upgrading from

5.3 SP6 to 6.5 SP2 on (CS-11713)

error message: [DM_TYPE_MGR_E_CANT_FIND_TABLE] error: "Failure to find table
a_3459310_sv as part of fetch of type a_3459310: error from database
system is [DBTableImp::SetUp] Table not exists."
To work around this issue, do the following:

1. Install Content Server version 6.5 SP2.

2. Upgrade the global repository.
3. In the database, run the following query: update dm_type_s set views_valid=0.
4. Restart the repository.

7. Restart the repository.

Creating a dump file with "full docbase dump”

operation (CS-9297)
When a dump file is created using the "full docbase dump” operation, the contents of the System
cabinet are dumped. This situation causes errors after the file is loaded.
This problem affects Full Docbase Dump under Dump and Load. Do not perform this operation.

Errors encountered when configuring a repository on

64-bit SQL server (167855/CS-2815, CS-9245)
When you configure a repository on the 64-bit SQL server, the configuration program looks at
the wrong Program Files directory, for example, Program Files (x86). As a result, the data source
drop-down list does not get populated.
To work around this issue, do the following:

1. On a 64-bit OS, set up DSN for 32-bit applications.

2. Use the 32-bit ODBC Data Source Administrator tool, which is available at
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe.
After the DSN is set, the data source drop-down list is populated.

To work around this issue, install SQL Server Management Tools on the client.

During repository configuration, repository headstart

script fails on AIX-DB2 (CS-8937)
During repository configuration, repository headstart script fails on AIX-DB2 because it is not able to
create a default storage area.
To work around this problem, change the following parameters:
• On AIX, set EXTSHM to ON in the environment of the DB2 instance owner. You can do this task
in the .cshrc file or the corresponding system file for the different shells.
setenv EXTSHM ON

• In the DB2 environment, type this command:

export EXTSHM=ON
db2set DB2ENVLIST=EXTSHM

JMS does not restart properly (CS-8922)

On Microsoft Windows, if the JMS is running, clicking the Restart option under services for JMS does

Installer checks for availability of minimum disk space

of 3 GB (160063/CS-5700)
The installer checks for 3 GB under the installation destination. If you have set the temporary
directory to the same partition as your installation destination, when the installer runs the disk space
check, part of the free 3 GB is used up by the temporary files.
To work around this problem, run the installer with the -is:tempdir option to specify a temproary
directory on another partition.
Note: If you use a temporary directory that shares the same disk partition as the installation
destination, add 1 GB to the disk requirement for the installation destination.

Upgrading repository from 5.3SP1 to 6.5 fails

(160561/CS-5720)
While upgrading the repository from 5.3 SP1 to 6.5 on HP-IA/Oracle, the installation program fails
to run the Enables audit default script. Even before starting this upgrade, the ACS Administration
URL registration also fails.
To work around this issue, verify the following: If approved_clients_only is not
true (the default) in the repository configuration , and the environment variable
DM_LOGIN_ALLOW_INVALID_SIGNATURE is set, the authentication succeeds.

Content not migrating from EMC Centera source to

target source file (132772/CS-5825)
When attempting to migrate content from an EMC Centera source file store to an EMC Centera target
file store, the content does not migrate and an error message appears.
To work around this problem, do the following:
If the source file store object and the target file store object point to the same Centera connection
string (in a_storage_params[0] of the store objects), set the following option as a value for
a_storage_params[1] or later for both store file objects:

cannot communicate through IPv6.

56 EMC Documentum Content Server Enterprise Edition Release Notes, Version 6.6
Known Problems and Limitations

Content Server and database cannot communicate

through IPv6 (152513/CS-5425)
If SQL Server 2005 database is on the remote host from the Content Server, the Content Server and
database cannot communicate through IPv6.
Do the following to work around this issue:
1. Configure the repository using the pre-6.5 installation steps.
This uses the open database connectivity (ODBC) data source name (DSN).
2. Manually re-create the DSN using SQL Native Client.
The DSN name must be the same as the ODBC DSN. This procedure removes the original ODBC
DSN.

Remote Content Server installation has no option to

select native and secure modes (152146/CS-5413)
In the remote Content Server installation, while enabling the dual mode (native and secure) on the

Modifying dm_server_config object stops processing

of workflow activities (158220/CS-4952)
After modifying the dm_server_config object through Documentum Administrator, automatic
workflow activities stop processing. The dm_server_config object is versioned, and modifying the
object changes the r_object_id. The workflow queue agent contains the server ID in the a_wq_name
property. Residual work items stop processing because they are associated with the old server ID and
not the new one. Run the RECOVER_AUTO_TASKS administration method to reset the a_wq_name
property of the work items to empty, or perform the following workaround:
1. Point the auto task to the correct workflow queue agent.

