Prompt: Why D&D is beneficial and not antithetical to Christian beliefs (Cons?

Pros: Teamwork and creativity+ problem solving, Strategy + Critical thinking, less violence

Cons: Time + Money

1st draft:

The game Dungeons and Dragons (AKA D&D) is a very popular tabletop game, perhaps the most
popular of the tabletop role-playing game (RPG) genre. It is a game beloved by many and demonized by
some dogmatic Christians. The game has many benefits, a few minor drawbacks, but is no way related to
the occult or actual demons.

The benefits of tabletop RPG games like D&D are numerous. Players build teamwork and
creativity, often learning how to help each other in difficult situations or brainstorm a unique solution to
a puzzle or challenge. Often the challenges are not simply enemies to defeat, but a mystery to solve, a
puzzle to complete, or other situations that require critical thinking.

In fact, the GM/DM (Game Master or Dungeon Master, the two terms are interchangeable), or the
person running the game, usually must make up the setting when not playing a premade storyline.

Even the combat in D&D is complex with creative tactics and strategies often turning the tide of
a battle. The violence in D&D combat can be much less than in video games, with the only necessary
indication of damage being done or an enemy being defeated being the GM/DM stating that the enemy
takes a certain amount of damage to its hit points (HP), or being defeated. The GM/DM can describe an
enemy’s death simply, such as “The goblin is defeated,” or in graphic detail such as “The goblin explodes
into bloody red chunks.”

There are two main drawbacks to tabletop RPG games, however. The most important one is
time. Games like D&D are fun, but they can take up lots of time, with sessions lasting anywhere from
four to nine hours.

Money is another factor, however. The handbooks and specialized dice also require a significant
amount of money as well. Money is usually a greater factor in miniature wargaming games like
Warhammer 40,000, however.

One of the biggest controversies surrounding D&D is that some worry about its inclusion of
magic and demons, its supposed connection to the occult. These claims and fears, however, are
unfounded. Casting magic in D&D during the game is as simple as telling the GM/DM “I want to cast
fireball on the goblin” Demons and witches only account for a small portion of the hostile creatures in
the game, and when demons appear in-game, they are invariably evil. As stated earlier, the game
contains no rituals, and does not promote the occult.

Overall, tabletop RPG games, although not perfect, provide a morally acceptable, fun, and
intellectually stimulating experience.
