Power of A Photograph

A photographer can tell powerful stories through their photos by finding scenes or objects that allow for many interpretations and inferences. Effective storytelling photos follow simple rules - the photographer finds inspiration from their surroundings and captures unexpected moments that evoke emotion in viewers. Three example photos are described that each leave room for endless stories: one of a distraught woman, one of a damaged building, and one of a crying woman. A good photographer creates photos that can have many possible stories and interpretations thought up by creative viewers.

How a photographer can tell stories 1

Power of a Photograph

The power of a photograph lies within the photographer. A photographer that has a story

to tell finds a way to display that through his/her photograph. When it comes to telling a story

with photography, a photographer must find an object or scene that has endless opportunities to

tell a story. A photographer must follow simple rules and try to find inspiration from around them

to create a powerful story.

There are multiple ways to create a story, the powerful stories follow simple rules, in my

opinion. I believe a photographer creates a powerful and meaningful story by finding inspiration

from around them. Instead of creating inspiration a good photographer uses their emotions and

meanings to find the unexpected. Most viewers do not want to see the same old photographer

over and over again. A good photographer finds the unexpected and thinks outside the box. When

a photographer exabits emotion within a photograph and allows the viewers to feel similar or any

emotion, it allows a story to begin. Take these photographs for example.

`Each of these photographs allow an endless number of stories to drift throughout heads.

The first photograph (far left) is of a young woman who seems to be distraught. For me

personally, I can think of several stories of why this is happening. From how she is dressed I can

infer that she is young. The photographer created this shot with the opportunity to have endless

number of stories for the viewers. The creativity within it, not knowing her facial expression, not

having context clues, and having it in black and white creates a powerful message for the

audience.

The second picture (middle) is a different way of creating and telling a story. The unique

aspect of this photograph is that it is of a landscape, it cannot show emotions. However, this

photograph can cause a viewer to have certain reactions and emotions to the dramatic frame that

the photographer chose to use. Centering the shot on this specific object (the still intake

doorframe) allows the audience to wonder what happened to the rest of the building. This photo

creates an endless number of stories that a viewer can infer or become creative with.

The last photo (far right) shows an emotion of a woman. Although we cannot see the

woman’s face, we can infer that she is upset and crying by the placement of her hands and lack

of eye contact with the camera. The stories that lie with this photograph is the why. This

meaning, why is this person upset, where is she, what happened, is she crying? The photograph

leads to numerous possibilities with the viewers reaction to the story.

In conclusion, a photographs power lies within the photographer. A good story leads to

numerous possibilities and stories. The viewer also holds the responsibility with the story due to

their creativity. The power of creating a story for a viewer lies within angles, people, objects, and

color. Any person can create a photograph that tells a story. A good photographer creates a

photograph that can have an endless number of stories that lead in multiple directions.