EMC Documentum Content Server Enterprise Edition Release Notes, Version 6.6 57
Known Problems and Limitations

Find the r_object_id of the correct Content Server where the workflow agent is running. Select
r_object_id, object_name, and wf_agent_worker_threads from dm_server_config
2. Do one of the following:
• Reset a_wq_name to content server object ID:

Api>execsql,c,update dmi_workitem_s set a_wq_name =

’new workflow agent id ’ where a_wq_name = ’old wf agentid’

• Set a_wq_name to null, default value:

Api>execsql,c,update dmi_workitem_s set a_wq_name =

’ ’ where a_wq_name = ’old wf agentid’

3. Restart Content Server to enable the automatic tasks to resume and work.

The dm_netegrity plugin fails to identify or authenticate

a user properly when using an NT LAN Manager (NTLM)
web (CS-4904)
The dm_netegrity plugin fails to identify or authenticate a user properly when using an NTLM web
agent to protect a web resource, such as Webtop.
When using an NTLM web agent, the dm_netegrity plugin is able to:
• Correctly retrieve the dm_user object
• Verify that the token is valid
However, authentication fails when it tries to verify the domain name (DN) encoded in the token
with the DN on the user. The agent does not extract the DN from the token, but extracts the username
used to log on to SiteMinder.
The authentication is failing because in the NTLM authentication, the username is of the form
<WINDOWS_DOMAIN>\<USER>.

58 EMC Documentum Content Server Enterprise Edition Release Notes, Version 6.6
Known Problems and Limitations

Aspect attribute limitations on all operating system and

database combinations (144867/CS-4745)
The following limitation applies to all operating system and database combinations:
• When using an ORDER BY clause on an aspect attribute, add a not null constraint on the aspect
attribute specified in the WHERE clause. For example, if you have an aspect called item and one of
the aspect attributes of item is category, the following DQL statement returns incorrect results:
Select r_object_id, item.category from dm_sysobject
ORDER BY item.category

Instead, modify the query as follows:

Select r_object_id, item.category from dm_sysobject
WHERE item.category is not null ORDER BY item.category

• When using a GROUP BY clause on an aspect attribute, add a not null constraint on the aspect
attribute specified in the WHERE clause. For example, if you have an aspect called item with two
aspect attributes called category and price, the following DQL statement returns incorrect results:
Select item.category, count(*) from dm_sysobject GROUP BY item.category

Instead, modify the query as follows:

Select item.category, count (*) from dm_sysobject
WHERE item.category is not null GROUP BY item.category

UCF parameter allows too many connections (155748)

The UCF parameter set policy=Throttle1,10,1 allows 11 connections, instead of 10
connections. When the client application registers the 11th connection with the server and not all
of the first 10 connections are registered yet, the server initially accepts the connection. However,
after the first 10 connections have arrived at the server, it rejects the 11th connection. During this
time interval, the client application assumes that it has 11 connections until the server rejects the
11th connection.

ACS configuration object not configured correctly

during installation (145419/DC-364)
The ACS configuration object is not correctly configured with a hostname and fully qualified domain
name (FQDN) during server installation. The ACS configuration object is getting populated with a
handle that is not fully qualified. This situation makes it likely that ACS URLs are not resolvable at
client endpoints. This results in client failures when attempting to access ACS content.
If you ever manually updated the hostname in the URL in the ACS configuration object, the update
replaced the fully qualified hostname with a hostname in the URL that is not fully qualified. To
resolve this problem, update the URL using Documentum Administrator to use a fully qualified
hostname. If this problem is not resolved, the following error can occur when you attempt to retrieve
content: All remote hosts failed.

Warning message when unable to register resource

agent, DMS, or index agent (149219/DC-470)
During Content Server installation, if the installation program cannot register the resource
agent, DMS, or index agent, the following warning message appears: Failure to register
Administration URL with the global registry. Please register the

Documentum Administrator.
Two possible causes for this message exist:
• The installation program could not connect to the global registry. It might not be running.
• The global registry is an older version than version 6 SP1. The installation program can only
automatically register resource agents, DMS, or index agents with version 6 SP1 or later version
repositories.
Use Documentum Administrator to register the Administration URL manually. No other actions
are required.

Repository upgrade from earlier versions to version 6

Upgrading a repository from version 5.2.x or earlier to version 6 is not supported. You first must
upgrade to version 5.3, then to version 6. This restriction also applies if your current version is
already a 5.3 upgrade, but from an initial implementation of version 5.2.x or earlier. Version 5.2.x
or earlier versions did not have the is_dynamic field in the dm_group type. The is_dynamic field
was added in later versions and has a value of 1 (true) or 0 (false). Versions 5.2.x. or earlier have a
NULL value instead of the is_dynamic values.
You can check whether this issue impacts the repository you plan to upgrade. Run the following
query in SQL or IDQL as a Superuser before you upgrade the repository:
select count(*) from dm_group_s where is_dynamic is null

If this query returns a nonzero value, the repository cannot upgrade properly.
• In SQL, run the following update:
update dm_group_s set is_dynamic=0 where is_dynamic is null

• Run the following IAPI command:

execsql,c,update dm_group_set is_dynamic=0 where is_dynamic is null

If you upgraded and your repository has this issue, correct the problem by doing the following:
• Run the following query to return any static groups that are members of a dynamic group:
select r_object_id, group_name from dm_group_s gs1 where
(gs1.is_dynamic=0 or gs1.is_dynamic is null) and exists
(select gs2.r_object_id from dm_group_s gs2, dm_group_r gr1
where gs2.is_dynamic=1 and gs2.group_name=gr1.i_supergroups_names
and gr1.r_object_id=gs1.r_object_id)

• If the query returns no rows, the following update statement can repair the repository:
update dm_group_r set i_nondyn_supergroups_names = i_supergroups_names
where i_supergroups_names is not null and r_object_id in
(select r_object_id from dm_group_s gs1 where
(gs1.is_dynamic = 0 or gs1.is_dynamic is null))

• If the query returns rows, correct the groups identified by the query individually with the help
from EMC Technical Support. For the groups you can directly update, run the following SQL
statement:
update dm_group_r set i_nondyn_supergroups_names = i_supergroups_names
where i_supergroups_names is not null and r_object_id in
(select r_object_id from dm_group_s gs1 where
(gs1.is_dynamic = 0 or gs1.is_dynamic is null)) and

dm_group_r gr1 where gs2.is_dynamic=1 and

Known Problems and Limitations

Importing and versioning documents on a Windows host causes

issues when checking them out on a Macintosh host (DC-3051)

Import and versioning documents in a Windows host, causes intermittent issues, for example
resource file corruption, while viewing, editing or checking out of these files on a Macintosh host

Limitations
This section describes limits on the usability of current functionality. The limitations can be part of
the product design or they can result from issues with associated third-party products.

Changing the installation owner account

Changing the installation owner account is not supported in Content Server, version 6.6. Although a
procedure outlining steps to perform such change was provided in earlier releases, many components
of the product have since changed, thus rendering this procedure incomplete. Consult with the EMC
Professional Services group if you are interested in implementing this functionality.

SvrMgr.exe program does not start on Window 2008

R–2 64 bit (CS-14287)
If you are trying to start the SvrMgr.exe program on a Windows 2008 64–bit platform that also has
an Oracle 64–bit database installed, the Svr.Mgr.exe program does not start because Content Server
is a 32–bit program. To resolve this issue, install a 32–bit Oracle client. You need 11g client version
11.1.0.7.0.

Installing with Oracle Real Application Clusters

(121442/CS-7816)
If you are installing Content Server with Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC), set the value of
the Oracle parameter MAX_COMMIT_PROPAGATION_DELAY to 0 (zero). This value is required
to ensure that the data that Content Server uses is consistent across all Oracle nodes. Values other
than zero are not supported.

Content Server does not allow multiple certificate

database stores to be loaded into Content Server
(CS-7248)
Due to the Netscape LDAP C SDK limitation, Content Server does not allow multiple certificate
database stores to be loaded into Content Server, if multiple certificate database stores are loaded
into Content Server, only the primary ldap config object works.
To work around this limitation, store all LDAP server certificates in one common certificate store or
database.

Repository creation not supported on UltraSPARC IIe

processors (138837)
Content Server does not support creation of repositories on Sun Microsystems hosts based on
UltraSPARC IIe processors.

Granting write permission to dm_world (DA-3769)

Full-text indexing PDF annotations

Annotations to PDF documents made using PDF annotation services are not enabled automatically
for full-text indexing. To enable full-text indexing for annotations using PDF annotation services,
do the following:

1. Log on to Content Server and use API commands through Documentum Administrator or IAPI.
2. Type the following commands:
retrieve,c,dm_format where dos_extension=’xfdf’
set,c,1,can_index
T
set,c,1,mime_type

Cannot upgrade separately database version and

Content Server version for certain database platforms
When upgrading Content Server to version 6, you may also be upgrading to a new version of the
relational database management system (RDBMS). For example, as part of upgrading from Content
Server 5.3 SP4, you may upgrade the database from Oracle 9i to Oracle 10g.
Usually, you have the option to upgrade the database version at a different time than Content Server,
returning the system to production in the interim. However, there are a few database platforms
for which this option is not available due to a lack of common supported platforms between the
releases. For example, Content Server 5.3 is certified with Sybase version 12.5 on Solaris, while
Content Server 6 is certified with Sybase version 15. There is no database version that is supported
with both Content Server versions.
The affected platforms are:

When upgrading from Content Server 5.3 to Content Server 6, you do not have the option of
upgrading these database versions separately from Content Server. Upgrade both components at
the same time, without returning to production in the interim.
Note: Content Server, version 5.3 SP4 and later does support SQL Server 2005 in addition to SQL
Server 2000. If you are running Content Server 5.3 SP4 or later, you have the option to upgrade to
SQL Server 2005 separately from the Content Server upgrade.

Client applications accessing Content Server located in

a different time zone
Before Content Server version 6, client applications were unaware of time zones. All date fields
set from a client application were assumed to be relative to the Content Server time zone. When
queried or fetched, those dates were sent back to the client application unconverted and would look
essentially the same.
For example: A date field set to the value 1/1/2009 8:00 a.m. EST on a client application in New York
would be stored as 1/1/2009 8:00 a.m. PST on a Content Server in San Francisco. The date field would
appear as 1/1/2009 8:00 a.m. to a client application in all other time zones, such as London, as well.
New Content Server version 6 client applications are automatically aware of time zones when
connected to a version 6 repository. The Content Server receives the date fields in universal time
coordinated (UTC) format. When queried or fetched, the system converts the date fields to the
local time.
For example: A date field set to the value 1/1/2009 8:00 a.m. EST on a client application in New York
is stored as 1/1/2009 5:00 a.m. PST on a Content Server in San Francisco. The date field appears as
1/1/2009 1:00 p.m. GMT to a client application in London.
In an upgraded environment where the client application and Content Server reside in different time
zones, dates that stored by a 5.x client application and stored before the upgrade and then fetched by
a 6.0 client application display using the new time-zone aware date semantic.

68 EMC Documentum Content Server Enterprise Edition Release Notes, Version 6.6
Known Problems and Limitations

For example: A date field set to the value 1/1/2009 8:00 a.m. EST on a version 5.x client application
in New York is stored as 1/1/2009 8:00 a.m. PST on a version 5.x Content Server in San Francisco
and would appear as 1/1/2009 8:00 a.m. EST when fetched by the version 5.x client application in
New York.
After an upgrade, the same date field, when fetched by a version 6 client application in New York,
appears as 11:00 a.m. EST and as 4:00 p.m. GMT by a version 6 client application in London.
The following table summarizes the date semantics.

Table 15. Date semantics

6.0 to fetch
Fetched: 1/1/2009
11:00 a.m. EST

Note: If client applications running on application servers are on different time zones than the
Content Server to which they are connected, these client applications must be at the same version, for
example, all on 5.3.x or all on 6. A mixed environment is not supported. The following paragraphs
explain what happens when you have a mixed environment.
Depending on the version of the client applications, different date semantics are used. Version
5.x client applications continue to use old version 5.x date semantics, even when connected to a
version 6 repository. Version 6 client applications use the new date semantics when connected to a
version 6 repository. Version 6 client applications connected to a version 5.x repository use the old
version 5.x date semantics.
Version 5.x client applications that fetch dates set by a version 6 client application always see that
date relative to the Content Server’s time zone. Version 6 client applications that fetch dates set by a
version 5.x client application always see that date adjusted forward or backward, depending on the
difference in locales between the client application and Content Server.
For example:
• A date field set to the value 1/1/2009 8:00 a.m. of a version 5.x client application in New York
would be stored as 1/1/2009 8:00 a.m. on a version 6 Content Server in San Francisco and would
appear as 1/1/2009 11:00 a.m. when fetched by a version 6 client application in New York.
• A date field set to the value 1/1/2009 8:00 a.m. on a version 6 client application in New York would
be stored as 1/1/2009 5:00 a.m. on a version 6 Content Server in San Francisco and would appear
as 1/1/2009 5:00 a.m. when fetched by a version 5.x client application in New York.
Note: In environments where the client application and Content Server reside in the same time zone,
the semantics between version 5.x and 6 appear to be the same.

Known Problems and Limitations

LEFT OUTER JOIN statement

• If any repeating attribute appears in the ON clause, a ROW_BASED hint must be used.
• If any repeating attributes are used in a select list or ON clause, only matching rows are returned.
The server adds the dm_repeating1_1.r_object_id=<type_name_1>.r_object_id predicate in the
WHERE clause which translates LEFT OUTER JOIN to an INNER JOIN.
• If there are aspect attributes in the select list, no type join can be performed, including LEFT
OUTER JOIN.

High-Volume Server limitations

• The spaceoptimize attribute property applies to all data types for Oracle, but only ID and String
data types for other databases.
• DB2 does not support TINYINT.
• DB2, SQL Server and Sybase only save space for NULL on VARCHAR.
• Data partitioning enhancements are only supported on Oracle and SQL Server.
• Type and registered table can not be removed from dm_partition_scheme.

Java Method Server high-availability

• Default Java Method Server for remote Content Serves (RCS) do not participate in JMS failover.
• A JMS node must be bound to a Content Server host and cannot be installed on a stand-alone
independent machine.
• JMS load balancing is not supported. A single Content Server cannot be explicitly associated to
multiple Java method servers.

Graceful shutdown of workflow agent

Documentum Administrator version 6.6 supports graceful shutdown of a workflow agent. The
workflow agent controls the execution of automatic activities in a workflow. The new system
shutdown timeout property on the Server Configuration page sets the time that the workflow agent
attempts to shut down work items gracefully after receiving a shutdown command.
User can modify system shutdown timeout on the Server Configuration Properties page. To access
the page, log into a repository and navigate to Administration > Basic Configuration > Content
Servers, select a server configuration object in the Name column, then select View > Properties > Info.
The system shutdown timeout property on the server configuration object sets the time that the
workflow agent attempts to shut down work items gracefully after receiving a shutdown command.
This feature is only applicable for repositories that use multiple Content Servers.
If the shutdown timeout period is exceeded (or is set to zero), the workflow agent shuts down
immediately. When the workflow agent does not shut down gracefully, automated tasks in certain
states can be corrupted. If tasks are corrupted, restarting the Content Server does not result in

EMC Documentum Content Server Enterprise Edition Release Notes, Version 6.6 73
Technical Notes

resumption of the managed workflows. The server log file indicates when a graceful shutdown did
not occur. Use the RECOVER_AUTO_TASKS administration method to recover the automated tasks.

Date storage changes for time zone support (CS-15114)

In new repositories, all date values are stored as UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) format.
Repositories upgraded from prior releases continue to store date values in server local time.
The exception to this occurs when inserting date and time values into the database by using a
registered table. Data inserted into a registered table is saved as a literal value and no UTC conversion
is done. Therefore you need to do the UTC conversion manually after inserting the values. For
example, when using EST do not insert a time of 17:30:00 EST, rather insert 12:30:00 because this is
the correct UTC (since EST is GMT-5 hours).

SSO protection and authentication for ACS and

BOCS does not include protection through Kerberos
implementation
Single sign-on (SSO) protection and authentication has been extended to Accelerated Content
Server (ACS) and Branch Office Caching Services (BOCS). However, when the SSO protection and
authentication is done through a Kerberos implementation, ACS and BOCS are not protected.

Change for date arithmetic functions and date keywords

In 6.5 SP3, there is a change for date arithmetic functions DATEFLOOR() and DATETOSTRING()
and date keywords TODAY,TOMORROW and YESTERDAY. This change has been made to have
consistent behavior across all date functions and date keywords by processing them on UTC
values. Following is a brief definition of how these functions and keywords behave now. For more
information, contact EMC Technical Support who will refer you to a support note describing this
change in more detail.
• The DATEFLOOR () function rounds a date down to the beginning of an indicated granularity
(day, month, or year) in UTC. The client converts the resulted date to client local time before
displaying the value.
• The DATETOSTRING () function formats a date value to a character string in UTC and returns the
resulting character string to the client. The client displays the character string as it is in UTC ,
resulting in a character string, not a date. End users always get the result for DATETOSTRING ()
as a UTC value.
• NOW returns the current date and time based on the server’s time zone.
• TODAY returns the current date based on the server’s time zone. The time defaults to 00:00:00.

74 EMC Documentum Content Server Enterprise Edition Release Notes, Version 6.6
Technical Notes

• YESTERDAY returns the current date based on the server’s time zone minus one day. The time
defaults to 00:00:00.
• TOMORROW returns the current date based on the server’s time zone plus one day. The time
defaults to 00:00:00.

Example 6-1. Time zone examples

For TODAY, YESTERDAY, and TOMORROW keywords, when these keywords are use in DQL: If
server and client are in different timezones, then user will see the offset in the time value (difference
of server and client offset values).
• If the server and client are in the same time zone, users will see the time as 00:00:00
• If the server and client are in different time zones, users will see the offset in the time value
(difference of server and client offset values).
For example, if the server is in PST and the client is in IST, users will see 13:30 in the time value.

LDAP synchronization (CS-14935)

While running LDAP synchronization jobs to synchronize users from the LDAP server, it is
mandatory to have at least read access to the following attributes in the directory server:
• nsuniqueid - Sun Directory processor
• objectguid - Actve Directory
• ibm-entryuuid - IBM
• guid - Novell
• orclguid - Oracle
In addition, all attributes that have been mapped in the ldap config object must also have read
access in the directory server.

Configuring repository in 64-bit operating system with

SQL Server 2008
To configure a repository in 64-bit OS with SQL Server 2008, do the following:
If you are using SQL Server 2008 (64-bit) on a 64-bit Windows OS, perform the following steps:

1. Install SqlCmdLnUtils.msi.
To obtain the SQLCMD utility for 32-bit application, go to: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/
details.aspx?FamilyId=C6C3E9EF-BA29-4A43-8D69-A2BED18FE73C&displaylang=en.
2. Set up DSN for 32-bit application by using %WINDIR%\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe.
3. Install the appropriate patch based on your SQL Server 2008 installation (32-bit, 64-bit, ia64). If
you use 32-bit SQL 2008, apply the 32-bit patch; if you use the 64-bit SQL Server 2008, apply the

64-bit patch. Be sure to apply the correct patch for KB956717, which is located at the Microsoft
Knowledge Base.

New environment variable improves performance for

users without superuser privileges
Session users without superuser privileges who belong to a large number of groups experience
performance problems. A new environment variable, DM_LEFT_OUTER_JOIN_FOR_ACL, improves
performance levels for these users. When you set this variable, it composes a LEFT OUTER JOIN from
the dm_sysobject_s table to the dm_acl_s table on the FROM clause of the converted SQL statement.
The LEFT OUTER JOIN returns all entries from the left table even though an entry does not have a
matching entry on the right table. It uses the left table as a driving table to find the corresponding
entries on the right table. This guides the database optimizer to a better execution plan, which
improves performance on a Microsoft SQL Server.

Change in the way Content Server processes DQL hints

for RETURN_TOP
DQL is an object-based query language. To return top rows or objects, DQL must know what
RETURN_TOP means. Databases are not aware of Documentum objects. For example, a query to
return top 11 rows does not always equal 11 objects. If a DQL query contains repeating attributes,
each database row returned does not translate into a separate Documentum object. If RETURN_TOP
11 means top 11 objects, the results must be limited at the Content Server level. If RETURN_TOP 11
mean top 11 rows, the results must be limited at the database level (for more efficiency). A query
containing only single valued attributes behave the same for object- or row-based results. To enable
this functionality, a new parameter return_top_results_row_based is introduced in the server.ini file
and this parameter controls where the return_top results are restricted.
This parameter value is set to TRUE by default, so the results are restricted on the database level. This
is done so that Content Server returns results for return top like a row-based query where objects
can be incomplete. When the value is set to FALSE, Content Server restricts the results, and returns
complete objects to the application.
The semantics of RETURN_TOP (row or object) for different versions of Content Server is as follows:

Oracle MSSQL Sybase DB2

Content Server 5.3 Object Row Row Row
Content Server 6.5 Row Row Row Row
6.5 SP2–return_top_results_row_ Row Row Row Row
based=T or default
6.5 SP2–return_top_results_row_ Object Object Object Object
based=F

Assigning a default file extension format for

importing archive messages with attachments in
dm_format.format_class (COMPAR-346)
When ingesting or importing archive messages with external attachments, the file extension (for
example, .txt) determines the content format type for external attachments. If multiple formats are
defined for a file extension, assign a default format by setting the dm_format.format_class to message
archive default as follows:
UPDATE dm_format OBJECTS
SET format_class=’message archive default’
WHERE dos_extension=’<extension>’ AND name=’<format>’

Example of setting crtext as the default format for .txt files:

Update dm_format objects
set format_class=’message archive default’
where dos_extension=’txt’ and name=’crtext’

Example of removing crtext as the default format for .txt files:

Update dm_format objects
remove format_class[0]
where dos_extension=’txt’ and name=’crtext’

Keystores
In general, copying a keystore from one host to another does not work by design. You cannot copy,
swap, or share keystores. They are sensitive security information.
If the client is not running on the Content Server host, you can change the keystore: Stop the client,
delete the keystore, and restart the client. On restart, the client creates a keystore, but all privileges
associated with the deleted keystore are lost.

ACS and BOCS in reverse proxy configurations

In a configuration that includes a reverse proxy server, ACS behind a reverse proxy server is
supported.
In a configuration that includes a reverse proxy server, BOCS behind a reverse proxy server is
supported only in pull mode. If the DMS is behind a reverse proxy and the URL for the DMS is
specified using the reverse proxy, BOCS must be able to communicate with the DMS through the
reverse proxy. However, if the network is configured to where a server cannot send requests to a host
outside the internal network, this causes issues.

requirements (128518)
For a Content Server installation, the index agent and the application server require 1.5 GB memory.
Index agent requires 1 GB and the application server requires 512 MB.

Accessing JMX agents from JConsole

You can access JMX agents from JConsole, but the URL format is different from the URL format

in the index agent log
The login_ticket_cutoff attribute of the dm_docbase_config object can cause an index agent to
produce user authentication failure message in the index agent log. This problem occurs when the

EMC Documentum Content Server Enterprise Edition Release Notes, Version 6.6 79
Technical Notes

dm_fulltext_index_user login ticket passed to the index agent was created before the value specified
in the login_ticket_cutoff. This situation happens when the index agent is started before the data
value in the login_ticket_cutoff attribute.
This behavior is expected of the login_ticket_cutoff attribute. However, it causes the index agent
to stop indexing objects because it cannot proceed with user authentication error messages being
logged. To work around this issue, restart the index agent through the FTINDEX_AGENT_ADMIN
apply method. This procedure establishes a new login ticket to pass to the index agent that does not
conflict with the value set in the login_ticket_cutoff attribute.

Using data partitioning

During installation of Content Server, you are presented with the option to enable data partitioning.
If you select this option, the repository that you create is partitioned, but only one partition exists. To
take advantage of data partitioning and create multiple partitions, you must have a High-Volume
Server license.

Setting Documentum environment variables

Before you install Content Server on a UNIX or Linux host, set environment variables that identify the
directories into which Content Server will be installed. The variables must be set in the installation
owner’s environment.
You can create the Content Server installation directories before installing the server, or you can allow
the Content Server installation program to create the directories. If you allow the Content Server
installation program to create the directories, ensure that the directory names you provide during the
installation program match the names specified in the environment variables.
Do not use symbolic links (symlinks) for the installation directories, or use them in any environment
variables used by Content Server, as they are not supported. This restriction also applies to
environment variables used to specify the database location. For example, if you use Oracle, the
ORACLE_HOME environment variable cannot use a symbolic link.

New bundled Java Runtime Environment (JRE) versions

For version 6.5 SP3, Content Server and UCF are bundled with new JRE versions as follows:
• Content Server on Windows, Linux, and Solaris platforms is bundled with JRE version 1.5.0_21.
• UCF is bundled with JRE version 1.6.0_16.

Obtaining DFC tracing comparable to prior DMCL

tracing
To obtain tracing information that is comparable to the information provided when tracing was set at
level ten through the dmcl.ini file in previous releases, use the following settings in the dfc.properties
file:
dfc.tracing.enable=true
dfc.tracing.verbose=true
dfc.tracing.max_stack_depth=0
dfc.tracing.include_rpcs=true
dfc.tracing.mode=compact

DFC trace settings in dfc.properties

By default, the dfc.tracing.file_creation_mode value is set to standard, which generates one tracing file.
However, if multiple processes, each with its own DFC instance, are sharing the tracing directory,
multiple trace files are generated.

DMS installations
If you have DMS installed, the installation directory contains the DmsClient directory, which installs
a DmsClient DocApp. The DmsClient DocApp is installed only on the global registry and is used
for communications from DFC on the application server to DMS.

Permissions required to specify group as object owner

are changed
Beginning with version 6, a user, a superuser, or a user with Change Owner permission can change
the owner of an object to another individual user or to a group.
This is a change in the requirements for specifying a group name as the object owner. In releases
before version 6, the following statement was true:
To identify a group as the owner of an object, you must be a superuser or you must own the object
and be a member of the group to which you are assigning ownership.
Beginning with version 6, membership in the specified group is no longer required.

Preparing a DB2 database for Content Server

installation on Microsoft Windows
When installing Content Server on a Microsoft Windows platform running a DB2 database, additional
configurations of the DB2 database are required. The following sections provide guidelines for
preparing a DB2 database for Content Server installation on Microsoft Windows:
• DB2 requirementsDB2 requirements, page 82
• Preparing for database creation Preparing for DB2 database creation, page 82
• Creating a DB2 database for use by Content Server Creating a DB2 database for use by Content
Server, page 83
• Configuring a DB2 database Configuring a DB2 database, page 83
• Tuning DB2 database performance Tuning a DB2 database, page 86

DB2 requirements

To support audit trail functionality, DB2 requires 8K page capability. During the installation of
version 6.5, the installation program automatically creates 8K pages. To determine whether you have
8K temporary tablespace before an installation or upgrade, run the following command:
db2 LIST TABLESPACES SHOW DETAIL

If the page size parameter is 4096, you have 4K page size. If the page size parameter is 8192, you
have 8K page size.
db2 CREATE TEMPORARY TABLESPACE TEMPSPACE2 PAGESIZE = 8192

You can create the database and set the parameters from the DB2 command line or from the Control
Center. Use the Control Center to run the performance wizard. You can run the Control Center
on AIX, or you can run performance wizard from a Windows system to tune performance for the
instance on AIX.

Preparing for DB2 database creation

Use the following guidelines to prepare for the creation of a DB2 database.
• Before you create a database for use by Content Server, unset the DB2CODEPAGE environment
variable from the command line: db2set DB2CODEPAGE =
• If you install DB2 on the same host as the Content Server, the clients are installed automatically.
• If you install DB2 on a different host from the Content Server, manually install the DB2 clients
on the Content Server host.

82 EMC Documentum Content Server Enterprise Edition Release Notes, Version 6.6
Technical Notes

Creating a DB2 database for use by Content Server

• Start the Control Center.

• Provide a name for the database.
• Provide an alias for the database and note the alias name. The alias name must be available
during repository creation.
• Use database-managed space in the three system tablespaces
(SYSCATSPACE, TEMPSPACE1, and USERSPACE1).
• Set the size of TEMPSPACE1 to a minimum of 400 megabytes.
• Set the size of USERSPACE1 and SYSCATSPACE to a minimum of 200 megabytes.
• Set the code page to UTF-8.
• After you create the database, start the DB2 command line.
• From the command line, set the DB2CODEPAGE environment variable to 1208:
db2set DB2CODEPAGE=1208
• Set the DB2_RR_TO_RS environment variable:
db2set DB2_RR_TO_RS=YES. This prevents deadlocks and live locks.
• Set the DB2NTNOCACHE environment variable:
db2set DB2NTNOCACHE=1
• If you are installing DB2 7, set the DB2_INDEX_2BYTEVARLEN environment variable:
db2set DB2_INDEX_2BYTEVARLEN=ON. This is not required on DB2 8, where new indexes are
type 2 indexes by default.

Upgrade notes
This section contains information about upgrading Content Server.

Upgrading ContentServer to 6.5 SPx (CS-14720)

If Content Server supports multiple repositories, ensure that you upgrade all repositories to 6.5 SPx.
You cannot have multiple repositories of different versions on the same Windows host since different
method server binaries are used for different versions. If you retain a repository at a 5.3 SPx version,
the 5.3 SPx repository will use the latest 6.5 SPx method server program to launch JMS based on the
registry entries on the Windows host. This version incompatibility of the repository and method
server program causes an access violation and prevents the repository from starting up.

dmcl.ini settings (CS-14589)

The settings from dmcl.ini from your current configuration are transferred after an upgrade. This
might cause an issue if the dmcl.ini property dfc.max.session_count is set to a low session count.
EMC recommends that you remove this property setting from the dmcl.ini file before performing
the upgrade.

Upgrading from version 5.3 SPX to 6.6

After upgrading Content Server from version 5.3 to 6.5, restart Content Server.

Localization notes
This section contains information about localizing Content Server

Remotely populating the data dictionary of Content

Server
To populate the Content Server data dictionary remotely with data dictionaries in languages other
than the language of the operating system hosting Content Server, set up the classpath to support
this feature. For example, if Content Server is running on a Japanese operating system, populate a
Chinese data dictionary from a Chinese operating system, the Korean data dictionary from a Korean
operating system, and so on. Use the following procedure to set up the classpath, which assumes that
you want to populate a Chinese data dictionary on a Japanese Content Server.

To set up the classpath:

1. Install DFC 6 in a remote Chinese operating system and verify that the following entries in
the classpath are set:
a. The location of dctm.jar. On Windows, dctm.jar is typically in C:\Program
Files\Documentum\Shared. Using this example, add C:\Program
Files\Documentum\Shared\dctm.jar to the classpath.
b. The location of dfc.properties. On Windows, dfc.properties is typically in
C:\Documentum\Config. Using this example, add C:\Documentum\Config\dfc.properties
to the classpath.
2. On the Japanese Content Server, share the folder containing dmbasic.exe to the location where
you want to populate the data dictionary, for example, C:\Documentum\product\6.0\bin
3. On the remote (Chinese) operating system, type the following:
IP Address of Japanese operating system\bin\dmbasic -f \\
IP Address of Japanese operating system \bin\dd_populate.ebs
-e LoadDataDictionary Content Server Name Username password\\
IP Address of Japanese operating system\bin\data_dictionary_zh.txt

OPTIMIZEFETCH Performance Considerations; ALTER

ASPECT DQL Command (CS-16136)
When aspects were first introduced, it was assumed that better performance in fetching qualifiable
aspect properties would result by using OPTIMIZEFETCH when adding properties to an aspect.
OPTIMIZEFETCH was set to be the default for the ALTER ASPECT DQL command. However, as we
accumulated more experience, it became clear that NO OPTIMIZEFETCH gives better performance.
In the next release, 6.7, the default will be changed from OPTIMIZEFETCH to NO OPTIMIZEFETCH
for the ALTER ASPECT DQL command. We recommend that you use the NO OPTIMIZEFETCH
option explicitly, in release 6.6, when using the ALTER ASPECT command.

Support of Solaris zones in release 6.5 SP2

Solaris zones are supported in release 6.5 SP2, with the exception that nonglobal zones are not being
supported on the index server.

Incorrect description of dm_read_all group (CS–13122)

The Content Server 6.5 SP2 Release Notes and What’s New documents contain an incorrect
description of the new group dm_read_all introduced in 6.5 SP2 that gives the users read permissions,
and members of this out—of—the—box group can read any object in the repository regardless of the
ACL. The following statement in this section is incorrect:
For example, if a user is a member of the dm_read_all group, then the user is allowed to construct
and update any object in the repository even if the user does not have any permission in the
associated ACL.

Incorrect procedure on upgrading the system for high

availability in the Content Server Full-text Installation
and Administration Guide (CS-11687)
The EMC Documentum Content Server Fulltext Indexing System Installation and Administration Guide,
version 6.5, page 58-59, states the incorrect file name in Steps 4 through 8. The procedure refers to
the script file named create_fulltext_objects_ha.ebs, but the syntax shows create_fulltext_objects.ebs
instead.
However, both the scripts contain these methods and hence it can be either create_fulltext_objects.ebs
or create_fulltext_objects_ha.ebs.

Upgrade from 6.0 SP1 to 6.5 SP2 fails for Sybase

database due to recommended number of locks
(CS-11611)
The EMC Documentum Content Server Installation Guide, version 6.5, recommends a value of 25000 for
the number of locks. This number is not adequate for version 6.5 and later and must be increased to
35000.

Ports to use for the index agent (CS-9015)

The EMC Documentum Content Server Fulltext Indexing System Installation and Administration Guide,
version 6.5, page 41, has incorrect port numbers for other index agents. The correct default ports
for the first index agent on a host are:
• 9200 for version 6.5 and later
• 9080 for versions before 6.5
The defaults for other index agents are 9220 for index agent 2, 9240 for index agent 3, and so on.

dm_fix_folders.ebs script documentation missing from

Content Server Administrator Guide (CS-5409)
This section provides a description of the dm_fix_folders.ebs script.
This script checks each folder in the repository and, optionally folders within a certain path, for
corruption in the r_folder_path or i_ancestor_id fields. The script performs the following checks:
• That r_folder_path values reflect the r_folder_paths of the parents
• That i_ancestor_id values correctly reflect the IDs of the parents.

96 EMC Documentum Content Server Enterprise Edition Release Notes, Version 6.6
Documentation

• Looks for and removes self-linked folders and attaches the orphaned folders to the /Temp cabinet
• Issues warnings about folder paths that exceed the field width
Folders are fixed by recalculating r_folder_path and i_ancestor_id values from the parent folders.
For each folder, the script calculates what the r_folder_path and i_ancestor_id values should be and
compares them against the current copies in the repository. If there are discrepancies, the folder
is rebuilt (unless the script runs in report mode only). Because fixing a folder depends on the
correctness of its parents, the script runs several passes through the repository. Each pass fixes
only folders whose parents have already been fixed. For example, the first pass fixes only cabinets,
subsequent passes fix subfolders, and so on
The script uses a temporary table called "dm_fix_fold_tab" to keep track of folders that are being
fixed during the execution of the script. Because of this, you cannot run the script concurrently, not
even against separate folder paths.
For performance reasons, folders are held in the cache while being used, and they are not re-fetched
each time they are accessed. Therefore, if folders are being changed by users while this script is
running, version mismatch errors can occur.

Running the script

You can run this script in different modes:

• To run the script over the entire repository, issue this command:
dmbasic -f dm_fix_folders.ebs -e EntryFix -- \
<repositoryname> <[user_login_domain\]user_login_name>
<password> <trace_level>
• To run the script under one folder, issue this command:
dmbasic -f dm_fix_folders.ebs -e EntryFixWithFolder -- \
<repositoryname> <[user_login_domain\]user_login_name>
<password> <trace_level>
• To report corrupted folders in the entire repository but not fix the corrupted folders, issue this
command:
dmbasic -f dm_fix_folders.ebs -e EntryReport -- \
<repositoryname> <[user_login_domain\]user_login_name>
<password> <trace_level>
• To report corrupted folders under one folder but not fix the corrupted folders, issue this command:
dmbasic -f dm_fix_folders.ebs -e EntryReportWithFolder -- \
<repositoryname> <[user_login_domain\]user_login_name>
<password> <trace_level> ,folder_id>

Note: The following restriction applies to using the WithFolder option to the fix or report modes:
The WithFolder option relies on the i_ancestor_id field to determine which items are underneath the
specified folder. If a corrupted folder exists under the requested path but is corrupted in such a way
that it does not contain the i_ancestor_id, running the script will not fix the folder.
You can fix the folder by running the script with its specific folder ID. Examine the orphaned folders
(reattached to /Temp by this script) and, if required, save or remove them.
Note: The script cannot fix the r_folder_path truncations; it can only report them. Any folder paths
over the limit are truncated by the server.

To resolve this issue, shorten the folder names and rerun the script until you no longer see any
warnings.

Useful trace levels

You might find the following trace levels useful:

• 0 — Reports corrupt folders and provides occasional progress reports.
• 1 — Reports each folder as it is evaluated.
• 9 — Reports much detail and provides object dumps before and after fixing corrupted folders.
• 10 — Reports very much detail; use for debugging only.
